To Alaska and beyond

As I mention in the last installment we decided to do express walk off. I was VERY worried about this, but Dan was sure we could do it. Turns out he was TOTALLY RIGHT! This was the best choice EVER! I encourage everyone that reads this to do likewise. But I'm ahead of myself.

I set my alarm for 6am to get every last minute thing packed and then have the kids upstair to Beach Blanket for a quick bite. Our server said it would be open for a very short amount of time for those doing express walk off and would have a limited amount of choices. 6 am rolled around and none of us wanted to budge. I finally crawled out of bed around 6:20. I rushed outside to see if we were there yet and guess what! We were just getting ready to go under the Lions Gate Bridge! I didn't miss it after all. It was so beautiful in the morning sun. We snapped some pictures and sun bathed for a few minutes. Then we decided to wrangle the kids out of bed. We got them up, hair combed, teeth brushed, shoes on, and smiling. Well that's a stretch. I asked the kids if they wanted to eat at Beach Blanket or America. They both said America. Done deal.

We did a once over and then dragged our bags to the elevator. It was right at 7 am when we did this. Yesterday they told us that there wouldn't be porters to help in Canada Place. And they said express walk off would start around 7:30. So we figured there wasn't ANY point having them take our bags to the holding area. We might as well drag them off the ship on our own. We found some friends in line. No we didn't cut they were in the back and we just fell in behind them. We talked about our vacations and before we knew it they had cleared the ship and were ready for us to go. Here's how easy it was.

1. We had our custom's declaration in our hand, filled out, ready to go.
2. Our KTTW was in our lanyards hanging around our necks.
3. When it opened they scanned our KTTW cards in their pouches. We didn't even have to take them out.
4. We walked off the ship, up the ramp, around the outside of the holding pen for all the other people's luggage (at this point it was empty)
5. There were two custom's guys at the entrance to Canada place. They were just standing there. Not behind a podium or an official looking desk. Just standing there. Dan handed him our custom's form. He looked it over and said looked good.
6. We walked to the elevator for the parking garage. Pushed P2. Got out. Realized we parked on P1. Waited for the next elevator. Pushed P1. Got out loaded our car. Left.

That was it. It was painless and took literally 10 minuets. The longest part of the process was waiting the half hour for them to clear the ship. Which was worth the wait cause we were able to be like 10th in line and get off NO PROBLEM. We had other people that were in the caravan with us and they were WAY back in line from us. And we met them at the elevator when we were going down to the parking garage. So it took everyone about the same amount of time. It was super fast. I highly recommend it.

Someone asked about this process and mentioned that Canada Place can be a zoo. I can COMPLETELY see how that would be the case if someone didn't do express walk off. If we had to sort through the holding pen to find our luggage and then get in the super long line to get through customs after it was all backed up. Yes I could see it being a nightmare.

The other good thing for use was we were following friends that had been here before and knew the way. Dan and I would have been pretty lost in downtown Vancouver if we had to do it ourselves. We didn't have cell coverage. If you are driving and don't have T-mobile or a international data plan, I would suggest getting GOOD directions printed or a map or something you can follow to get back to the boarder. The streets aren't very well marked and we would have been pretty lost.

We drove back home and made it by 4pm. We said hey they are doing their Muster right now! :)

Thanks for reading. I'm still willing to answer questions. BUT since this is a rolling trip report I suggest people to check back in after you've sailed. Add your own pictures and experiences. Things change from cruise to cruise and I know my information will grow outdated. So lets keep the report rolling. Anyone is welcome to answer questions with their experience from their 2014 cruise! I am excited to hear how other's trips went! Thanks for reading. I feel like a celebrity. :lovestruc

Thank you for all of your pictures and all of your adventures. We are going on June 16th and we're very excited !!! I appreciate all your efforts and comments:banana::cheer2::)

Thanks for the great report - and for the heads up on the bags!

So glad they're not the beach bags (which we just received in April).

I do love my DCL bags!!!

Did you see Snow White on board? My 4 yr old is obsessed and I heard she is on hiatus. Might need to do some expectation managements. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

No she wasn't on board. :( we were disappointed too. It may be a good idea to prep her just in case.

Thanks for the info, time to let she know Snow White is off visiting one of the parks or boats.

Loved your report. I am not planning a cruise to Alaska right now, but have been three times before. Not on Disney thought, so I was interested in how the Disney experience was different.

