My DD's ENT thinks that DD will need her tonsils out shortly. She has already had her adenoids taken out, but they may need to come out again too. She wants to wait until DD turns 3 in a few months to do the surgery. While DD isn't having any major issues right now, her ENT feels that the tonsils and adenoids are becoming obstructive again (her adenoids were almost fully obstructing her nasal passages before the first surgery). She may or may not get another set of ear tubes during this surgery. We're waiting to see if she has any ear infections between now and her 3rd birthday, apparently.

Anyways, does anyone on here have experience with a child getting a tonsillectomy at age 3? I understand that the recovery is much harder than from the adenoidectomy alone. Will DD bounce back pretty quickly because she is so young? Her ENT said that she won't be able to go to the playground for 14 days after the surgery:eek: I am not sure how DD will handle that because she's so active!

i had a niece and nephew who had theirs taken out. my nephew just had his taken out a week ago, he was crabby the first few days but is doing much better now. yes, no playground or any type of rough play like jumping on a trampoline, etc. was very hard for him. my niece was back to her normal self right after the surgery, wasnt crabby or anything.

I had my tonsils out at 2 1/2 ish. I had no problems until the 10th day when I started hemorraging. But that was a long time ago, and may not be a risk in today's medical world :confused3

My DD has hers out at age 3, and did great!!!:thumbsup2

She recovered alot faster than I thought she would, and doing this was like a miracle for her. Before she her tonsils out, she was sick all the time - it was terrible!!!!

Good luck in making your decision, and I pray she does well with whatever you decide.

DS had his adenoids and tonsils taken out at age 3. He was in and out on the same day. He was very soar and was out of it for the 1st and 2nd day. He didn't want to eat anything but ice pops for the first 3 days. After that we slowly gave him solids and he was back to his normal self in a week. Remember to not give her anything red after the surgery, no red jello, or ice pops. Also nothing milky like ice ream and shakes. It produces mucus and is not good for them. I made that mistake and didn't listen to the Dr and gave him a shake 2 days after his surgery and it was gross. Your DD will be fine and the surgery itself was very quick. Kids do bounce back quickly. I was told that it is the worst for adults to have the surgery.

FYI, DS had sleep apnea and apraxia of speech. After his surgery he no longer has sleep apnea and his speech has progressed so well. I am so glad I went forward and had him have the surgery at age 3.

one of my ds had his out at 21 months old. he stayed in the hospital a week and then came home with an iv in his arm and we had to go back to get fluids everyday for another 5 days. then he was fine. he . he just was so little but had bad apnea.
