Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Depending on what brand of Dye you bought is the amount of dye you'll use.

What kind of red did you get?

Again depending on the brand some do last for a couple of days after mixing.

You can mix just 2 or 1/2 oz to see how it works. You can mix the whole galon of soda ash, it will be fine.

I ordered the dyes, soda ash, and synthropol all from this page on Dick Blick.

I got the Bright Scarlet (028), Bright Green (097), and Jet Black (150). Looking at the description, it appears that it is Jacquard dye, and the color numbers match up to what I see on the Jacquard site.

Oh OK! Jacquard dyes are great too. Those are 1 teaspoon per 4oz of water, and yes since they're not mix with the soda ash like the tulip, they last longer, 3-4 days or so.

Scarlet gives you a pretty intense red, not pink-ish like the fuchsia red.

You can mix 4oz bottle or 8oz bottles, depending on how many t shirts are you making.
Try with your sample shirt first, if you want a more intense color add more dye, I had never try that black but with my black I add more than the instructions to get a really deep black.

Soda water can last as long as you want, so don't worry just stir the mixing if you let it sit for a while, same with the dye, always shake the bottles really good.

Just take your time and enjoy it.

Thank you SO MUCH. I had read that I night need to increase the proportions for the black to get it in a deep color. I had read that red can be the same way? Is that your experience?

I really appreciate the tips. I'll post pics when I get them done! Just waiting on the dye to arrive! :)

Yes, with all darker deep colors, the more dye the best result. They black would look gray, fadded :( not pretty at all.
Same with brown, red, etc... Just a little more, like if you mix 8 oz of black, instead of 2 teaspoons, add 3 or 2 /12.

UGHHH I am seriously going to give up!! I want to make red and green tye dye shirts with a black mickey for Christmas day at Disney. I failed misearbly the first time I tried doing a tye dye mickey shirt! I made 3 yesterday and while they look 10 times better they are not bright at all. There is a lot more white in them then I would like as well. Not only that but my Mickey head is not as defined as the ones on the post. You can tell its Mickey this time though so thats a plus LOL.

So what dye should I get? Also how close do you have to stitch?

I am so ready to hit up Etsy for some of these shirts but I will give it one more try.

Dharma Dyes are the best... ♥

OK guys.. Check out these backpacks I made... :lovestruc:banana:

PixieDust,

How do you get the wide band of white around your Mickey Heads? I know you use the bleach for the thin line. Is the wider line just from a lack of dye being applied there (is it covered with something?), rubber banding? or is that also bleached after dyeing?

Do you most often use the Dharma dyes or do you use other dyes too?

Thanks.

Michelle

Hi Michelle...

The white part is just from the bands, no bleach or any other product at all. Yes, all my dyes are dharma dyes. :)

Finished our tie dye shirts for MCMVP. I LOVE how they turned out, just as I had imagined. THANK YOU PIXIE for all of your help!!!

Loving these shirts and the backpacks!

Am now thinking of making pillowcases for my girls for our upcoming trip. Hate getting our pillows confused with resort pillows!

Will see if I can squeeze in the time between now and Christmas...:lmao:
