Tipping- How much and to whom

It may not be done, but the IRS still expects them to do it. Anyone who gets more than $20 in tips in a single month is expect to claim their tips on their taxes.

Oh I know I'm just saying since Disney views this as a no tipped position it would totally be up to the honesty of the housekeeper. Which is why I said I doubt it gets done.

I never said it was a "Dis" thing. I said I had never heard of it until I became a member of this board and started reading about people that tipped housekeeping at hotels.

I've never heard of NOT tipping housekeeping until here on the Dis! Even as a kid I remember my father leaving money for housekeeping when we vacationed in hotels.

Sorry, apparently I'm confused too, I mis-interpreted what you said; no harm, no foul.

Oh, I tipped them as well for a few trips, then I read something that was posted here by a CM about what a mousekeeper made and there was no way I was tipping after that.

:thumbsup2

I really don't understand the thumbs up??

Based on what a housekeeper makes - you don't tip? I know servers who make in excess of $100,000 a year - do you think they deserve a tip?

You can chose to tip or not tip - but one should not act like tipping is the strangest thing ever. Poster after poster have commented on how this practice has been in place for years. It is common knowledge if one is an experienced traveler - it is in travel guides, books, websites, etiquette books etc.

No, I no longer tip. Housekeepers make at *least minimum wage. I did tip when I was told it was what *everyone* at Disney did. That's just not true. Disney does not consider Housekeeping a tipped position. And as you can see from this thread alone, a lot of other people have said the same as I. And i'm quite sure like you and me, they have done some traveling too.

Ahh - I see. So you tip in all other hotels - as etiquette dictates (and AAA and travel experts, etc.), just not Disney since they consider it a non-tipped position?

Sorry!

I thought you were committing a faux pas. Glad to know that is not the case!

That's right I don't tip non tipped positions.

I tip well when it is a position that is paid to get tips.

I always ask and no one answers - Do you tip all the ride operators? the people who clean the bathrooms?-that certainly is a hard and non glamorous -, messy job. The parking lot CM's? They are all paid the same or less than the housekeepers. And if you don't how do you decide they aren't worth a tip and housekeeping is?

So you only tip people you are told to tip.

And to answer your question, I wouldn't tip a ride operator because they are not performing a personal service.

I used to work housekeeping (outside of Disney) and it is not a tipped job. They get paid extra, because it is an undesirable position. If someone decided to leave a tip, which was very rare, we did not have to report that as income, nor did we even have to let our manager know about it. I don't care what a travel book says. It is not a tipped position.

I posed this question to a friend of mine who is the GM of a large hotel. She told me it was very common for the housekeeping staff who cleaned rooms to receive tips from the guests.

Wow.....so they are earning minimum wage! I definitely wouldn't want to try and make ends meet on minimum wage.

I will continue to tip housekeeping because I want to. They work very hard cleaning up after other people and I want to reward them for that, whether it's a tipped position or not.

DH and I travel a lot, both for pleasure and work, and we tip housekeeping wherever we travel. If we brighten a housekeepers day by leaving a couple of dollars a day, it's worth it to us.

tipping housekeeping is certainly up to each individual...there is no right and wrong, just what you want to do.

But, what if accepting that tip costs them their job? How do you feel about that? Apparently, that is Disney policy.

A CM posted on the Dis some time ago that housekeepers make $10 to $12 an hour, far from minimum wage.

If it was costing them their jobs, they must have a high turnover rate as many people say they tip.

Definitely wouldn't want to cost them their jobs, but I don't think the 'this is not a tipped position' is the same as tips are not accepted.

I tip who I wish and suggest that others do the same. It's really that simple IMO.
