I ordered my shirts from Roxy last night:cool1: I can't wait to get them. Thanks Roxyparty: Your shirts are awsome:disrocks:

I have been lurking on this thread for a bit and was inspired to try my hand at tie dye thanks to PixieDust32 and her wonderful instructions. I figured I'd start slowly with just one shirt to make sure I got the Mickey head technique correct. The purple Mickey head looks a bit wonky in the photo as far as color, but it is a brilliant solid purple in person, it just doesn't photograph well I guess. I did this tank top for my daughter. I used a $4 OP top from Walmart and a Jacquard dye kit from AC Moore. Now I'm working on more shirts (as you can see in the background) since I saw how easy it is. Thanks again!

PixieDust32-I LOVE your Halloween and Christmas shirts-they look awesome!

Thank you for all the tips on here. I finished mine today and I am very happy with them. Not all the Mickey's came out great (thinking I should have used a darker color for them and had a tighter rubberband) but I just used a fabric pen to outline them and they did great. I used a glitter fabric pen (don't tell DH) and the green barely shows much glitter but just enough for DD and me.

PixieDust,
I went to Walmart and found the sodium carbonate, thread and a couple different Dylon dyes BUT they didn't have brown or anything that would mix to make it. Can you use RIT dye? I found liquid brown RIT but it says don't pour directly on material.

Also, I copied this from your photobucket ---SO CUTE-- how did you achieve this look? Thanks for helping this craft challenged DISer! :stir:

These are simply amazing. I'd love to make some, even though we don't have a trip planned any time soon but man it feels like it's over my head.

Thank you! I made that one for my DD, she likes brown and someone send me a pic (to have it made) of that shirt that i think tinker or TK not sure, made and I just copied it. My DD picked that cute shirt and we loved the way it tourned out. Anyway...

For that shirt I put the ears on the front and on the sleeve, and the white parts is where the rubber bands were, it was like a snake, then poured the dye directly on the shirt.
Hope that helps :)

About the dyes, I had never used dylon, I seen them next to the tulip dyes but I don't know if they're fabric reactive or how do they work. I think you have to boil the dye :confused3 that's why you can pour it directly on the fabric.

PixieDust, I am in love with your shirts! I just sent you an email with a couple questions. I'm going to try to make a shirt this week. Does this look like a complete list of stuff I need?

- T-shirts
- Silk thread
- Dye/dye kit
- Soda ash
- Rubber bands
- Plastic to make template
- Fabric pen

Am I missing anything? Also, wanted to make sure everyone knew Michael's had a coupon in this Sunday's paper - I think 50% off one item today and 40% off one item starting tomorrow. :yay:

I already messed up!!

1 found ash - finding tshirts - 'nother story! decided now or never and dh went thru and found a pkg of never worn tshirts :cool1:

so got a bucket filled with 1 gallon of water + 1 pkg of Soda Ash (found it at Michael's Tulip Brand same brand as the dye - the ash was $2 - enough for 2 tries or 2 - 1 gallon buckets of water...

came back to recheck thread - do I leave it overnight or 4 hours? Will it make a difference??

:scared1: AAAAAaaack - I was supposed to mark the Mickey Heads, and tie them offf first! :sad2:

Now my question - when you do get the shirts out of the ash water - do you dry them? towel dry?? Do you want the shirts to be 'wet' to absorb the dye or dry to absorb the dye?

1 mistake down - dozens to go!! :rotfl:

also for Michaels - when you use their 50% off newspaper coupon - you get another 50% off coupon from their register receipt!! :yay:

1st I went to michaels to look for tshirts (no white!) bought the soda ash with 50% off coupon... (I had 2 newspaper coupons, one Michael's flyer came in the junk mail!!)

2nd I went to JoAnn Fabrics with their 40% off newspaper coupon - they also didnt have white tshirts - but if I prepaid I could get 2 for $6 saved for me when they came on on Thurs.... ok why not.. and I had 3 colors of Tulip dye, but no yellow or red - so I used the 40% off for yellow.

3rd went back to Micahels to get the red dye with the 50% off coupon!

(fyi Michael's dye had more choices in the $9.99 3 pak but their single dye was $6.49! JoAnn only had 2 choices at our store - of the 3pak - lots of the $19 paks - but their single dye was only $4.99!!

Our JoAnn and Michael's are near each other - )

i finally found it! a mickey mouse clubhouse plate at the disney store. it was $5.50, but they had a sale 3 for $10. so of course, the kids got some goodies today, too!:rotfl: can't ever pass up a sale....

You got it! Thanks for the Coupon tip. :woohoo:
Also is optional but if you have some saran wrap to cover your work area or to wrap your shirts. grocerie store plastic bags to put the shirts in, the have to be moist, rubber gloves, you don't want dye on your hands, my DH called me Shrek (spelling?) because my glove had a hole and my hands turned green :rotfl: you can use the gloves from the kit if you like.

You're too funny :rotfl: don't worry we ALL make mistakes, and learn from them, trust me

Yes, you mark your mickey ears when the shirt are dry, tie the ears and then put them in the water.

You can do 30 minutes, one hour in the soda ash water, that would be fine. Then the shirts have to be wet but not dripping, wring the water with your hands, DO NOT RINSE THEM at this point yet, they need the soda ash to 'bond' with the dye.

Don't know if I showed ya'll the adult halloween i made, I loved they way it tourned out.
