Too Many Acronymns!

I don't think anyone has commented yet on the fact that the OP misspelled "acronyms" in the thread title.

I didnt think it was pertinent to the conversation. Nor do I think it's cool to point out somebody's short comings. I knew what the OP meant. Everyone else did too. Making fun of them, or pointing out a small error to make them feel bad isn't going to improve the conversation.

I am so spelling challenged I never call anyone out over it. :lmao: Which is probably a good reason why I love acronyms so much. A lot less I have to spell (or in my case, rely on spell check to spell for me). I can't tell you how many years of talking Disney I have had to do before I could spell restaurant without having to let spell check correct it

Can I just add my two pennoth here. I am a member of a couple of other travel forums, one of which uses practically no acronyms at all, and the other (which is a British board) tends to use 3-letter acronyms. I do now understand a lot of them, but it did take a while. Looking at the list of acronyms, all went well until some cropped up several times to mean different things. I don't know how anyone is supposed to know what is being talked about under those circumstances.

Now the main point. I am a Brit, and we use different terms for things, and I do get a bit confused at times.

For example:

A&E = Accident & Emergency (our ER department)
DLP = Disneyland Paris
DLR = Docklands Light Railway (one of the London transport systems)

So, I do confuse easily as my brain automatically clicks onto the ones I know the most.

MNSSHP is a well known acronym for us, incidentally.

I also don't get TSMM - what's the second M stand for?

At the end of the day, though, why are you giving the OP such a hard time? Why does everything have to be 'I am right so you are wrong' and black and white? The world is full of grey areas. For a site which is supposed to be friendly, I have read more personal attacks and vitriole in the last month or so than I care to think about!

If you don't agree with something someone has posted, instead of launching an attack, how about you just close the thread and move on.

I'm sorry if this is out of line but the acronyms are getting out of control on this forum. Half the time I can't figure out what the poster is trying to say.

Is it really that hard to just type the word? At least use the word once and then abbreviate it so people that don't live on this board 365 days a year know what you are talking about.

Thank you! I'm on these threads a lot and I still don't know what people are talking about sometimes. Usually I can figure it out but sometimes I just give up because I'm frustrated lol.

Also thanks for the links to abbreviations :thumbsup2 those should help

Hey, OP...

Welcome to the Interwebs. This is NOT the only place that uses acronyms and related jargon. Don't like it?

No need since we all knew what the original poster meant. Which isn't that the point of this entire thread? Understanding the meaning of some of the posts.

I think many of us are just lazy. Some don't want to look up the acronyms every time we want to read a post and others don't want to be bothered typing a few extra keystrokes.

I don't think people are giving the OP a hard time as much as they're saying that she can't come into a forum where using acronyms is an established practice and expect people to change because she doesn't like it.

It's not always a few, though. MNSSHP is just 6 keystrokes. Spelling it out in its entirety (including spaces) is 37.

The OP is going to change nothing by their ranting and raving. Except that maybe some posters will start using acronyms more than they were.

Honestly, if you are finding the posts confusing, ask for clarification. Don't attack a bunch of people and expect it to get you anywhere.

I didn't know that one. Is it really called Mickey's not so Scary Halloween Party? Doesn't everyone just call it the Halloween Party?

Nope. It is Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. And don't you dare shorten it!!!;)

I think that there is also a Halloween party at Disneyland with a slightly different name. That is why posters use an initialism that is specific to the one at MK. I believe that there are also threads that have compared the two; that is why there is a context-less initialism so that the comparisons can be made without referring to the location.

In other words. RTFM. I always hated that response as well because unfortunately it is rare for anyone to keep TFM updated. It is an attitude that is dismissive to people that come here asking questions for the first time. It drives people away and reduces participation. Most people aren't going to ask because it can be intimidating to do so. If this is like most internet forums about 90%+ of the traffic to the site is from people who never create an account. Actual posters will be a small percentage of that final 10% and a smaller percentage of that would be bold enough to break in and ask what PoTC stands for because they don't want to look dumb. If you've actually read my posts you'll see that I'm not recommending that acronyms aren't used at all. Keep in mind the context of who you are responding to and write as appropriate. I think I'm going to stop responding to this thread. I've made my point and anything further I would just be trolling to keep the thread bumped to the top. People are getting offended and taking this as a personal attack on them.

I would have said RTFM if I meant RTFM. "Context is king." If you read my post, it comes across to me as a fairly polite explanation of how things are and why things are. You inferred attitude where there was none. Oh well, YAGE.
