Timing of purchasing direct after resale

I am currently waiting on ROFR on a contract. I think I want to go ahead and buy a 125 point direct contract at AKV for the blue card. (I do already have FOMO of the blue card and over time we would save money with the discounted annual passes). Any disadvantage to just buying direct now and asking for the same use year? Will they be able to link both contracts under the same member number since we will be titling both the same way - or should we wait until this contract goes through first? An advantage to buying direct now would be to use the points for a trip this summer.

Just go ahead and buy. Once it is set up, and you have your new member #, you can then add it to all the paperwork for the resale contract. I always write it on the closing documents,

Once I know I have closed, I email MA and remind them to be sure it gets added to my current membership.

Since direct adds so quickly, it means you will indeed be able to use sooner for summer!

Your title company for the resale would need to know your membership number in order for the resale contract to be paired under the same membership as the direct contract. Both contracts much be titled the same and have the same UY.

The only problem I foresee is that if DVC takes the resale contract during ROFR or the owner does something to prevent the sale from going thru, you will have committed yourself to the UY on the direct contract. In which case, you will narrow your search for a resale contract to only those in your UY. Which, given that I have 7 resale contracts under one UY, is not something that I would consider to be a huge problem.

I’m in contract limbo right now because of buying direct before my gratuitous transfer was processed. It would be the same for you if your plan is to draw out the payments paying cash over 90 days. If you are getting Disney financing it probably won’t matter since it will close before the resale one.

Here’a the thread about my issue.

Hmm I think you should talk to your guide and ask if it would affect your resale paperwork in any way. I know my first resale was my first contract ever so it wasn’t a big deal, but this most recent resale the broker asked my membership # right off the back to make sure it’ll all be under 1 membership. If you like your resale uy then it’s not such a big issue but one of the above post is right that if your resale gets taken then you committed to that uy when you didn’t have to. Maybe wait at least until you know you pass ROFR? It’s pretty short wait right now and direct points are loaded like literally within hours. There’s definitely advantages to buying your resale first and then adding on direct.

I also think it could be beneficial to at least wait until you pass ROFR. You'll still have plenty of time to buy direct before you close on the resale purchase.

Thank you for all of your replies!!

It is good to know that I would have to have the direct contract paid in full prior to the other contract being added to the membership.

While the use year is "okay" for me (October) - I thought would work really well for a Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Spring break trip. It is not ideal for summer trips, which is when we often travel given the kids school schedules and free time. If my resale contract does not pass ROFR I may look for another use year.

I think I will wait till I hear back from ROFR before I purchase the direct contract.

MAKE SURE you get the current member price. I am not sure what that is but just double check you are getting that price and not paying more as a "new member".

Is there a current member discount for AKV currently? I think I would have to wait until final closure then to purchase instead of just passing ROFR?

I don’t see the rush on the direct. There are no APs for sale and the discount might or might not return. This is several thousand dollars on something that might not happen.

And your resale isn’t over. ROFR could happen, it’s happening a lot, or your sellers might refuse to respond to anyone or go back on the deal. It’s rare, but it happens.

This is a few weeks (hopefully) to get the resale closed. I would wait.

I don’t know anything about the financing. I wouldn’t buy if I had to finance because it can really change the math. Nothing wrong with Art of Animation.
