When I stitch the mickey head onto the shirt, using floss, do I leave the floss in as I gather the head up? Then I squirt some dye on whatever color I want the Mickey head to be, and cover it up w/saran wrap/a baggie so other colors don't mix w/it.......right??
That's exactly it. You want to sew the Mickey head with the floss, and then gather up the floss so the Mickey head bunches up. You'll then dye it a different color, and cover it with saran so it doesn't leech onto the other parts of the shirt.
The ash everyone talks about.......if I soak the shirts in ash and water before dying them, do I dry them before squirting the color on them? If not, do I go ahead and stitch the outline on the shirt before soaking?
I stitched the outline on the shirts before I soaked them, gathered up the Mickey head. I can't remember if I banded it off at that point as well, but I'm almost positive I did.
I would then soak the shirts in the solution. When it was time to take them out, while they were still wet, I would twist them to form my spiral, band them together, and then go ahead and dye them while wet. I really think this helps the dye to soak in more because the shirt is saturated.
I'll be making the shirts for 2 DS's, DH, and myself....so I really don't want the pastel colors. The longer I leave the dye on, the bolder the color is, right?
thanks for your help!
You'll want to leave your dye on for at least 24 hours. And the boldest color you can get is dependent on your dye, and what type of shirt you're using. More pastel colors happened for me when I used a poly blend 50/50 shirt, whereas I got bright vibrant colors with 100% cotton shirts.
HTH!
