Philadelphia-based Comcast, a.k.a. the 800-pound gorilla of cable TV, is buying Time Warner Cable, who operates in/around NYC, L.A., Dallas, Ohio, NC, and a whole bunch of other places.

Details, here.

It has to get approved first. Let's hope that does not happen.

It most likely will happen (as the precedent has already been set), but that means Comcast will likely divest certain markets they could live without...

Even then, people in the divested areas may find themselves shifting to another provider, altogether, such as Charter Communications or Cox.

IMO, they're all pretty much the same - CATV companies charge big bucks for what I think is a ugly "digital" box that is anything but 21st century technology...

DH and I aren't happy about this. We use TWC for internet, and we concerned about having deal with data usage caps with Comcast.

We actually had Comcast before and had no issues with the service. Right now the TW cable box it a piece of **** take a good 30 seconds to switch to another channel and I have asked neighbors and they said the same thing. I have switched the box for a new one but it still happens.

Yep I heard this too and thought - oh no. Honestly we have so many issues with TWC here in NC that it might be what I need to push us over to Satellite again. I think they are have their issues, however. :confused3

I used to have comcast and their customer service is horrible. Plus they are more expensive for us bc they make us buy options we don't need or want just to get basic digital. We switched and couldn't be happier.

We don't have cable tv, but we have TWC for internet as it is the ONLY provider available where I live.

NOT HAPPY.

We are TWC....previously Newwave....previous Charter and previously heck something else I don't remember!

TWC has been "ok." For us Charter was the best. TWC phone customer service has been abysmal. The last time I called because our bill went up $20 the rep got really crappy with me and basically told me nothing he would do for me.

I went to the office with a good attitude and they dropped my bill over $30 per month no questions asked for same service. They will always give you the current "deal." ---which I don't think we should have to ask for.

I have no experience with Comcast and dread it as my email will change yet again.

Good time to make the break and cut cable all together. Cable TV days are numbered anyway. Why pay $100+ a month for a service that forces you to watch commercials? You also can't pick and choose when you want to watch a show. Very poor customer service to boot. The whole system will collapse in the next few years and go towards streaming content.

I have to do the same each year with Comcr@p, I mean Comcast. They stink!

For the last year, our TWC bill has gone up a few dollars every other month. We now pay $188 a month for HD TV cable with 1 box that does DVR (no extra movie channels) internet and phone. I think that is way too much. DH says soon it will be a thing of the past and no one will need cable anyway.

It doesn't matter if you cut cable TV, most of us still need internet.

If TWC is your ONLY provider, you are stuck using this new Comcast.

We do NOT have cable TV. We only have internet. We have ONE option, ONE.

I have had Comcast for years. The service has been consistently good and reliable. We currently pay $100 a month for high speed internet, cable TV, and unlimited phone calls. I really don't think that's terrible, but we are locked into a promo. I think about giving up cable, but I don't think I'd save much and we like it for the kids, Olympics, etc.

What do you get for $100?

What speed of internet?
How many Channels?
How many boxes?
Does this include DVR service?

Cable: I think 100 channels, no DVR, we have four TVs running, not HDTV though. No idea the speed of internet, but it's pretty fast since I work from home. Phone is long distance and local, plus WiFi access outside the home on XFinity hotspots.

I know Comcast gets a bad rap, and I get frustated with them sometimes, too. But in the Philly area, they are the main game, although Verizon Fios is here too some. But we just had the ice storm run through. We didn't lose our service and my Fios neighbors have been out for a week now.

We pay $110 a month for their basic internet, cable is about 200 channels on 1 tv with the big box and about 100 on each additional box (with $2/month rental on each box), full phone features. We also pay $7/month modem rental. But each year they move up from this promotional rate and we have to call to get it lowered. The last 2 years the "rate" has gone up $5 a month.

The thing is we are going to have to start paying more for the amount of bandwith with streaming so internet prices will soon take the place of cable prices anway. My town is contemplating somehow putting meter's on our houses so they can charge for internet like they do electric by usage.
