You can bleach it, but it would also look nice with a different tone of blue.If you feel comfortable doing the bleach go for it, but be very careful, I would do it after washing it and drying it.

If you are planning on using the bleach and then dying the shirt again, you would need to wash the area, soak it on the soda ash water otherwise the color wouldn't stick on the fabric, it would look pink instead of red. When i did mine immerse I dyed the ears and the shirt at the same time, just like you have them but I dyed the ears as well, therefore depending on what are, you can just wash the ears and bleach it, but keep in mind that when the garment is wet it would bleed into the blue area.

Ah ... that's why I asked if I should do the Mickey first or last. I would have done Mickey first and then submerged the rest. Since my DH's leaked, I guess I'm glad the I waited.

Okie dokie. I will wash and dry them, beach them, wash and dry them and then dye them and wash and dry them again . Gotta get cracking since we leave at 6:00 am on Saturday .

Sorry I didn't explain myself. I do the immersion, let it sit for a while, then while the shirts still in the box I do the ears, I mean last because I start on the rest of the shirt first. IM sorry. You can still dye 'em like that.

What you can do is wash dye the other 2 right now, like that. Your hubby's shirt, pour some bleach on a small container, mix some water with the bleach, just a little bit bleach like a teaspoon and 1/3 tsp water (just to give you an idea) then dip a cotton ball and squezze the excess, then tap the area you want to bleach,give it a couple of minutes and you'll see the color vanish, then get a wet towel, not soaking dripping, just damp and with your hands squeeze so the bleach gets into the towel, then grab a dye towel/rag and hand dry it the same way. Makes sense?
Then stick the ears into the soda ash water for a little while, then wring the excess water with your hands and apply the dye.

Hi everyone! I'm back from a trip to WDW and we wore our t-shirts 3 times. We had a couple of people ask us where we got them and my DH proudly said they were hand made .

Here is a picture of my DD's t-shirt. Hers was the only one I dug out to photograph (with my lousy iPhone).

Just to refresh everyone's memory, I did a low water immersion method.

I tried to tie dye a photo studio backdrop once, but it was really difficult. Maybe with practice on some shirts I can try it again.

We are ready to make them but I noticed my kit doesnt have Soda Ash in it Is this something I have to buy seperate or is it only needed with some tye dye kits but not others? Also I have sewn the mickey's in and wondered how do i ensure that nice crisp outline around it?

You probably got the tulip kits,those have the soda ash in the dye and they directions are different, even with the tulip I had always used the soda ash soaking step,you can purchase a small package at your local michales or craft store.

The outline depends on how good you tie the rubber bands.

yep i got the tulip brand. So i should buy some soda ash or skip it. Will it make a big differance? I read PH up for the pool is the same thing figured id run up to the pool supply place to get some if its really important.

Yes its the same thing. Sodium Carbonate if you can get a small amount at the pool store or home deport that would be fine, I get mine at home depot but is a big jug because I use it a lot. I would recommended to use it because it, you would have a better results.Also for brighter colors with tulip don't fill the bottle all the way,do half or 3/4.

When I made them the outline didn't depend on the rubber bands, but on the sewing as a first step -- and then on the really effective use of a bleach pen! I definitely recommend using a bleach pen when you are finished to get a nice outline around the mickey heads.

ok looks like ill be headed to the store for bleach pens and the pool stuff. Any other tips for a first time dyer?

2 years ago i tried the iron ons. Mine were fine for one wear but when i washed then the ink on the iron on started washing away so i dont want that to happen to these.
