Toothsome Overhyped

We haven’t had a bad meal there in many trips but I don’t doubt it’s hit or miss. We’ve only eaten there at lunch so maybe not quite as busy and maybe less likely to get overwhelmed? 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's what I always tell people on Facebook. Seems like most negative reviews also mention large crowds and waits. Definitely a correlation.

When I went there the service was okay and the food made us sick. So no won't go back there. Stick with the desserts and the chocolate shop.

Toothsome - I like the bar and appetizers - but its nothing spectacular - the shakes look great but way overrated IMO

The bartenders are very good - assuming its the same folks - I know Jake was still there last time I went

As for Cowfish - yeah its gone way down hill since it first open - last time there cleanliness was very questionable - that was pre shutdowns

We had a really terrible meal there and will never eat there again. The milkshakes weren’t even good. They were runny and the toppings we literally unthawed Costco quality cake and brownies.

I suppose it's a personal choice. I really enjoyed Toothsome and thought Cowfish was severely overhyped.
We had this same experience! We went to both 3 years ago, and our meal at Cowfish was amazing while Toothsome was just "meh." We went again last month, and kids really wanted Toothsome. The meal was amazing - I had the tuna salad, kids had chicken sandwiches, and hubby had the filet. The amount of tuna on my salad was HUGE and it was delicious. It was one of the best things that I have had in a very long time. We all loved our food. The only thing that wasn't great was the bread pudding. The service was top notch, we had a table on the patio and the weather was perfect.

The Cowfish this time was okay - but the service was awful, the restaurant was loud due to a bachelorette party, and it was freezing in there. Our entrees did not come out at the same time and we had to ask for everything - silverware, appetizer plates, drink refills, etc. We sat around with dirty plates for quite awhile before we got out check. By the time it was over, we could not wait to get out of there.

The food is Applebee's quality and is only a necessary evil to get you to the desserts, which are over top and only ok, but the really problem is the creepy, stalker steampunk robot who harasses you at your table. They should offer Angel shots at the bar in order to get you away from him.

We've been to Toothsome twice. I love the atmosphere and the ambiance, and strangely, even the craziness/business seems to add to the ambiance rather than detract from it. The food, however, is very hit-or-miss. This last time we were there, the food was decent, but our waiter was SLOW. And the desserts are big, bold, and stunning to look at, but the quality of the desserts, especially the ice cream, is very low.

Having said that, of the 2 restaurants we hit at CityWalk last October, Toothsome was by FAR the better of the two. Bigfire was a complete bust. My steak was SEVERELY overcooked, so then when I complained, they brought out a new one that was literally raw in the middle - it was so bad, it was almost like the cook was trying to get back at me for complaining. And, the "fireside s'mores" were way overpriced for a tiny little dessert.

We also changed opinions on cowfish from a 3 times a trip place to 0-1 times. Definitely changed from a few years ago. I hyped this place when we first went maybe 4 years ago. Now it’s just not a huge to-do. Prices have risen , portions dropped and they cheaped out on certain things like using a Parmesan sauce instead of the real stuff.
That's really sad because this is the place that I've been meaning to go to for years, just never happened for one reason or another. It was "number 1" on my current CityWalk list - at least until I read you post...

We had a similar experience as most of you.

We ate there twice are last time at UO in Dec. 2017.

Ambience is excellent. Service was excellent both times. Food was excellent the first time. Food was mediocre the second time.

We have always really enjoyed the food at the Hard Rock Cafe. I know it gets mixed reviews, but we have had nothing but good experiences there.
We have also had good experiences at NBC Sports Grill. Surprisingly good food and excellent service.

We've eaten at Toothsome many times. The burgers & sandwich options end up not so good. My go-to is the Sole / Flounder Amandine (sometimes they are heavy with the butter, so "light butter" is a suggestion for those that aren't sure about a lot of butter). My Dad orders the crepes or French toast options regularly and those are always good. Although we joke about eating dessert followed by dessert. My Dad and a friend of ours really like the Chocolate X 5 milkshake, but I've never found one that I really like, so I tend to order one of the sundaes. They're usually a little cheaper too. I think it's a very much "what you order" place, but our service has been consistently (although a little slower during pandemic for food to arrive) good and sometimes really great. I'd like to go back to Cowfish, but the one time we ate there the service was... not good... and with labor issues being what they are, we haven't wanted to risk going back.

I only drank shakes there. I didn't eat anything else. And the shakes were good. But definitely not cheap.

Agreed - my BIL drug us there, swore it was the best ever. We were underwhelmed, one & done for us.

NBC sports grill was my favorite of all the places to eat ay CityWalk last time I went.
Agreed! I liked Cowfish a lot, but NBC Grill was the best meal of our trip. And good prices to boot. Their buffalo chicken mac & cheese was the best I've ever had, and I've had a lot to compare it to...

Just finished our meal. Ambiance was great. Service was excellent. Appetizers were delish - especially the totchos and chocolate almond bread. That’s where it ended. 3 out of 4 entrees were a mess. I had the chocolate crusted pork tenderloin and it just didn’t work. I expected more savory but the sauce was very sweet. I’d also expect more for my $27 than 4 small bites of pork, 2 pieces od over steamed cauliflower and mashed unseasoned sweet potatoes.

My wife had the Chicken Brece and it was extremely dry with a weird cooking gas or warmer flavor and the Demi glacé was bitter. My daughter had the southern fried chicken sandwich and the chicken was over cooked so the coating was burned and the sandwich bread was dry to the point of being stale/crumbling.

Don’t get the hype at all. We dined here the first month it was open and felt it was very meh but was excited to try it again since I heard the me I had changed. It’s still a no for me. Portion sizes and food prep and bad choices of seasonings/presentation are killing an otherwise beautiful venue. Maybe I’m in the minority since the place was packed but yea.
The hype for Toothsome’s is similar to the hype for Space 220. We’ve done both and don’t plan to eat at either again.

(Toothsome’s milkshakes are awesome, but you don’t need a reservation to try one.)

I think it’s the ambiance and uniqueness of the settings that draw people to Toothsome’s and Space 220.

What!? Is there such a thing as too much butter???

In my experience the food was acceptable. Our boys '"loved" the milkshakes, but really only ate about 1/4 of them. It was fine. But for the $125 price tag for dinners and deserts, we're going to skip it on our next trip and just make a big deal out of gelato at PBH where we are staying.

If you've never been try it once. I wouldn't call this a don't-miss kind of restaurant, tho.

We managed to score a last minute reservation. I had the salmon with veggies and rice, my kids had the mushroom flatbread and the kids burger, and we shared the Brussels sprouts and chocolate bread appetizers. I also got the white chocolate martini. All were good except my veggies were very undercooked. We skipped the milkshakes, they just didn't look appetizing to me at all, and instead got chocolates and macarons on the shop side. You can't order these at the restaurant, but have to join the queue which was disorganized to say the least, and the cookies and chocolates were not really worth it. Ironically, I would go there again for the entrees, but would skip dessert entirely, or maybe just get one of the cakes or sundaes to share.
