To take our carseat or not to take it..

Hello, I am planning our first trip to Disney in November. My son will have just turned two so I did have to purchase him a ticket for the plane. We have never flown anywhere before so I am questioning whether or not to bring his car seat. I was thinking it would be easier on the plane to have him strapped into his familiar seat but then I'm not sure what to do with it for the rest of our trip. We are not renting a car & I'm assuming the Magical Express bus will not have seat belts so he would not use it then. We are taking a cab to & from Universal one day but I was told you can request a cab with a car seat..is that true?

So I'm just not sure if it is worth the hassle of having to lug it through the airport, to the hotel, storing it somewhere in our already cramped room & then back again if he will only use in on the plane. I'll also have our stroller & two other children so the less "stuff" we have to bring the better. Any advice from you veteran travelers?? Thank you in advance!

When we took our (then)2 1/2 year old twin grandsons we took their carseats to use in the plane, but we were also renting a car so would need them for WDW. We loved having them on the plane because they got right in them and sat for the duration of the trip with no fuss. Still there are some issues that can arise, such as the fact that their feet our closer to the seat in front so kicking can be a problem.

We used this strap to attach their carseats to our luggage for lugging through the airport: http://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Tod...926271&sr=8-1&keywords=car+seat+luggage+strap

We took them again at age 3 and checked their carseats with the luggage and they did fine staying in the plane seats with just a seat belt on. I have to admit, I felt better when they were in carseats because one of them (when in the plane seat without a carseat) kept loosening the plane seat strap. Of course I kept tightening it again but it was a little worrisome.

You mainly have to do what you think will work best for you and your family. You can't use a carseat on any of the Disney transportation so that makes it a little more of a pain to bring a carseat just for the plane.

As far as the taxi to Universal, I don't know how that works. Whatever you decide, have a great trip.

We are opting to use a car seat for our 1 yr old and just the seatbelt for the 2 yr old on the plane. We are taking magical express so no car seat needed for ground trans.

A friend was a flight attendant and based on her stories of injured children during turbulence, the stuff my friend who used to be a rental car agent has said (they reuse carseats even after a fender bender which is a HUGE no no), and the recommendations of carseats dot org, we always bring and use ours.

We have over 20 flights under our belt and DD is 3.

We prefer flying with Southwest, use a radian rxt and gogobabyz so even though the radian is around 30lbs, it's quite easy. We either wheel our (now) toddler through the airport although most of the time unless we're in a huge crowd, she walks and we put our carryons in the carseat and wheel it. It rolls right up the aisle, and DH puts it in while we wait a minute a row ahead. Then I put her in, our bags and we're good to go.

Once landing in Phoenix we slammed into the ground so hard from a wind sheer the wheels had flats, and another time landing at Midway in the winter, the plane must have skidded too far down the runway (we were still on it, but it was a very rough landing and we ended up kinda sideways). It took forever for us to be pulled or escorted (not sure which we couldn't see) to the gate.

I also like that we have it on the other end for our rental car and I know it's clean, safe, and DD is comfortable in it.

Carseats dot org has tons of info on it from where the FAA sticker should be and even paperwork you might want to carry on another airline (Southwest has never asked us) in case a flight attendant tries to give you a hard time.

The person in front of DD can't really put their seat back all the way, so we tell them before they sit down and always offer to buy them a drink. No one has EVER been anything but nice about it. (My DH usually also offers to help them later with their bag at the luggage carousel.)

There are seatbelts on the bus, but they are not safe for a young child. There is an FAA approved restraining system you can rent on ebay or buy for $70, but my friend has it and it's a complete pain in the butt. You have to disable the person behind you's traytable and it's very easy for the kiddo to unlatch.

We almost bought a smaller/lighter $65 seat (seneca I think it was called) for travel but DD is so tall that we stayed with what we have.

For taxis, we bring our own seat and request a minivan. But it's also really inexpensive to rent a car in Disney. We're renting a minivan and it's around $20 a day.

Can I also offer some toddler in-flight tips too? Bring small presents to unwrap during the flight. Triangle crayons that won't roll off a table and a coloring book are great as are the magnet sets of animals and other scenes (cars, the ocean, zoo, a farm). I hit the dollar store before we go for little surprises. Snacks and something to drink during takeoff and landing are a must to pop the ears and a lolly for worst case scenario. And then there's the ipad with some videos when it gets really too much for them to sit still any more.

Have a great trip!

Oh! And the kicking! I have a big carryon bag that I pull out and up under her legs for DD to rest her feet on. And I take off her shoes.

It stops the kicking. (And my kiddo has mild SPD so she kicks and flaps when she's excited so I know the bag to rest on works).

I would. A 2-year-old is unlikely to fit in the plane seat belt - they don't tighten down enough. And I know with my son that age, the more restrained, he is, the saner I am.

Renting a seat is not recommended. I wouldn't use any seat I didn't know the history of.

We never take them when going to WDW. One of the reasons we love staying on property! We have taken them before on other nonDisney trips when we are renting a car... but never used them on the plane.

You don't want the car seats the cabs provide. I needed one in an emergency once. It was filthy, missing pieces, the harness was mis-routed, and I'm pretty sure it was expired (couldn't tell for sure because all the labels were missing).

A toddler should always be in a carseat. The ME you cannot use them on. But if you have a taxi, never trust another person's carseat unless you know specifically where its been.
And be sure its still current and still good! Carseat safety is so important. Think of it more as safety than an actual hassle.

Great tip, thank you.

I would. Safety first always. Just make sure your carseat is approved for air travel (it should say so on the sticker) as the seats on planes are smaller and it has to be the right kind. The flight attendants can and will check your seat to make sure it is approved for flight.

