have you found that you do better to do this over the phone or fax (5 days prior) or just when you arrive? If you call or fax, do you direct the call/fax to a particular person or department?

I plan to call Starwood 5 days priors to our mid-November arrival to cash in some SPG points for Club Level priv.s but would love to get a better room (we currently have a standard on the Teacher's Rate). We are SPG Gold members. Anyone ever get a Suite upgrade from a standard? And if so, how did you do it?
