Tilt Shift from the Christmas Parade

here is a website to convert your ordinary pictures into a tilt shift photo. Maybe not as good as an expensive tiltshift lens, but still fun to play with.

I think this is so cool, but I can't figure out why it looks like the subjects are miniature. Can someone give a very brief explanation?

Oh, and talk to me like I'm four....:thumbsup2

It is the narrow area of focus. There is a narrow, horizontal area that is in focus and the areas on top and bottom are way out of focus. This is playing an optical joke on your brain. You brain thinks that everything is miniaturized in the focused area.

that's how your eyes work.

Simple example. Hold two objects in you hand, bring the first object in front of your cheek, about 3cm away from your face. Hold the second object about 10cm in front of your eye and focus on that object.

The first object will be very blurred and also the background will be very blurred-- tilt-shift simply copies that effect.