Safe travels :thumbsup2

Our DD had just turned 2 on our last trip and we brought her carseat for the plane. I would not feel safe with a child that small just in the airplane seatbelt. It also kept her restrained so she couldn't crawl out of the seat and fuss to walk around. We have a Radian so it folds flat into a carrying bag, and we got a small folding handtruck so we can wheel it through the airport. We took ME and just put it under the bus with luggage, then stored it in the corner in our room. Her safety is worth more than whatever hassle it is.

Our younger DD will be under 2 on our next trip but we bought her a seat and will bring her carseat for the plane. No way would I ever fly with my baby in my lap.

Can I ask where you are renting a mini van from for $20? I can't find one that cheap. We are going the first week of November and are trying to find the best way to get from the airport to Shades of Greeen. TIA

Also curious about a $20 daily rental on a mini van. What a steal!

We had a CARES harness when my son was that young (a pp mentioned it above - it can be rented via ebay I know or it's not hard to find them used on Craigslist).

I never found it a pain, especially boarding in the early part of boarding (we usually fly SW). It does go under the tray of the person behind you, but I could usually have it installed before anyone ever sat there so they never knew.

We did one flight with a carseat (we were going to need it on the other end) and it was a DISASTER (he screamed until he ended up on my lap, unsecured, with a nice buckled in car seat next to us)!! From then on, we just carried it without using it if we needed it on the other end. Again, pp mentioned it - we only used it for Travel - it was a Cosco Scenera. Maybe $40 (I think less). It was lightweight so easy to schlepp around.

All that said, if I were going to need a carseat on the other end, I'd take it with me.

Haha we travel a lot. It's easier to rent a car than make all your ADRs. :lmao:

My best car prices? Kayak, mousesavers, and carrentals dot org (I'm on my phone and forget the exact name but it's like that) will bring up the best prices/specials. Keep in mind at some cities it's way cheaper to rent outside the airport, but at Disney, it's at the airport.

It's usually cheaper in the end to rent from alamo or their partner national at disney. Then join Alamo and National's rental club things and rent directly from them (whoever's lowest) if nothing is lower than $50. They constantly email you lower prices and specials. There's Disney visa specials too. Then there's also costco member specials including where you can add a second driver for free. Many will stack (especially with Alamo).

(I do not recommend local, unknown companies. They look less upfront but if you see their yelp pages, you will know why to avoid them. At a bigger company, they seem to be better if there's ever a problem.)

If you're just getting a small car, it's super cheap to rent at disney. I saw rates of under $15/day and you will be sent upgrades all the time. I saw one today of $9 with an upgrade before taxes. For a minivan or SUV you have to be patient. Sometimes in some cities the SUVs are less than the cars because of gas prices but we need the space so for us it's great!

Last time we had a weird situation where we had to go the first night to Tampa (and Tampa rentals were crazy. Our best deal was $99 a night!:scared:) and DH used the disney site return. He said it was a pita using that system because they were SO disorganized. They told him they were out of minivans and he was like, well, I JUST NOW returned one. Can I rerent it? (For $22/night -- same car!) When he returned the minivan it also took him a long time and then it took him almost 2 hours to ride the bus back too.

So this time we're renting from the airport because direct to direct, the rates are so much lower than renting on site. When I first booked it was $42/night before taxes but they email you lower rates all the time. You call to switch to the lower rate.

The magic express is great but I didn't like that we couldn't use a carseat and my kiddo gets SO barfy on busses. :crazy2: We had the front first seats last time so that worked out okay, but since I can't guarantee we would this time too, we're renting.

A friend is going to be at Disney and renting for a few nights around the same times as us (universal) and after I sent her prices, her DH is riding the Magic Express or a cab back to the airport to rent because it's less.

(OH! And always walk around the car when you rent and note any damage. I can't tell you how easy it is to forget especially with a kiddo but honestly, it's saved us SO many times!)

HTH!

We always took our carseat on the plane until DD was 4/4.5. We took DS's seat last year even though we only used it on the plane. I wouldn't trust a car seat that is a rental or has been checked since you don't know how it's been treated and if it is still safe.

Definitely take one. You don't know what you'll get for the cab ride. If you weren't going to need one at all, then I'd suggest looking into the CARES harness for the flight IF you thought your child could handle it. I travelled without my husband, with three kids, and several flight legs. So the CARES was the only way I could manage. But my 2.5 year old hated flying. Luckily, I was able to keep him in the CARES, but there's no way I would have been able to keep him in a regular airplane seatbelt. A regular carseat would have been easier on me when in the plane, but by myself, there was just no way. I have experience with checking a carseat that ended up at my destination much later than me, so I carried them through the airport between each flight after that. The CARES harness was super easy to use.

Also, don't forget at car seat for your middle child! Though my 5 year old is in a five-point-harness at home, I'd probably just use a backless booster for the cab when travelling to make it easier. (Just the regular seatbelt on the plane).

DD7 has always used a car seat on the plane. It is more comfortable, she is used to sitting in it and she can easily rest her head when she falls asleep. When she was under 3 we took the Britex, but since we travel often, we bought a FAA approved seat from Target for $40 that is lightweight but much safer than no seat when it gets bumpy.

We have always bought Dd a seat and brought her car seat. She is comfortable in it, and has generally fallen asleep on flights because we time them for nap time as much as possible.

If I were you, op. I would leave the stroller home and rent one from an offsite company like apple strollers or kingdom strollers. There are travel dollies you can attach a car seat to to roll it through the airport, and I believe a child can ride in it in that configuration also. I have always worn Dd through the airport instead of using a stroller...keeps me hands free which makes security so much easier.
