To buy or not to buy... A home resort dilemma

Don’t have any points yet, so nothing to match. That why I was thinking of doing direct first so I can avoid a long wait on the waitlist. I’d rather try to match the UY myself on the resale market than be at the mercy of a guide to find something. Ive heard some waitlist horror stories.

So, then you will tell your guide what you want and he will tell you if it's available and/or tell you what he currently has and you can decide if you want anything he has to offer . You will likely run into a longer wait / less available at BC vs BWV.

When I was initially looking to buy, I was set on an Oct UY but undecided on resort. My guide told me every resort he had in Oct UY. Then, a few weeks later when I decided what I wanted, what he had available was completely different. Lol

My Oct UY is great for me, but I can see it will be hard to find matching contracts via resale. Looking back, I probably could have settled for Aug or Sept.

Buying resale first is what most people recommend.

Have you taken a look at this....

Thanks for all the input. I just pulled the trigger and bought 75 pt and Boardwalk, Dec UY!!!!!! Very excited. I’m sure we will add a second home via resale soon. Lol

Congrats neighbor! Dec is the most common UY so that will make it easier to add a resale.

Did you read up on understand UY? I believe you mentioned that late fall trips were a time of preference.

I did and I decided to go with December for a couple of reasons.
1. It’s what they had. Lol
2. It’s the most common for BWV and for many other so hopefully that will make add ons easier.
3. Late fall is currently a time we like. However as my kids get older they and/or their teachers will likely balk at them missing school that time of year and we will be forced to traditional break times for which a Dec UY is perfect.
4. I’m not terribly worried about it as we are generally not cancel people. I put a lot of thought into exactly when we go and barring a hurricane or death in the family, we go.

Ok, just wanted to make certain you understood the benefits of having a good UY. Cancelling and losing points of even just 1 vacation can eat up a lot of savings. Our big cancellations have been due to deaths in the family - happened twice and is something that never would be planned for. But our UY's allowed a lot of time to be able to use the points.

I told my guide that a death in the family would be one of the only reasons we would cancel and he said “oh Disney is very accommodating in situations like that. We will make sure you can still use your points.” Lol we’ll see, but I’m not holding my breath on that promise.

I got "have a magical day", your points are in holding. That was when my mother, who lived with us, passed away unexpectedly just before we were taking a trip for her birthday....with her.

Don't count on very helpful. They can be, but they don't have to be.

About UY... even if you can pick one that will work for you now, it may not work in future. How you deal with it is up to you. Maybe always get insurance? It will at least save maintenance fees, and those are becoming rather expensive.

Good points.

i chose Oct because I don't ever see us wanting to vacation in Florida June-Sept but reality is if one of my kids becomes a teacher or we have grandkids that can't be taken out of school, we will do what we need to do to keep the family vacations continuing.

Who knows.

Ultimately that also led me to an October UY (to start - haha). It's another way to look at it if you don't have a single time you like to go to WDW.
