Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

You'll see some dye running on the first 2 or 3 washes,that is normal, just wash them separate,I sprinkle some salt into the water.

About the iron-on,the same happened to me with a shirt I made for DD,but not on others so I don't know why only on one.

I dont know if they are going to turn out ok =( I presoaked in the soda ash for 20 mins. took em out wrung out excess watter as best as i could and applied our dye/ They look rather messy to me. They are bundled and setting up. Is there anything else i can do? The shirts didnt seem to soak up as much dye as i expected

You did all the steps correctly, they should be fine. Now all you have to do is wait for 24 hours to see the result.

I went to the store and bought a kit!

Mine are soaking overnight at the moment. I have a feeling though that I'll have to use the bleach pen. When do I do this? Should I wash them and dry them first and then use it and wash them again.

I'm a little confused.

Yes, they really do look messy before they are done. I can't wait to see what they look like!

Well they are in the dryer/ there is a good amount of white in them but i think over all they turned out good. also the white looks dingy from the colors rinsing in the wash?


I have alot of mixed up dye left over. If i go buy some more shirts tomorrow and dye them do you think the dye will still be good?

Use the dye as soon as possible, it would fade with time.

After! After washing them drying them if your ears aren't well defined go ahead and use the pen, be very careful, practice on a piece of cloth first so you can see how hard to press etc. Also you would not notice the white right away, therefore I always practice on a piece of cloth first.

I have never done a tye-die shirts before. I clearly need to start from the beginning and catch up but I would love to ask you a couple quick questions first.

I have seen this before and I believe that you need to outline the shape with dental floss and the bleach pen is definitely something new but how did you ge the spiral on the rest of your shirts?

Also, what colors did you use? They are so beautiful and bright.

Yes you have to outline the ears, that is your first step, I have a small tutorial HERE the spiral is the result of how you fold/twist the shirt. The colors are the primary colors: Turquoise,yellow,fuchsia red, then you get the other colors when they meet.

How do you get such vibrant colors and for the white to "pop"? My white seems to get some of the color too--even if I leave a white section. Your great colors probably have to do with good dye I'm assuming?

I think is the dye, I use Dharma dye and also jacquard dye, is not super expensive, if you have an art store near you they probably have Jacquard products, their colors are bright and pretty, also another important thing I learned doing tie dye is to follow the color wheel, some colors do not look next to each other, I can't remember right now but just following the color wheel would make your colors pop.

I also use a syntrapol (sp?)detergent another jacquard product, it would remove all the un reactive dye leaving the white areas brighter.

Synthropol--LOL--with all of the Michael Jackson info I keep calling it Propofol!!! I did use it but I didn't have the nicer dyes so it was probably just a waste. We have three very nice craft stores locally but none of them carry dyes--just the Tulip kits. I'm going to have to break down and place an order with Dharma. Any color suggestions for brights? I'm going to Universal with a high school band this spring and I'm going to have some bright tie dyed shirts to take with me!

haha how funny, i know all those things have funny names. You can find them jacquard products in art stores, not regular craft stores but more like art supplies store, I found one here in metro Atlanta when I searched on google for the detergent and it took me to their web site there you can search by zip code. But dharma is great too.

Since you're going in the spring you can go with the primary colors, yellow, turquoise, fuschia red,then you can make other colors, green, lime green, orange,purple, unless you want to make the school colors, my son was in marching band as well, miss those fun days going on trips.
