Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

You got it! Thanks for the Coupon tip. :woohoo:
Also is optional but if you have some saran wrap to cover your work area or to wrap your shirts. grocerie store plastic bags to put the shirts in, the have to be moist, rubber gloves, you don't want dye on your hands, my DH called me Shrek (spelling?) because my glove had a hole and my hands turned green :rotfl: you can use the gloves from the kit if you like.

Thanks Roxy! I went to Michael's today and they were out of a bunch of the kits, so I just used my 50% off coupon to pick up some soda ash and will check back later in the week. But I think I saw gloves in some of the kits, which I hadn't thought of!

I'm also having a tough time finding T-shirts (I guess because of back-to-school ??) so I guess my little project will have to be delayed a bit, lol. And thanks for your email too! :cheer2:

You're welcome! I noticed that too, most of the stores are running out of tees, maybe because is end of the season and they need room for the fall, but you can order tees online if you want.

Hi everyone. My first attempt was great. I used the Jaquard dyes. My shirt didn't have enough green for the kids, so I went to Walmart and all they had was RIT. I bought orange and green and red. They look dingy and grainy and the green was more greyish. I won't try with RIT again. Remade them with the tulip individual bottles and the colors are great. I just used a combo of Jaquared basic yellow, fushia, blue kit, and indivual bottles of green and black. The shirts look great. I helped as my two DS and DH dyed their own. I only helped put dye in creases.

Friday, being 9-11, our school has patriotic day so my sons made red white and blue spiral shirts to wear that day.

I put vinegar in the washer when I washed the shirts. Do I need to do anything else to set the colors in? Will they fade onto other clothes when I wash them or if they are worn outside in the rain?

I will try to post the pics of them. Does anyone know if the Kodak easyshare website works to download? :confused3

Don't know if I showed ya'll the adult halloween i made, I loved they way it tourned out.

Hi there -

I made shirts for 8 of us in March from your directions and they turned out great. Thanks!!

I am now making some for Halloween and love the halloween ones you have made.

How do I get the blacklines in among the orange and yellow?

I saw your explaination a few pages back about placing the blak in the folded area, can you show me on one of the direction photos of where to put it exatly in relation to where I am putting the orange and yellow?

Thank you so much for your direction and advice.

Jamie

Awesome! :woohoo: Glad to hear that.
About the washing, you should wash them separate from other clothes, at least the first few washes, you will see some dye in the water. It it rains you might get some dye only if they are new, after the first washes it would be fine.
Don't let me sit wet in the washing machine for long, or put wet clothes on top of them.
I think you can link the kodak pics here.

Hi Jamie, I didn't take pics when I was making the halloween ones :( sorry. But, you have your shirt folded like a bun, (like on the pics) and you put the colors like on the instructions and the black goes in between them, kind of stick the bottle in the folds and gently squirt the dye. Hope that helps.
I just tried different things on pieces of cloth, to see who they would turn, with tye dye you never know, the way you fold it, or the way you twist it etc.

Your welcome, anytime. Always use cold water, and low heat setting dry.

DH was at Home Depot - and said the pool PH down (soda ash) was $2 for a gallon or some big amount - I was thrilled to get it for $2 for 2 packets in the tulip box!! (just fyi for others)

I also had a hard time finding tshirts - I didnt try Targets clearance, nor Old Navy - JoAnn's said they were getting a new shipment in -

and like Pixie said there are some great websites to order from!

Yes, home depot, wal mart has the soda ash (SODIUM CARBONATE) and if you are making several shirts that would be better price.
Check the stores for the end of season sales, or check online. Jiffyshirts.com is one of them.

Have fun making ya'lls shirts :)

now I went to WalMart and I had to call dh to check google - I could only find the other PH - I know when I was in science class I learned about ph balance and bases etc - but know that Soda Ash raises the ph balance! so when you are reading the pool stuff - you want the one that raises ph balance and it says sodium carbonate - which is different then the arm and hammer sodium bicarbonate...

who knew I'd need the science to do tye dye!! *G

You are correct! Not sodium BIcarbonate. DH deals with swimming pools at his work sice forever, so when I mentioned the soda ash he knew right away what in the world I was talking about. :woohoo:

Thank you Sandy!

How long does the dye last in the bottles. On the directions that come with the box, its says they start breaking down after about 45 min. Do you continue to use yours or do you pour them out and start over? I had a good bit left over and hate to throw it out.

I know the tulip does that, and yes you have to throw it out or use it. Dharma I had used it after a couple of hours/day, but no longer than that.

After a PM from PIXIEDUST32 that boosted our spirits to give this Tie Dye a whirl here are pics of our first attempts......

GREAT shirts!! :thumbsup2

We also took the plunge and just did it - and I'm sure they are not going to come out!! DD did hers in only blue -

when I did the "cinnamon bun" roll - it just wasnt as easy as it looked, then putting rubber bands squashed it -

They are in a holding bag till tomorrow -

what happens if there is too much dye in those shirts - I unband, unroll then rinse, and rinse and rinse - then rinse a few more times!!

I'm not good at waiting!!

Has anyone did hoodies or just sweat shirts? We are going to Disney in January & I'd like something warm to wear.

OMG! :lmao: You'd read my mind, DH and I just got back from the mall and we saw some plain white hoddies, really cute, and you bet I got some  to try tomorrow, or maybe tonight :yay: I got one that is girly and another just regular hoddie style, I can't wait to see how they'll look.

:yay::yay::yay:
