Thank you for all the tips on here. I finished mine today and I am very happy with them. Not all the Mickey's came out great (thinking I should have used a darker color for them and had a tighter rubberband) but I just used a fabric pen to outline them and they did great. I used a glitter fabric pen (don't tell DH) and the green barely shows much glitter but just enough for DD and me.

PixieDust,
I went to Walmart and found the sodium carbonate, thread and a couple different Dylon dyes BUT they didn't have brown or anything that would mix to make it. Can you use RIT dye? I found liquid brown RIT but it says don't pour directly on material.
Also, I copied this from your photobucket ---SO CUTE-- how did you achieve this look? Thanks for helping this craft challenged DISer!
Thank you! I made that one for my DD, she likes brown and someone send me a pic (to have it made) of that shirt that i think tinker or TK not sure, made and I just copied it. My DD picked that cute shirt and we loved the way it tourned out. Anyway...
For that shirt I put the ears on the front and on the sleeve, and the white parts is where the rubber bands were, it was like a snake, then poured the dye directly on the shirt.
Hope that helps
About the dyes, I had never used dylon, I seen them next to the tulip dyes but I don't know if they're fabric reactive or how do they work. I think you have to boil the dyethat's why you can pour it directly on the fabric.
These are simply amazing. I'd love to make some, even though we don't have a trip planned any time soon but man it feels like it's over my head.
PixieDust, I am in love with your shirts! I just sent you an email with a couple questions. I'm going to try to make a shirt this week. Does this look like a complete list of stuff I need?
- T-shirts
- Silk thread
- Dye/dye kit
- Soda ash
- Rubber bands
- Plastic to make template
- Fabric pen
Am I missing anything? Also, wanted to make sure everyone knew Michael's had a coupon in this Sunday's paper - I think 50% off one item today and 40% off one item starting tomorrow.![]()

i finally found it! a mickey mouse clubhouse plate at the disney store. it was $5.50, but they had a sale 3 for $10. so of course, the kids got some goodies today, too!can't ever pass up a sale....
I already messed up!!
1 found ash - finding tshirts - 'nother story! decided now or never and dh went thru and found a pkg of never worn tshirts
so got a bucket filled with 1 gallon of water + 1 pkg of Soda Ash (found it at Michael's Tulip Brand same brand as the dye - the ash was $2 - enough for 2 tries or 2 - 1 gallon buckets of water...
came back to recheck thread - do I leave it overnight or 4 hours? Will it make a difference??
AAAAAaaack - I was supposed to mark the Mickey Heads, and tie them offf first!
Now my question - when you do get the shirts out of the ash water - do you dry them? towel dry?? Do you want the shirts to be 'wet' to absorb the dye or dry to absorb the dye?
1 mistake down - dozens to go!!![]()
