Tipping?

I have a ? about tipping but, I want to first say I am not trying to start an argument about whether someone should or should not tip! Everyone has different views on how they should spend there money; and, each person is entitled to their own opinions. So please, no debates.

I choose to tip housekeeping but I am confused as to how this works when using DVC. For those, who do tip, Are you supposed to tip the person, who cleaned your room the day of your checking in and if so, do you give the tip to the cm's at check in to give to the individual who cleaned? Or do you just leave a tip for housekeeping on the day you check out, or both?

I can't remember how many days you have to stay in order to get the extra towels and TP, but I am assuming you leave a tip for them also.

I also have a question about tipping bell services. We are staying in 3 different resorts. Do we tip the bell person who takes our luggage and then tip the person who brings the luggage up to the room in our new hotel or is that the same person? ;)

Like you, I generally tip. For my normal 8 night stay, I tip housekeeping 3 times. The full cleaning day, trash and towel, and check out. Since the room is already cleaned when I check-in, I do not attempt to tip housekeeping upon check-in.

Is bell services taking your luggage from resort 1 to resort 2? If so, you would tip when they pick it up from your room and again when they deliver to your new room, they will be different people.

No debate, tipping is you giving someone else money. There are no rules, do what you want.

We tip at trash and towel, full cleaning day (if there 8 days or longer) and checkout. I also often tip the person who cleaned our room upon checkin. I find the name on the card in the bathroom and then look for that person in the hallway or call the housekeeping number and ask to have that person come to our room for their tip.
Regarding tipping for split stays: We have only done a couple of split stays and we always rent a car. So we tip bell services who take our stuff to our car and then bell services who bring our stuff to our new room. Each resort has its own bell staff.

I'm sure that you know this but for others, the people who unload your car do not work for Disney, either does the valets.

They unload the car and pass your luggage to Bell Services who then delivers to your room. The Bell Services union got Disney to agree that you must be present in your room to accept delivery, solely for the purpose of collecting tips.

DME deliveries do not require you to be in your room because Bell Services tips are paid by Disney internally for DME luggage.

We tip anyone who handles our luggage about $1 per bag (maybe throw in another dollar or two) and we try to handle our own bags as much as possible (except when using DME). We tip housekeeping one time and that is when we check out. I leave $10 on the counter...our trips have been shorter ones over the past 5 years. I also turn them away, or try to, on T&T day as we can re-use towels or I can wash them. Trash doesn't usually build up as we don't eat in our villa or spend a whole lot of time in there.

Yeh, I know. While I do believe in tipping, I dislike having to tip one person to unload the luggage and another person to bring the luggage to the room. I find it interesting that on departure Bell Services can bring the luggage out to our car but on arrival the "Bags" employees have to unload then hand it off to Bell Services, thus adding the extra tips. I guess I could split the tip between the two on arrival but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Bill my opinion does not change simply because Disney decides to add an extra step. The industry standard is to tip at the destination of the bag. In the end it should work out as bell services will get tipped on arrival and the valet on departure. It's really no different than the standard for valet parking where you tip on pick up but not drop off and it evens out.

I did not think about the name on the card. Great idea! Thanks to you and the others for the info. I am all set now.:)

Idon't know if that is 100% correct. Bell Services gets tipped when the luggage get delivered to the room and Bell Services gets tipped when Bell Services loads your car.

DVC lost free valet because Disney allowed Bell Services to stop unloading the car since they didn't receive many tips. Disney wanted to get out of the valet business due to liability exposure, now if you car gets damaged, Disney sends you to the contractor, the contractor tells you to prove that they caused the damage. Not getting tips for unloading the car caused them to cancel free valet because they in theory pay their people more.

The reality is that they are non-union and low paid.

It was my understanding that bell services didn't load the car but it doesn't change my guiding principles in this matter as stated otherwise. The reason free valet went away is the contract changed, we can only guess as to why but it's likely due to overall costs of which tipping is a part.

I have family members who are CMs. They have told me that all tips should be turned in for a CM only party at the end of the year.

When I tip the housekeeper, I simply leave the tip in the room on service days. I usually put a note on top of it that says, "TIP FOR THE HOUSEKEEPER - Thank You" and leave it in a prominant place.

I only tip for bags when I receive them. When we're checking out, I usually walk down with the bellman and the bags, so it's that person that I tip. I always tell them that I prefer to load the car myself.

The only exception to my last-person rule for tipping is when we're transferring resorts. In that case, I'll tip both the bellman who picks them up at the first resort and the one who delivers them at the new resort.

For bags, I generally tip about $2 per suitcase. I'll tip a little more for very big/heavy bags (like our Owner's Locker), and less for small cases or grocery bags. The poor SSR bellman who has to carry everything up and down the THV steps got considerably more.

Without commenting one way or the other on tipping housekeeping staff, it strikes me as odd that some people try to find the person who serviced the room before their arrival to tip them, and also leave a tip at checkout.

If everyone did this, then the crews at room change would always get tipped twice on every room turnover. Again, not saying that they shouldn't- housekeepers certainly work hard for their earnings. Just wondering how many people tip the waiter/busboy staff at a restaurant for having a clean table when they first arrive, and also tip him when they pay their food bill and leave for the night? That's why it strikes me as odd to tip a hotel cleaning crew on arrival.

I find it odd that they get tipped when their employer and union acknowledge that they do not work in a tipped position, but that's just me.

What's the tipping if anything when staying Club Level at Jambo on DVC points?

Assuming you mean in the club lounge- it's self serve. There is a waitstaff who clears plates occasionally (didn't seem to be all the time, and there was a receiving area to clear them ourselves.)

When the staff had cleared used plates for us, we left $5 on the table when we exited. When we got our own stuff and returned our own dishes, we didn't. Nothing standard or mandatory I suspect, it was just what "felt correct" to me.

I don't think they accept tips on Concierge level. And since they are not valet parkers, bell services or table service dining, no tipping is required.

So when you tip... Are you taking the bags to bell services and tipping them and when you receive the bags? Or are you calling for them to get the bags and tipping then and when you get them? Are you supposed to tip if you take the bags all the way down to bell services for resort transfer?

If they haul your bags, they should be tipped. If you just give them to them at Bell Services storage area (and you do all the hauling), no tip until they are delivered to your villa.
