And then Disney up up their price for cruising accordingly, and then you can complain that they raised the prices. I don't care either way myself, I just want to make sure that if they continue to pay the amount that they do, I will absolutely tip the recommended amount. Those people bust their butts.

You can look at it whichever way you want. The bottom line is DCL is taking advantage of third world countries to supply their labor force. That's a fact!!

WRONG..... I have talked to many cast members who feel fortunate to have the opportunity to provide better for their families back home. Nobody is being taking advantage of! They total understand how a customer service position works and how tipping plays into the realm of it.

it still comes down to what i or anyone else decides to tip is no one elses business. you may not feel its right but someone else may feel that it is. and as far as 'Is the happiness of Tinkertone's friend more important than that of the servers (or the families they are supporting with their tips)?' lets turn that around. is supporting the family of the server more important than my friend taking her daughters on the trip of a life time. the only trip they will probably have as a family? who am i to decide, who are you to decide? she was okay with it so, again, its no one else's business. she didn't say no to tipping, she gave what she could. if its not what the 'industry' says is proper, it was at least what she could do. i do not begrudge her the trip and shame on you if you do. she really did her best! i aplode her.

What you tend to forget is that these servers are people as well, with children and families of their own.

Again, a cruise is a luxury - it doesn't matter if it's a "once in a lifetime" opportunity - that really means nothing. There are a lot of things that could be called "once in a lifetime." These people are relying on their paychecks to feed their families, to house their families, and how dare people say that servers who do a good job and work hard don't deserve that? That some random family feels that it's OK to stiff someone because they want some luxury?

That's really sad. And no, not shame on me, or anyone who says the truth in this matter.

I REALLY can't believe I'm reading that. A trip, a cruise, a vacation, any of that, is STILL just a luxury, no matter if there are children involved or not.

I have to agree that taking this cruise is what I would consider a luxury, I personally would not plan a vacation if I had to count every nickle and dime that I was spending. I consider the tipping part of the price of the vacation, same as I would factor in the costs of gas getting to my destination or hotels along the way. I think it should all be considered in the cost of the trip and I am sorry but if adding in the tipping makes it impossible to do then I would stay at home and save more money until I could affort to do it all or I would choose a different vacation that is less expensive. And it floors me to read the comments about not being responsible for paying the wages of an employee, the truth of the matter is no matter where you patronize you are paying someone's wages its just that most places its factored into the price of what you are purchasing, its not left at your discretion as to how much to pay them. What concerns me most is reading about the folks not tipping at all, I could not face my servers and cabin steward day after day and accept their services knowing that I did not intend to compensate them at the end of the trip. How may people would be comfortabledoing this if you were required to tip at the beginning of the cruise and then have to look these people in the faces everyday knowing that they know you don't value their services.

Most of these people have a choice of making $5.00 per day working in the fields or working for a cruise line. That doesn't make it right!!

I've been cruising since the mid 70's (so obviously long before Disney started cruising). Tipping has always been a part of cruising. I learned from the very first cruise I booked that our servers and room steward made most of their money from tips. It had been that way for years and years. Over the years I've had some incredible service on my cruises (both Disney and otherwise) and felt that these people deserved the tips they got.

Of course there have been over the years a select few that didn't give over the top service but still served us. They got tipped as well but nothing extra and in one case as my DH Mark noted the server and asst. servers tips got switched because we felt the asst. server did most of the work.

Over the years I've seen cruising change and more and more people are now doing it and changing some of the customs. For example dress is much more casual. Will tipping change in the future? Who knows. For now DCL is following the tradition of many many cruise lines both past and present in hiring hard working crew members from all around the globe. These people are making the choice to be away from family and friends to make a better life for their family back homes.

I think those of us who have the ability to cruise, especially on DCL, should be thankful that this is something we can afford to do and that we don't have to work the hours and the jobs that these servers and stewards have to. So for me I will always tip something and in most cases based on the service I've gotten in the past it will be above the recommended amount because I've always gotten service that I felt was above and beyond.

I've budgeted for the tips just like I have the cruise fare, the airfare, drinks, pictures, excursions and everything else. If I couldn't afford the entire budget then I wouldn't do that cruise until I could or I would change to a different cruise or trip that I could.

Our servers were from scotland,jamacia,russia to name a few,bit of a generalisation with that one.

They have the min wage in scotland, dont patronize the servers, they have choices, to be on the cruise or not, our last server had been on the magic for 8 years.

sorry, guess you got this wrong. i don't care if you discuse it or not. have at it. just do not make the mistake of thinking your opinion is the only one. don't think yours is the right one because its yours. my friend made up her mind and felt comfortable with it. does NOT make her wrong. you may think so, others may think so, but not EVERYONE thinks so.
once again, personally, i don't care what you or others leave. i care about what i leave and if everyone worried about that and that alone, this topic would not always be an issue.
you can read from this that i tip, or that i do not tip, that i over tip or that i under tip. none of anyones bussiness but mine.......i don't feel the need to tell people.

We all have our viewpoints on what we should do, and can not convince anyone opposing that otherwise. Or at least that is what it seems.

This argument makes no sense. If Disney paid their employees more money, then the price of the cruise would go up and you would still be paying this money. I wish that Disney would just do what other cruise ships do and make the tips an absolute part of the cost of the cruise. You would pay $10 to $12 more per person, per day to cruise. Then we wouldn't be having these, sometimes, heated discussions. The employees on the ship, that work 70 hour weeks, for 6 months with no days off, deserve to make living wage.

I totally disagree. I sailed last year with NCL where the gratuity is a fixed amount added to your on-board account and , I feel the service was not that great and lacked the personal touch. Why ? Maybe because the servers had no incentive to go above and beyond. I am very comfortable with deciding on my own what the CM's deserve as a gratuity based on the service level we as a family received ( including the kids ) and , am happy to consider the guidelines DCL supplies.

But, the gratuity is not AUTOMATIC it must be earned just as in any other service industry. Should I receive terrible and rude service then it is my right to complain and show my displeasure by reducing and in extreme cases eliminating the gratuity for that person.
