Too Many Acronymns!

I hate DH. And all of the other D[insert abbreviation for person here] abbreviations.

In general it means "Dear Husband," which is lame. Around here, people say it means "Disney Husband," which just makes me cringe.

So I don't use those particular abbreviations. I just type out "husband," or "daughter," or whatever. What I don't do is ask other people to stop using them.

Since you quoted me, I will take it that you are directing that towards me. :confused3 I didn't ask anybody to stop using them.

You seem to have a chip on your shoulder about this topic. In the words of Elsa, "Let it Go". ;)

I always hated that response as well because unfortunately it is rare for anyone to keep TFM updated. It is an attitude that is dismissive to people that come here asking questions for the first time. It drives people away and reduces participation. Most people aren't going to ask because it can be intimidating to do so. If this is like most internet forums about 90%+ of the traffic to the site is from people who never create an account. Actual posters will be a small percentage of that final 10% and a smaller percentage of that would be bold enough to break in and ask what PoTC stands for because they don't want to look dumb.

The DISboards is one of the most active forums I've ever seen. I don't think that it has an issue with lack of participation or bringing in new members. I also see plenty of new people asking what acronyms stand for...if someone is too timid to do that, then they'll likely be too timid to ask any questions at all.

Me too! I can usually figure them out, but what is RTFM and TFM?

RTFM is an old Internet-ism For "Read the Fine Manual" which comes from the fact that the Unix help system is called "man", for example. in another window I need just now need to look something up so I did "man ssh_config" to look at the section about the Secure Shell (ssh) configuration file.

N.B. some people have other word that begin with F that will work instead of Fine.

Here is the full quote. I've redacted the username. Tell me this isn't confusing.

At least I can see it was sent from a phone which makes me feel understanding of the person not wanting to type it out but it is still unintelligible.

Sorry, there is nothing confusing about the post to me. I understood 100% of it and had I been writing it, would have probably written it the same way. I can't fathom why it would start an argument. Other than posting the sky is blue can cause an argument with some here. There are some here that just argue

Yes, "fine" is certainly not the original word. ;) It is commonly used on Unix boards especially to blow off newbies whose questions are deemed to be too simple to bother with. I can guarantee those people don't mean "fine" when they write it. The problem is that updating manuals is terrible work and nobody wants to do it so they're never up to date.

Alesia wasn't directing her comment at you, she was directing it at the OP.

It isn't confusing. ;) I could see how it could be to a newcomer, but according to the information under your user name, you've been a member of this community for over four years. A&E is a pretty new one, but it's not a hard one to figure out, given how popular Frozen is.

To the people to come here and say this board SHOULD be anything, this board is exactly what it SHOULD be. If you don't like the information here, if you out Don't like the "initial isms" use google for your information. I like coming here, and I've not been intimidated when asking what an acronym means. I have asked questions and gotten appropriate answers. Don't be rude, ask questions. People here LOVE giving answers. They LOVE giving their Disney expertise. I like learning. It's my job to learn the way they speak. If I have additional questions I ask. People can't hide behind being "intimidated" in an online forum.

We don't blow off just newbies with it. If it's in the manual, and it's clear the person didn't spend the 30 seconds to research it themselves then it's considered the right answer.

The real blow off is when someone asks a question, and they get the answer of "did you read/check the code?" If I wanted to look though and understand 20k lines of code I would, I just need to know When I set the foo, the bar won't be affected, unless the --widget switch is used.

AKA RTFM

Ok. I'm done now. You may all commence your personal attacks on my post history and personal character. I'll respond no further.:firefight

I assume RTFM is Read The F---ing Memo and TFM just drops off "read".

Thanks. A new one for me. Although I have read numerous threads here on Dis.and have not seen this used. I personally have no problem with acronyms or abbreviations. I use my phone lots so the less I have to type the better.

As long as the initialism is common usage among the board, then I feel that the use is somewhat reasonable. However:

Should it be SDMT or 7DMT?
Should it be TSM or TSMM?

I prefer the latter to both, personally. Is the OP reacting to the differing initialisms for the same phrase? I tend to agree that common initialisms should be used. Making up initialisms is probably not the best way to be heard.

Last thought for this post: I agree that seeing MNSSHP is an annoyance, but I also agree that typing it out is annoying as well (maybe slightly more).

No the bolded part wasn't directed at you, as you didn't mention anything about asking anyone to stop. It was just a general comment on the topic.

I was actually kind of agreeing with you. My point was simply that it's possible not like something but not try to change everyone else.

Well, actually, I was wrong about the M (manual does make more sense than memo), but I don't think I've seen it used here before. ;)

Is the OP reacting to the differing initialisms for the same phrase?

No, the OP doesn't seem to like the use of them at all.

the only acronyms I don't like (and I can't even be totally sure I've never used them, but try not to) are DH DW DS DH DMIL Dwhoever.

Sorry everyone! ;)

I came here as a complete newbie to WDW (getting ready for our first visit)... and for me, I've enjoyed learning the acronyms :D Sometimes they baffled me (MNSSHP threw me, but fortunately the "dictionary" came in handy)

This is the first forum I've stuck with, mostly because people have been so helpful. If I haven't understood things and couldn't find the answer on the list, I've asked and learnt something new. I often use the boards on my mobile, so the shorthand is very helpful in typing, and makes it easier.

OP: I'm sorry you don't like it, but I don't think everyone reacts in the same way you do to them. For me, it was a fun part of learning the "code" and helped me get to know more about our much anticipated holiday! :)

It's so funny, I understood the entire post that the OP quoted!! That was fun!! Can we do another?

lol When I first came here I'll admit some of the acronyms baffled me! I didn't even know there was a dictionary lol!! I guess I never asked! I figured them out though, mostly through context, and trust me I'm acronym challenged!! It runs in the family!!

I think the OP is being a semi-troll as they keep saying things like "Well now that you posters have done this and this!", IMHO. If anyone asks what that means I'd be happy to translate!

:)
