I finally tried Tonga Toast the other day. My question is this, is the bread supposed to be hard and are the bananas supposed to be black? I was not that impressed and I was just wondering if maybe I got a bad batch.

The bread shouldn't be hard but is crisp on the outside.

Were the bananas black all the way through or just darkened on the outside? Bananas do darken as they are exposed to heat.

It's not a dish for everyone but for my DH and I think many others, it wouldn't be a trip to WDW without it.

Wow!! That doesn't sound too great...we haven't been to WDW in a couple of years, but we're going in December for a week and plan to eat at Kona Cafe TWICE since we're such big fans of the Tonga Toast. Sorry if you had a bad experience!!!

The bread on top was hard like a crouton and the banana was black all the way through. I think I am going to chalk it up to a bad batch.

A fellow Disser clued me that there are two versions of Tonga Toast--a deep fried version that I found God-AWFUL!! And a grilled version which was marvelous. :goodvibes

First time I had it, I had the grilled version--the second time I got the deep fried and was horrified by the grease-- I was so looking forward to having Tonga Toast again.:scared1:

So I'll give it another try and will be sure to ask for the grilled version... Dark banana wouldn't stop me--bananas turn naturally unless quickly dipped in an acidic water bath (think lemon juice and water).
But hard, as opposed to crispy, bread would put me off--just like excess grease. :hippie:

We love Tonga Tst!! But yes there are 2 versions of how it's cooked. Also found that out the hard way. Although after 1 bite of the 2nd awful version we sent it back and recieved the stuff I had fondly remembered! :)

Does anyone know if the grilled version can be ordered at Captain Cooks? We were hoping to get the Tonga Toast at Captain Cook's, but we really would prefer the grilled version. Thanks for the help!

Kona now serves the Tonga Toast with a little pitcher of strawberry sauce, it is identical to the strawberry soup at 1900 Park Faire. It makes the tonga toast taste even better!

Do they have both options on the menu? Or do you have to request the grilled version? Wondering about Capt Cook's Tonga toast too.........
