Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

When I stitch the mickey head onto the shirt, using floss, do I leave the floss in as I gather the head up? Then I squirt some dye on whatever color I want the Mickey head to be, and cover it up w/saran wrap/a baggie so other colors don't mix w/it.......right??

That's exactly it. You want to sew the Mickey head with the floss, and then gather up the floss so the Mickey head bunches up. You'll then dye it a different color, and cover it with saran so it doesn't leech onto the other parts of the shirt.

The ash everyone talks about.......if I soak the shirts in ash and water before dying them, do I dry them before squirting the color on them? If not, do I go ahead and stitch the outline on the shirt before soaking?

I stitched the outline on the shirts before I soaked them, gathered up the Mickey head. I can't remember if I banded it off at that point as well, but I'm almost positive I did.

I would then soak the shirts in the solution. When it was time to take them out, while they were still wet, I would twist them to form my spiral, band them together, and then go ahead and dye them while wet. I really think this helps the dye to soak in more because the shirt is saturated.

I'll be making the shirts for 2 DS's, DH, and myself....so I really don't want the pastel colors. The longer I leave the dye on, the bolder the color is, right?

thanks for your help!

You'll want to leave your dye on for at least 24 hours. And the boldest color you can get is dependent on your dye, and what type of shirt you're using. More pastel colors happened for me when I used a poly blend 50/50 shirt, whereas I got bright vibrant colors with 100% cotton shirts.

HTH! :goodvibes

Oh gosh, thank you so much!!

When do you take the floss out then??

When you get ready to rinse the shirt out- just carfully snip the floss with some small scissors, and gently pull the Mickey head open (dont pull to hard or you will get holes!)

Okay trying yet again to make those dang mickey heads.......Tink when you band the mickey head do you band on the mickey head or under it and how far under the pucker?:goodvibes

Pixie? You and tink do such great work... I'd love for mine to come out so nice~

You're welcome!

I see Tinker answered your next question. :goodvibes

I've got some shirts percolating, so to speak. It's my first set with the Dharma dyes, I am very, very excited to see how they come out. They won't be ready to rinse until tonight, so I probably won't have photos until tomorrow. :yay:

Thank you Tinker! I was looking at the Group Kit then adding a few extra colors since we each have different favorites.

PixieDust32, what colors did you use for the blue and green in your siggy?

Hi ! I used lime green and turquoise! Ahh and navy blue for the ears.

More pictures! I took the pictures outside to use the natural light and to show the real colors of the shirts.

The little shirt are soooooo cute! Loved making them.

I wanted to thank you all for sharing the directions and tips. My mom, friend and I did shirts last weekend. We had trouble with some of the colors running when we rinsed them out. We should have rinsed them when they were still bound up. My DH's shirt came out the best when we did that.

Thank you all!

Okay, so my first ever tie-dye is done! I did a total of 6 shirts (and my co-travelers did another 30 among all of them!). My results were so-so. Only got 2 that I really dislike and that might not get worn. Three are pretty good though they faded a LOT more than I expected in the wash. One I think is pretty awesome, but it was SOOO much better before it faded in the wash.

I would post pictures here but I have no idea how to do it! LOL.

Again, thanks for the instructions and all the tips! I couldn't have done it without you guys.

Congrats on getting the shirts done! Isn't it fun? :goodvibes

2 out of 6 that you don't like is not bad for your first try! :goodvibes You know what they say, practice makes perfect.

I must warn you, tie dye is an addiction.

Glad to hear that, share your pics whenever ya'll can. :woohoo:

Pixie, I just wanted to quote you so I'd remember to say I loved the vibrant colors of your last batch. And I agree with you, the kids shirts are so cute. I love working on the little shirts because they're so easy to saturate with dye, being so small. Lots of fun! :thumbsup2

Alright, I've got a round of shirts in right now, and I'm really excited to share them with you. I got some very interesting...sometimes unintentional...color combinations, so that was pretty cool. :thumbsup2

Thank you Tarzankat. You're right, the little ones are the so much fun, and they look so little and cute.

Something about when it's that miniature size, I don't know, it just gets me. :goodvibes

Okay, so photobucket won't work for me. :lmao:

Hopefully I can get them posted tomorrow, guys, sorry!
