To Iphone owners, I want it but don't need the Internet, help?

So I have an Itouch with a wireless connection at home, I LOVE it. I'm due for a phone upgrade and would love all the features of an itouch, but really do not have a need for the data plan that comes with the iPhone and I don't want to add almost 40 dollars to my existing cell phone bill. Can I buy the iPhone without the data plan, but still use the wireless connection in my home, like the itouch? What's the best similar phone to the iPhone that doesn't require a data plan?

From what I understand you can buy one that is unlocked and jailbroken on Ebay or Craigslist. Just put your own sim card in it.

The problem with getting an unlock phone is that the iPhone needs data to receive the visual voicemail. So either way, you'll be using data (and getting charged). If you want an iPhone, you jsut have to get the data plan. There is no other phone like the iPhone that doesn't require a data plan. The closest is the blackberry curve, which requires the blackberry data plan, which is more than the iPhone plan.

Can you sell your iTouch and live happily with a new iPhone with the data plan? Because you will not be able to get the iPhone without it.
