Okay. So someone was doing something outside and every time Joker hit Batman with a snowball, the sound outside was timed perfectly. So it actually seemed like your sig had sound to it. I was so confused for a moment.

While some folks here are still in combat, there are actually some interesting sub-discussions occurring here! It's not as bad as it looks by sheer post count alone.

I'm somewhat of a lurker here, and a sort of advanced Disney fan. But the one thing that I've always felt: this board is a great benefit to me that I do not have to pay for! Who am I to tell a huge community of volunteers how to do it?

I think the disconnect for me with the OP's perspective is the assumption that there's anyone in this community (or the broader Disney community online) that could make the change she suggested by agreeing with her. There is no one in that position.

Personally I like to think my communications are clear, but it's not my right to impose that on others.

As an aside I've been having fun thinking about the fact that Disney acronyms have been around a lot longer than online acronyms. ELP, EDL and DACS might not trip from the tongue as frequently today as they once did, but have always been within my vocabulary when describing the parks!

The change I am suggesting would effect people so little that as far as I can tell the responses I'm getting are based mostly on an emotional response to what is being taken as a personal attack. I can see where a theoretical person who has been posting here for years wouldn't even have it occur to them that they might sometimes be hard to understand to new users. Especially if they are in the context of replying to a question. They use the acronym because that is what they have used for years and it has not occurred to the person they are responding to might not understand. This is not any reflection on their character or any other personal flaw. However, if somebody then brings up that they are hard to understand or confusing and it is pointed out that a lot of this could be cleared up by taking an action that would literally effect them a couple times a week and each time would only take very little effort then why not spend the time on a couple extra keystrokes. The consensus response I'm getting is because they don't want to or don't want to be understood by new people (yes that response is in this thread) or don't care about new people or if they went to France they would need to speak French.

I've stayed out of this discussion but have been following it. Regardless of my opinion on the use of initials or not, I think your suggestion, while noble at heart because you want to help the newbies and those not-in-the-know, is not that practical. Think about how many more posts would have to be generated by the admins to say, "Sorry, the rules are, no initials/acronyms in titles and please define your initial the first time you use them." Someone a few posts back suggested that you should do your posts that way and see if it catches on. But the reality is, despite your desire to change the established norms here, it's not likely to happen. I can't see how this could effectively be put into place.

I have seen, on many posts, people chiming in on reply #3 or reply #133, "What's (e.g.) ADR?" Probably 3-4 people will just respond quickly with "Advanced Dining Reservations." And I bet that person will go use ADR next time when they have a question about it. It's just an evolution.

I get your concern and I get your suggestion. I just don't think it's very practical to administer. Just my two cents.

And after typing that out a few times, it would get shortened to "strani/aitapdyitftyut" as the poster realized that sometimes initials are easier.

Maybe that is why everybody is so upset. It didn't occur to me that people think I want it to be an enforced rule of the forum. That isn't what I was suggesting at all. I was just suggesting it as an etiquette thing. If you don't want to do it that is fine. I just think it will be helpful if people did.

Lol, yes. I too have to check myself from using them IRL. DH, thankfully, understands them so it isn't a huge deal. Besides, after years of dealing with military acronym speak from him, and having to just figure it out since thr military wasn't going to stop using them, it is only fair that he learn the Disney acronym speak for me

So-- did I have to wade through some abbreviations at first? Well, sure. But that is such a tiny price to pay for the time and money this board saves my family each year as we plan our WDW vacations. Wow, this was started because of my thread! I've loosely followed the past couple of days but I've been enjoying time at WDW so only peeked in while on busses or in the evening. If you go back to that thread, you will note that when you asked what all the abbreviations were, I kindly gave you a list. From what I've read, this is exclave my the solution many have offered throughout the thread. Even though you were a bit nasty in the way you stated your "question", most people are happy to help out and explain.

I have read all the pages of this thread but haven't weighed in. I will just say this.

This is not the first Forum I have been a member of. Some of them are very specific as to topic and acronyms, abbreviations, initialisms are common and translations readily available in stickies etc. I took the time to learn. Asked questions when confused.

That said, I have taken the OP's suggestion to heart to a certain degree. I now look to the post count of the person who asks a question and respond based on the only thing I have to go by. If they are under 100 posts? Well? I will respond as the OP requested....with all the words, followed by the acronym. I am not choosing a side here...just remembering that I was a newbie once and when I ask a question as a newbie, I might not understand the answer fully without the list of acronyms. I do have a printed out copy of the "commonly used acronyms for the DIS " It took a while, but it was fun.

I lurked for a long time (since 2009) before joining. I joined because I needed answers to questions about my 2012 trip to Disneyland and California in general. At the time, there were a number of members who had great advice on other places in California. It was easy to "lurk" for my 2010 trip to Orlando since many members had the same questions as me.

So, it is hard to tell whether or not a post or thread is being made by a "real" newbie or a long time "lurker". I have decided to assume the "low post count" member is a newbie and actually type out "Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party" at least once (unless another poster beat me to it).

My arbitrary cutoff of less than 100 posts is just that...arbitrary. But, I do understand and hope that the OP learns the lingo over time.


Also, after coming on this site, I do realize that Disney acronyms are pretty universal. Pardon the pun.
