the tipping thread sticky is old and needs a fresh life

What info would be important to you? I am also looking to steal shamelessly from you!

Note: General tipping discussion and. Personal tipping habits will stay off the table. People are very passionate on this topic and it always turns ugly sadly

Post away folks and thank you in advance

Are mousekeepers actual "tipped employees"? I know the debate gets heated often about whether people do or don't, but do they make a regular wage or a lower wage like servers because tips are expected? Always wondered.....

Can the 18% "mandatory" tip be re-negotiated in case of poor service...?

you feel free to add text to the questions. And folks please feel free to add what you think is a great explanation.

I am hesitant to add too much other than dining tipping, but can be persuaded :)

keep em coming!

I think it's important for everyone to know that currently in Florida, people who work in tipped positions are paid $5.03/hour instead of the current minimum wage of $8.05/hour because the tips are actually included as part of their income. So many people I talk to don't realize this.

Here's some answers, delete if not allowed :)
I would be interested in knowing what are considered positions that accept tips at Disney.
Servers, bartenders, cocktail servers, room service and valet

I would like to know when tips are included. I know they are included in a few places, but I am not sure which ones.
tips are included at CRT, SOA, HDDR and MBYBBQ

I've always wondered if people tip on the before tax amount or total amount of check?
the server pays the tax so total

no, mousekeepers make a regular wage

only the manager can adjust auto gratuity

In general you tip on pre tax amount the old rule use to be double the tax... still a good starting point but depending on tax rate it may be less than what the expected norm these days. As far as mouse keeping... I can say with DVC renting or owning part of the annual dues IS for the actual payment of the room cleaning... and it is not cheap... For DVC it seems to the norm not to tip but a lot still do.. For other rooms it seems to be the norm to tip... However for both regular and DVC leaving a couple of dollars in general will get you some extra love in the room... extra soap, shampoo towel animals and the like at any hotel. With that said while it is said to the norm to tip it likely is not...

This is why I asked the question about calculating tip before or after taxes....people seem to have differing opinions. Anyone know which is correct?

To add to it...do you tip on amount including alcohol or without alcohol?

I'd like people to also know that if a tipped position does not earn enough in tips to be at the minimum wage, then their employer has to make up the difference. Tipped position or not, you are ALWAYS going to make AT LEAST minimum wage. I'd guess very few tipped positions have this issue.

"Correct" is to pay before tax. Yes, tip on alcohol. Everything other than taxes. That said, we generally tip on the total amount of the bill.

Not sure what the pp means when she said the server has to pay the tax?

I think some people get confused on the alcohol part as some resorts/cruises will add the "tip" right onto the bill when you get an alcoholic drink. I don't think anyplace I have had alcohol at Disney does this, but maybe it happened at the Poly Resort pool area? I could be wrong though.....

In addition to a new tipping sticky, what about a sticky re: adults/teens ordering from the kids' menu? This question seems to appear every other day & it might be nice to have a dedicated thread, especially when it comes to situations in which people were not allowed to do this.

The deal with alcohol and tax and tip amount is alcohol is not taxed so the method of doubling the tax, as a starting point, doesn't work right if you have a large alcohol amount on the bill.
If you have no alcohol doubling tax is a good general starting point.
But, really not an issue as I believe Disney receipts all provide a suggested tip amount, which would be based on the total of the bill.

Yes, this. I know it is still a very low wage but the law does require the employer to make up the difference if the hourly avg of the tip does not raise their pay to the minimum wage.

We generally look to see what our meal cost will be (approximately) using the DDP before going on a trip. We then have an envelope of cash that is divided out for each meal based up our earlier estimates (using online menus) We then get our DMB scanned and pay the tips in cash. We always throw in about 20% more into the envelope to accommodate for being off in the estimation and to reward great service outside of 20%.

That's why I love when they give you the little suggested tip box. DH said that when he figured it out last week at Olive Garden it was before tax amounts in their suggested tip amounts at the bottom of the reciept.
