We took our dog Lilly (the blue tick coonhound we found about two months ago, for those keeping track!) to be spayed. The vet's office called me a few moments ago to tell me that she was awake and doing great after surgery BUT...

She had already been spayed!!

What...the...deuce???

We had taken her to our regular vet for a checkup and for shots two weeks ago. She couldn't see any spay scar or anything and gave us all the info to get low cost spay done through the humane society. We scheduled the appt with the humane society's recommended vet (great place) and I suppose THEY didn't see any spay scar either.

My poor lilly Belle! Surgery for nothing.

Poor baby.

It's hard to see a scar sometimes. When we adopted our Miniature Schnauzer, the rescue vet thought they saw a scar but couldn't be quite sure. She wasn't in her foster home for long, and was still young, so there was still a chance she'd go into heat. I took her to my vet and she searched and searched and finally found a faint line she thought could be a spay scar. Lucy even has a pink belly with white hair and it was still hard to see.

Thankfully, she never went into heat so we can rest assured she really was spayed!

Maybe they'll give you a discount =)

That happened with our older female cat. We adopted her b/c the humane society told us she was at least 10 and was unfixed (we wanted a cat who was less likely to be adopted). Needless to say after we had dropped her off for her appointment the vet called us and said not only was she fixed, she was young. She was around 1, not 10 like they had been told. It'll be 11 years soon, and she's getting grumpy but is still my sweetheart.

Thank you for saving Lilly!

I was told it is often very difficult to tell. The MHS tattooed a little circle with a slash through it on our dog when they spayed her.

I was surprised that they also did a tattoo on our male cat when they neutered him. I thought that would be a more obvious alteration!

Our old (now deceased) greyhound had an S tattood on her belly.

At least they didn't "see" a scar and tell you that, and THEN months later she had puppies....

Happened to DH's dog from the Humane Society, years ago....

Hope the puppy is feeling ok :)

I hope your dog recovers well. I think tattooing/marking should be done more on animals to avoid these situations.

Aww..she;s been sleeping all evening! Usually she is rambunctious and silly. Tonight she is a little black, brown and speckly lump on the couch. Even my big doofie lab mix is leaving her be, and he LOVES frolicking with her.

I think it also depends on how young Lily was when she was spayed. When I got my kitty at 12 weeks old, she had a 1" straight scar from being spayed that morning. It looked huge on her at the time. The vet that was giving a complimentary vet visit said not to bring her in for close to a month and then he would take out the stitches.

By the time I brought her in, she had grown so much that her 1" scar was down to 1/2". The vet was bashing the ets at the shelter, saying they probably didn't spay her properly as her incision was too small. That they must have left some parts that should have come out. That there was no way they could have removed everything with such a tiny incision.

He really scared me. I thought she might need to be spayed again - except I did see the original incision. It was huge in comparison to the tiny size of the cat at the time. Had I brought her in to a vet within the 2 week time frame the shelter said she was guaranteed for, he would have seen a much bigger incision.

I actually didn't like the vet because of that. He scared the heck out of me, all to boast how his services were better. I thought, this is why he has to give out complimentary visits, because he can't keep clients. :sad2:

I haven't flipped my kitty over, but I bet her scar would be hard to find now. :magnify:

My grumpy girl has 2 scars on her tummy one from the spaying and one from last year when she had a lump on one of her mammery glands. The vet thought it was a tumour so all the chain on one side was removed, but when they stuck a needle in to it for the lab to test it only fluid came out. It was a nice cyst not a tumour, mind you she now has one side with nipples and one side without.

You can't see our dog's scar but you can feel it. Heck, when I was pregnant with our twins my OB couldn't find my scar from my previous C-Section :thumbsup2:thumbsup2. That changed with the twins though.

If anyone checked my dog, they'd never be able to tell by sight that she's been spayed. Our vet uses lasers to do it. And as far as I know, there's no tattoo or anything on her to indicate it.

my sister adopted 2 cats from a rescue society and was told they werent spayed. she took them in to get spayed together and when they went to spay the first cat they found she had already been spayed so they didnt spay the other cat.....well.....several weeks later the second cat went into heat so she had to be spayed while she was in heat which isnt the best operation to be done.
