It sure does. I don't owe anyone an explanation on who I tip and who I don't tip.

I don't think you owe anyone anything. Just thought it would be nice to know what type of service you feel warrants a tip. I was simply trying to understand your point of view.

I love that we still have heated threads here, even on a happy Disney forum
I also have a "friend" who is the GM of a Ritz Carlton who says it's not etiquette as far as he's concerned, or his staff, and they don't expect it and HE doesn't do it when he travels. Perhaps that's just proof that we can all come up with sources to back up our own opinions, and these books that everyone keeps referring to are not the Holy Grail of How to Behave in a Hotel.
Once again, agree to disagree without making those of us that don't tip feel like yokels from Middle of Nowhere?
Oh and in case you were wondering, in Korea you don't tip anybody even servers. So maybe I should just travel to Korea!

The way I look at it is this: The mousekeeper is a person who is going to be in your room every day, amongst all your valuable stuff. He or she is the person who puts clean glasses in your room, and cleans the bathroom. I want to keep that person happy. Human nature being the way it is, that person could steal from you, or do a myriad of nasty things. Is it likely to happen? Maybe not. But for $5 per day, it is worth it for my peace of mind

We rent DVC most of the time, so generally it doesn't happen to me that often, since DVC only gets housekeeping once per week.

I should think that the real posibility of job lose and jail time would keep the housekeeper from stealing my stuff. Add to that a guest should use the provided safe for anything of value.



My take: Daily cleaning is included in the cost of the room. Housekeeping is NOT a position that should be tipped.

I'm always shocked by how many people that post saying they don't bother to put stuff in the safes. They just leave their computers and jewelry out in the open! I'm not that trusting.

While I don't think anyone should pay "protection money" you need to keep in mind that before a CM would be hauled off to jail for stealing, you would have to somehow prove you had the item in your room to begin with. Which is not that easy to do.

I was reading a thread a couple of weeks ago and was shocked at things people leave out, WAY too trusting! One person commented that they leave their laptop and iPad right on the table to charge while they were in the parks. We put all prescription meds and electronics in ours every time we leave the room.

I don't understand this logic. Housekeeping is a non-tipped position everywhere. It is not like servers where they can pay less than minimum wage because they are expected to get tips.

However, it is customary to leave a tip for housekeeping, and if you choose to do that elsewhere, you should do it at Disney too.

I am not going to tell you that you need to tip someone, that is up to each individual, but don't hide behind a flimsy excuse.

As I have said before, I don't usually tip housekeeping at any hotel, UNLESS, I call and make a specific request for something additional to be brought to our room, such as extra towels, pillows, a blanket...etc.

I have no idea if housekeeping at other hotels are non-tipped positions or not, I was just saying that I had read that it was not at Disney.

I can say that none of my tips in any hotel (WDW or other) has ever been returned.

I've never been told by anyone at the WDW hotels to not leave a tip as well.

On our last visit to CBR, someone broke into our room while we were having dinner in the food court and stole our camera (with 50% of our vacation pictures on it), our camera bag, cash (not a lot, just about $60 left on the table), and my husband's FTW Disney watch.

We now use the safe in every hotel we use.

That's awful!
We've had the instance of our door not locking when we left at a DIsney resort. We had *no idea it wasn't working until about 1/2 way through our trip. You just never know when someone might gain access to your belongings. If that makes me paranoid, then so be it There are a *lot worse things I could be

I don't lock up my meds, but anything else of value goes in the safe. You can never be too careful. We usually put our wallets, checkbook, and keys, my iPod, and extra money in there. We don't usually take our laptops, but I will have my iPad this time. There is no way I am going to temp fate by leaving them out, anything that needs to be charged can be charged while we are in the room or sleeping.
