Tired of snow and snow days

I live in the SE part of VA. We had snow late last night and this morning. Well, it wasn't crazy foot high snow, but we don't usually get snow except this year has been exceptional.
So, DD will have to make up yet another snow day. 1 snow make up day down, 2 to go. Because the school system didn' t put in snow days. We don't get snow much, but it could be hurricane day or power loss day.

I never understood this arguement? At least here in PA you have to go to school 180 days. So when a school builds in snow days, they add in extra days to the calendar. If there is a snow day that needs to be made up, the kids have school that day. If not, the kids have off. They do it to try and keep the school year ending on a set day and not having days tacked on to the end of the school year.

Most parents know not to plan vacations around the snow make up days because there is no guarantee that they will have off (this includes the spring break week because all but Good Friday are make up days). If a district doesn't add snow days in then the days are tacked onto the end of the year. Either way though (assuming the schools took the same snow days) the kids would be going the same amount of time and ending on the same day.

I can understand the frustration of having snow days and of havng the school schedule changed, but at least here it really doesn't matter. The kids will be in school for 180 days regardless and they will still finish at the same time. The difference comes on years when there is no snow. Schools with built in snow days will finish later in June because they had extra days off during the year. Schools who do not build in snow days will get out earlier in June because there are no snow days to tack onto the end of the year.

Our kids usually get out around June 15 or so. We also have 180 days. but our school system is wishy washy with the "snow day" built in. Sometimes we have it, never use it, kids get out early.

Then this year, we don't have it, but according to next years projected schedule, we have 2 built in days again.

We hardly get snow. But I don't think it should just be for snow.
My friend is a teacher up near the state capital. So far this year, they had a power outage and a few days closed for snow. However, no snow days built in.

In 2003, we used our 2 snow days with Hurricane Isabel and then 3 or so days had to still be made up because school was out for a week or so.

Another city is tacking on 20 extra minutes each day to make up for their snow days.

Our school system has all ready had 1 snow make up day, but hadn't announced the 2nd one and obviously with today, hasn't announced that one as well.

Looking at the calendar I have hanigng they missed one snow-make up day because it was a snow day. lol

We're in Fauquier county and they are doing the extra 20 minutes a day. It started this past Monday and goes to the end of the school year. The school board didn't want to take away spring break.

Our county is one of several in TN which can build in snow days - we build in 13 days per year by extending school a few minutes daily. What stinks is that if 13 days aren't used, it's "too bad" for teachers (contracted for 180 school days) and students just go the extra time. Not an issue this year - we used day #13 yesterday!

The State of Maryland is allowing counties to apply for a waiver of up to 5 snow days. I sure hope our county takes advantage of this.

For the proposed school year next year, we would get 1 inclement weather day.

On the local news just now, the city of Suffok was closed today announced they will be making up their snow day on Saturday. A whopping couple days notice.

I think we're up to 11 snow days. We've had snow cover since the first week in December. Still here. As of today we have 12 inches left since it finally got above freezing. Some schools are going on Saturdays. Some are lengthening the days of make some of the days up.

I feel for all of you. Our district doesn't build in snow days, we have 188 student contact days no matter what, but then again, we have only had 1 snow day in 4 years-we have snow removal equipment vs built in snow days

I don't know how school systems will be able to force students to attend school on Saturdays. Kids have music lessons, church functions, etc.

What states do you live in that this is being done?

I live in Va. and it is a city not far from where I live that gave students notice that they are to report for a full day on Saturday for having to cancel school today.
