WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOUR FRIENDS OR FAMILY REFUSE TO TIP?

my dbf wont tip, so i feel I have to cover him, this is our first trip to the usa and first every cruise, for 3 nights. i have 4 kids, 3 from a previous relationship, so have paid for the kids as well as covering their tips, now i may end up covering bf as well, and ive paid for all the disney theme parks, birthday and christmas presents, and have taken a £3000 loan , as well as savings , so will still be paying for another 18 mths after I cruise.

I dont earn much either - but feel they deserve something for the service, but im not sure that i have to tip the amount they say to tip per person. I thought id give a few dollars each time we get room service and then at the end was hopeing $50 would cover it, I am doing the FE, so have gifts for the cm's as well. but i feel like a criminal offering so little, but to be frank i rarely have $50 to spend on myself ! Disney should pay them more so we dont have to.

I don't do anything since I do not share a cabin or children with my friends.:rolleyes1 But, and I'm sorry if I am getting a little personal or Dr. Phil on you..but you did post it on a public board, if I'm paying for almost all the expenses including for the kids and my DBF is not contributing or barely, I have bigger issues than his not wanting to tip.

Also, I'm sorry but $50 will not cover it. :scared1: What about your servers in the dining room ? You say that you do not have $50 to spend on yourself yet you are spending thousands on this trip :confused3 that to me ( and I am a financial grad ) you possibly cannot afford.

Maybe if you cut back on other things like the FE, you may have more $$ available to tip according to the service you will receive.

Anyway, I hope your DBF contributes more to make your trip more affordable and that you have a great trip / cruise. OK Dr. Phil is signing off .:rotfl2:

No problem.:thumbsup2

By the way, I think this subject is getting to the point of being beaten to death.:surfweb:

Always has,always will be! :confused3
I usually stop myself posting on them, just cant resist!
previous poster, you will get lots of answers, but I would be uncomfterable if my friend did not tip,but I dont think you should tip for them.
I also think Dr Phils right.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Had to laugh. It really lightens things up EH??? ;)

Thought that this smilie would be more appropriate for your posts. ;)

Some of these posts really amaze me.
I'll be called a liar, but when I booked I HAD NO IDEA TIPS WERE EXPECTED!
When I budgeted I HAD NO IDEA TIPS WERE EXPECTED!
Other people I know who took a DCL cruise I HAD NO IDEA TIPS WERE EXPECTED until the last evening!
Fortunately I can afford to budget a few hundred more, but the people I know who saved for several years to get a cat 12 weren't able to give decent tips on the last night.

So to say people who budget based on what Disney's booking website says and go on their cruise that they have no business going is elitist.

I would bet that a lot of people who are saying 'if you can't afford to tip you don't deserve the trip' would sing a different tune if they didn't have the income they currently enjoy.

I will make OPTIONAL tip payments when I feel service warrants it, which is almost all the time. But I won't look down on people who don't know in advance and aren't prepared for tips or people who honestly can't afford the tips.

Oh - remember those people I know who saved several years for a cat 12? For a while the father thought it would never happen because prices were going up as fast as savings, but finally he found a cat 12 sale and jumped on it. He got lucky - if the sale didn't happen he would never have been able to go because he couldn't save fast enough to beat Disney's ever increasing fares.

My TA told me about the tips when I got my documents. I don't mind tipping. I budget for it. I won't look down to people who don't tip. Everyone has reasons they do or don't. :confused3 I don't think it is nice to say "if you can't tip don't cruise" but again everyone has the right to feel the way they do. I will admit I had not clue that I needed to tip for room service and felt like crap when I found out I should have. I really did think it was included when I did my final tipping. You better belive I will be tipping good for that cake every night this summer.:rotfl:

popcorn::

Ive never heard any poster call another poster a liar here, ever.
I didnt know tips were expected but not surprised when I found out.
Its funny my first cruise, i thought the service was good, the 2nd cruise the service really was amazing, the guy that done our room was so,so good and so was our head server!

Just to clarify the number of potential guests each server is responsible for on each cruise is one section, which usually consists of an 8-top, a 6-top and a 4-top table each seating (up to 18 people); which means that on a really good week IF everyone including kids and infants tips them on a 7 day cruise they could receive tips for 36 people.
Wholly shnikes! If everyone tipped the recommended amount, that's over 4 grand in a week! I'm sure not every tips and not everyone tips the recommended amount, but wow... Even if only 1/2 the people tipped 1/2 the recommended amount, that's still $1000 bucks for the week. Now, are tips taxed? I have no idea.

Before anyone thinks about ripping my face off, I have no problems with tipping, never have. I was just shocked when I played with the numbers a bit.

For a server it's $1008. per week if all 36 people tipped the recommended amount. 36 people x 7 days x $4. = $1008.

I don't know how taxing works since the ships are flagged in the Bahamas.

Oops. I need to edit my post. I used the total amount for 4 cruisers, as opposed to the suggested daily tip per person . No wonder my jaw dropped.

Using your figure for total possible (based on recommended amt), then figuring that 100% of cruisers won't tip, it's much more realistic.

It looks like, if cruisers tip fairly for hard work and good service, the tipped CMs have a chance at making a decent wage. BUT, they surely have to work their tails off for it. I am salaried, I know my wage and I don't work 70+ hours per week. I know I don't bust my butt as hard as most of these CMs. Looks like they earn it to me.

Also, remember these CMs are not working 40 hour weeks. Their hours vary from 60 - 70 per week.

How much is the tip per person per day for the server?

It is more than $4 per day.

We just pay what Disney says. I can not remember what it is right now...having a brain freeze! :)

Wow!! They make a thousand a week on tips plus free room and board and whatever DCL pays them. What a life!!!:yay: :yay: :yay:

According to http://cruisetip.tpkeller.com/

Dining Room Server--$4/day/per person
Assistant Server--$3/day/per person
Head Server--$1/day/per person
Stateroom Host/Hostess--$4/day/per person

The problem is that those amounts are not guaranteed. Granted, the crew has very limited living expenses--essentially their personal laundry and toiletries. However, for every one of us who tips the recommended amount or more, there is someone who doesn't tip or tips less than the suggestions.

We were on one cruise where the server (our favorite who we had sailed with several times) was upset because a group of 12 had stiffed both him and the assistant AND given them poor comments during the previous cruise. I can't imagine this guy giving anyone poor service...and if someone felt the service wasn't what they wanted, they should have notified the head server. Seems this was a college graduation gang and they went out of their way to make life difficult for the crew...

Bottom line, do you have to tip--no. Should you tip--that's up to you. My opinion is that you should and generously.

Too bad for those that get assigned as the servers of those that see no sense in tipping.........
