Instead of a coffee maker, which usually has breakable glass parts, consider getting an electric kettle. I've had mine for 4-5 years now. It's been to two different jobs with me, and a couple of different trips. It's just a plastic pitcher-looking thing with a bottom plate. On most of them, the pitcher is heat-proof, so you can take it off the plate (which also doesn't get hot) and set it anywhere you want without worrying about damage. (And fewer worries about little ones getting burned!)
You get a small-to-large amount of nice, clean, piping hot water that's safely stored, easy to handle, and easy to use for more than one thing at a time (tea and instant soup, for example).
