TIW price increase for DVC...

I spent the better part of the early football games this afternoon tabulating every restaurant that has a DVC discount, an AP discount or the TIW discount. Of course it depends on where you eat, but there is really no comparison on the number of restaurants that have a discount. TIW wins hands down. However, if you eat at the Swan and Dolphin, there are a number of places that do not have TIW but have DVC or AP. If you like the Rainforest, T-Rex, Yak and Yeti --- no TIW but DVC or AP ( it so happens they are all operated by the same company). The other big difference is beverages -- non-alcoholic and alcoholic. Some DVC/AP locations don't include any beverages in the discount. Also if you have a large group, TIW is better. It all comes with a price, and the 50% increase in TIW really got to me ---- that's why I put the list together. I'm sure I missed a few but the list helps compare them side-by-side.

If interested, send me an e-mail and I'll send it to you. It's in EXCEL -- as-is-where-is, no guarantees I got it all right. E-mail address is my screen name @ hotmail.

Ok I really think again like the APs they are attacking the locals on these price increases most of us who get the cards might need 2 trips or 1 trip with a big group to make this worth while. They are going after locals who use the card ps maybe weekly and maybe to free up some table space to the 1 timers. It does suck but lord when I travel with my family of 9 we hit that 750 in 3 meals lol. everything goes up all the time God flights from PHL to MCO are out of control sometimes 400 plus unless you want to leave at weird times.

This just stinks. For the past few years we have had AP's and TIW. We have definitely taken advantage of TIW and Disney has reaped the benefits with us spending more. We have eaten at more TS restaurants in the past two years than probably we did in the 10 years prior. I'm at the point that, even if the math would work out I won't renew. I will do QS more, be more frugal when and if I eat at TS, and my alcohol consumption will definitely change. It may not make any difference to WDW but to me it will be my little salute to Disney. To me it truly seems like they are trying to grab every freaking penny. Increase costs by 50%., add a couple dollars to parking (not that parking usually impacts me), add a 100 or more bucks to DVC AP's.

The TIW increase seems like they want to discourage low use of TIW and only attract large users. They probably will say a year from now usage is down so they will eliminate the program. I have written to DVC and WDW guest relations to voice my displeasure, not that it means anything. When my AP and TIW cards expire I intend to cut them up and mail them to Disney.

This is not the house that Walt built. This is a pale reflection. Walt built these parks as a place a family could go and play together at a reasonable price. Now it is the place where wealthy families can go and play together for an elite price.
So very sad...

Here is the famous Walt Disney quote about Disneyland being a family-friendly destination:

“The idea for Disneyland came about when my daughters were very young and Saturday was always Daddy’s day with the two daughters. So we’d start out and try to go someplace, you know, different things, and I’d take them to the merry-go-round and I took them different places and as I’d sit while they rode the merry-go-round and did all these things- sit on a bench, you know, eating peanuts- I felt that there should be something built where the parents and the children could have fun together. So that’s how Disneyland started. Well, it took many years… it was a period of maybe fifteen years developing. I started with many ideas, threw them away, started all over again. And eventually it evolved into what you see today at Disneyland. But it all started from a daddy with two daughters wondering where he could take them where he could have a little fun with them, too.”

Note it doesn't say anything about the park being "affordable to all" or "reasonably priced" (which is about as subjective a measure as you can get.) I'd challenge you to find a quote which implies that Walt ever believed the park should be financially accessible to all. Even before these price increases--or any other increases over the past 50+ years--there are millions of people in the US and billions around the world who cannot afford a Disney theme park vacation amongst their other necessary living expenses.

Walt was a businessman. He certainly strove to deliver a better park than the carnivals and amusement parks which were standard in his time, but he knew he'd have to charge accordingly.

The value of this card has been decreasing every year. Not only has the price gone up, but the list of restaurants that accept the card has been decreasing.

Disney are giving a clear signal that they don't want to offer discounted dining. Probably due to the improving economy they no longer need incentives to keep the restaurants full.

Jeez! Did they also take away the 13 month usage? I used to be able to get 2 trips out of it but if it expires one year from the date of purchase, it will run out since I seem to always go the same week every year (the kids' Spring Break).

I guess this settles it for me then for sure. No more TIW for us, it's just not worth it.

I've thought about the benefits of getting into DVC many times but this scenario is exactly what always scares us away. Disney seems to continue to disrespect the DVC Members - they eliminate benefits and raise costs. I feel bad for people that made the jump into DVC 5+ years ago and continue to see huge increases (above normalized inflation) to the cost of passes, dining, etc.

Don't get how Disney are showing disrespect to DVC owners. These changes impact everyone that visits Disney. I joined more than 5 years ago and remain very happy.

Not only have I had some great vacations If I sold my DVC points today I would make a very nice profit. No need to feel sorry for me.

It's time for my family make fewer visits per year and spend our points on the one-bedrooms or larger so we can make use of the kitchen. We'll go from one table service per day to a shorter trip to with only one maybe two table service meals.

Also, with the AP increase I'm looking at using Military tickets instead which means fewer park days = less money spent in parks. DVC pool time here we come. :-)

Hubby and I talked it over and we will not be getting another TIW. It will end up saving us a lot of money in the long run. We will probably do one "fancy meal" per visit, more counter service, cook in our room more and go off-site. Their are so many good choices off-site that we avoided because we wanted to take advantage of TIW. So it will all work out and I think we will save money. I will be keeping track, of course ;)

With so many guests staying in the 30,000 Disney hotel rooms & villas plus day guests at the theme parks, I suspect they've reached the point where each family only needs to do one or two nice meals per trip to fill the restaurants.

Almost exactly our plan, as well.
