We are planning a trip to Disney with our soon to be toddler (DD will be almost 2 when we go). We are braving the parks during the Summer. Our first trip was during the Summer, and I swore I would never go back when it's hot, but Summer is the best time for us vacation-wise, so I am open for tips and suggestions.

I took my daughter a couple of times during the summer months when she was a toddler. The best tip I can give is to make sure the little one stays hydrated. I always had 2 sippy cups on hand, both filled with ice water, and single serve packs of Pedialyte. When one cup was emptied, I refilled at a CS location, and so on. Pedialyte didn't go into every drink, only one in the afternoon and solely as a preventative measure. We took breaks during the worst of the heat, sometimes back at our resort, but mostly ducking into an air conditioned show or TS lunch.

Get her one of those little misting fans. Use a stroller with a large canopy to block the sun. Go early, take a break when it gets really hot and go back at night.

Some people like to take an afternoon break, others do not. It is a hotly debated topic on these forums. Our family is a huge fan of the mid-afternoon break (even in winter). We leave around 2pm and come back around 6pm.

Agreed with the above. Cool clothes, fan, and misting fan is the best thing you could do.

I found that my daughter will drink more water when I give her a water bottle with the sports top. For some reason, she finds those more fun. So I plan to take some water bottles with those tops for our September trip.

For my boy:

Lower your expectations on what you will be doing (riding every ride, seeing all the characters, staying out all day, and so on). That way, every little thing you actually get to do will be a thrill.

Prep rides by viewing youtube stuff. The last thing you want to do is be in the nice cool stretching room at Haunted Mansion only to have you toddler scream bloody murder and have to leave. On the same note, identify places (ride/restaurants) that ARE cool for afternoon breaks

I'm not a RD person, but either do RD when it's cooler outside, or go at night/evening when it's cooler and risk throwing off sleep schedule for coolness sake. You will have to put him back to schedule when you get home anyway. :rolleyes2

Hydrate and take lots of pee/diaper breaks. I like/don't like cloth diapers. Reason why I like them -- they prevent wet plastic butt rashes and save the planet. Reason I don't like them - you have to wash or at least rinse them at the hotel. It's easy enough to do, but its a total PITA to do it. Again, pick your poison, but remember to bring diaper rash cream, change diaper frequently, and take care of your toddler's butt. Diaper rash is no joke!

Lather sunscreen on you LO. The sun down here is no joke, and your LO needs a stroller with a LOT of shade (not the crappy shades that cheaper strollers have.) Also a linen blanket to hang over the stroller if needed to for extra shade, and a plastic rain shade. It has been raining every day today - hardcore thunder/lightning rain.

Get a hat for munchkin. With a brim. Get sunglasses. Practice wearing them, it took a while for our son to understand how to use them.
Bring a rash guard for swimming. Sunscreen them up and take breaks from swimming b/c the sun can burn you and you don't even know it when you are swimming.

Stay in or at least be aware that the hottest times are between 11-3.

Sunscreen.

Hydrate lots

If you have a car/renting one, buy a sunshade for the windshield and use it!! That will cut the heat in 1/2 for your car. Also, bring a blanket or something to put over your baby's carseat because the metal on the buckles can heat up and hurt your baby. One other car tip, misting some water on your a/c vents helps the car cool quicker. Or something like that. It works - try it.

Check out best bottoms diapers for kids if you are going to cloth diaper. They are great for traveling. Don't forget to buy a wet bag from them either. Wet bags are very useful no matter what.

Think about a Character meal instead of M&G. Paying to meet characters and eating seems to be a hot topic, but I find it useful with a toddler because the characters come to you, they are very patient with kids, you can control the situation, you are in a cool place and you get to EAT! And if your toddler is picky, there are lots of choices. And he's free!! Win/win.

Hope that helps. Staying out of the sun is the most important thing though. And using plenty of sunscreen is important.

And did I mention sunscreen?:cool1:;)

Bring or rent a good stroller with a huge canopy and rain cover. A good recline helps too if they'll nap in the stroller. Bring a stroller fan and extra batteries - only water fans are sold at WDW. Don't plan on going park commando. I don't wake my kids up any earlier than they would normally - especially if they were up late the night before. And my biggest tip is to take a midday break! A nap in the AC and/or pool time does wonders. Have fun!

ETA: I forgot to mention making sure they're never hungry. Feed them meals and snacks as you normally would.

We made it in July this year with DS (2 almost 3). He is a really good water drinker so we kept his cup handy and he was good. We also rented a City Mini from Orlando Stroller rentals, which was great because it had a huge canopy. Try to find places for meal that are indoors with AC even quick service. We are not a mid-day break family as DS will nap in the stroller and that is when we can ride some big stuff or shop. Honestly, he was so excited by everything that the heat did not really phase him. Your LO may shock you in what they can tolerate at the happiest place on earth. We also hit the sunscreen pretty hard.

Honestly, we did best with half days with our twins (2.75 at time of our June trip). Since we were doing half days, the best days were am EMH (yes, I know those aren't usually recommended) or a pre-park opening breakfast.

We did the bus to MK, but driving to the other parks was much easier

We usually planned an ADR in the evening, but waking up from nap and going back to ADR was usually too much, so when we do it again next year, we will do mostly early half days or 3/4 days (leave by 2pm)-then go back to the resort and just chill (arcade, quick service for dinner, pool) OR have a few evenings where we just do pool/rest and then hit the park in the afternoon and maybe have dinner.

We did lots of water, hats, sunglasses, stroller with canopy and LOTS of sunscreen.

I would also recommend bringing a towel or two with you. Not only does it help if there's a brief shower, but also, the strollers can get hot when left out in the sun. You can't always find a shady spot and sometimes the CM would rearrange them while on a ride. So I'd lay the towel on the seat so that it wouldn't be scorching hot when we returned.

And I also recommend the misting fan. Helps with the heat..... and helps entertain when waiting in line, etc.
