What is the best way to do Tijuana for a couple hours? We have a 7yr and 2 yr old so might just not bother? My son has been learning about Mexico for the last month in Grade 1 so it would be neat for him. He even has a Fiesta party tomorrow at school:)

If you want to teach your son about Mexico, Tijuana is not the place to do it. It is too tourist driven and is not a true feel of a normal Mexican town. It is a bit dangerous down there and you would be hard pressed to do it in a few hours. Sometimes the wait, just to get back across the border, is that long! Really, do yourself a favor and pass. I was born in San Diego and I would never take my grandkids down there. :sad2:

I didn't mind a short trip there-

We took the San Diego "trolly" lightrail system down and it was nice not having to worry about driving etc- We stayed maybe 2 hours tops and headed back

You can visit the Old Town San Diego area for some Mexico info. The Trolley into TJ is fine. Just stick to the main streets and you'll be good. If you are driving, consider continuing down to Rosarita instead of Tijuana. It is still nice and there seems to be less crime. If you are driving a rental car, many have restrictions on going into Mexico. For your own car, check to see if your insurance covers you in Mexico. If not, there are places right by the border to purchase a short term policy, and I believe AAA may still offer an inexpensive one-day policy. Enjoy!

With such young kids, Old Town San Diego might be the better choice - easier to enter and leave, plus authentic Mexican food. Has anyone seen the ladies making fresh tortillas? I liked that. Perhaps safer, too, than Tijuana.

Just got back from San Diego. EVERYONE we spoke to in SD told us not to take our kids across the border - 11 & 8. They said it is very dangerous and overall not a good experience for kids. As far as your car or a rental - we were told that people will deliberately "hit" you and then you have to deal with the mexican police. Not something you really want to deal with.

As far as Old Town San Diego - you will love it. Very nice, clean and informative. As far as Mexican food - Cafe de Bambini (I believe this is the correct name) is right in the heart of Old Town. Fantastic food and beware if you order a large vs. a small marquerita. You can literally fit your entire face in the mouth of the glass!!! Sit in the indoor/outdoor courtyard - lovely atmosphere.

The mexican restaurant in Old Town is Casa de Bandini. The liter margarita is huge.

I have one of those fish bowl margarita glasses and use it as a candy dish. ;)