I was on the December cruise with you out of Galveston, and though we did not meet, your family looks vaguely familiar, so we probably passed somewhere sometime during the cruise.

Thanks so much for doing this and posting pictures.

Sailing in to Tracy Arm right now... Snow White still off visiting. I've seen Tiana roaming and at the gathering there was Ariel, Tiana, Rapunzel, Aurora and I want to say Cinderella in the corner.

Ok one more question, as I am 19 days away from my Alaska cruise. On the first day you got up at 5:30. Where were you driving from? How long was the drive or what time did you arrive in Vancouver. Thanks.

Thanks for the info, this morning, I started the talk about Snow White needing to visit the dwarfs, and starting making up stories of where other character might be if they are not on the boat. That way I hope to create some "Wonder" . Thank you all for posting, it really helps my planning/preparation

We live in Spokane, WA. We got to Surrey, BC where our hotel was around 3. We took Hwy 2 which was a mistake. We got stuck behind slow trucks. Boarder crossing on Memorial Day Weekend took about 30-40 minutes.

Coming back home we took I-5 to the 405 then I-90 to Spokane. We got off the ship at 7:30 and were home by 4. The crossing coming back into the US was only about a 5-10 minute wait.

Thank you so much for your trip report. You did an amazing job and it was such fun to read about your family and your adventures on board. We don't leave for Alaska until next summer but I can't wait and reports like yours help pass the time!

BTW, we LOVE Spokane. It is one of the best cities. We visited a lot when we lived in Walla Walla (reason for screen name). We moved out east a few years ago and really miss the NW and our friends.

Thanks again.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. We had a GREAT time. Dan and I weren't sure going on a cold vacation would be as fun as one to Castaway Cay or somewhere south. But it turned out just perfect. Even the grey colder days were simple breathtaking.

Spokane is a cool little big town. I was born and raised in the area. I've traveled and lived all over America, but my heart is here for sure. We're blessed to live somewhere close to as beautiful as Alaska!

So true! My son was in the NICU up at Deaconess for quite a while so we were "temporary residents" for a month or so. It is a beautiful place to live. You are very lucky for sure :thumbsup2

Thank you for your fabulous trip report. We fly to Vancouver on the 27th, spend two nights on Vancouver Island and sail on June 30. I am so excited - I will be absolutely beside myself in a couple of weeks!!

I was also really looking forward to reading a TR about the first trip of the season (and will probably read everything that comes out between now and June 30!!). Your TR was just the ticket!

We are new to cruising so I have a question about the express walkout - can you please tell me what it is, and how you sign up for it? I don't think I saw the information in the check-in process...

TIA

One question
Did you see anyone wearing jeans to dinner on the nights other than formal and semi formal?
Thanks

Express walk off isn't something you have to sign up for. The night before disembarkation they will give you luggage tags with a disney friend on it. Ours were Red Mickey this cruise. If you DO NOT want to do express walk off just put the tags on your luggage with your name/address and put them in the hall when you go to dinner. If you DO want to do express walk off keep your bags in your room during your final dinner. Then in the morning take you and your bags to the atrium around 7ish and get in line. As soon as the ship clears in Vancouver they will let you walk off with your bags in tow as no one will help you. It's very clear where to go once off the ship. The whole walk off process takes about 10 minutes.

As far as jeans. Do it! Even on formal night if your nicest jeans are formal to you. Don't worry about what other people think is formal or whatever. This is YOUR CRUISE. We wore jeans or shorts to the main dining rooms whenever we felt like it. If it offends someone it's their problem not yours. Be comfortable. You paid for this. :)

Thanks so much for the awesome trip report! Your pictures are beautiful!

I'm super excited for August to get here now :thumbsup2

What a great trip report.:cheer2: We leave in 3 weeks and are super excited. Just a couple of questions for you. Not really Alaska questions at all. What is the Pluto Pajama Party? Our two previous cruises were Vancouver to LA repos. Is it normally held on a sea day?

Thank you

PS. We've docked twice in Vancouver and never had an issue doing the normal walk off. Once our tag character was called it took about 20 minutes to walk off, get our bags, clear customs and get a taxi. Maybe we just lucked in. The longest delay was the first trip at customs as my husband wasn't with us and they held me up in order to read the notarized note I had from him authorizing me to take our daughter on the cruise.

Thanks for sharing your trip, I have really enjoyed reading your report. I am super excited about our DCL Alaska cruise next year so I will be busy reading all the new trip reports!

I do have the Dream to look forward to in 4 weeks time.:)
