Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

My 2nd attempt was a SUCCESS!! Wahoo :cool1: I was amazed at how much nicer the jacquard colors were compared to the tulip kit. I will never use tulip dyes again they just look so dingy to me now.

I had to retouch a bit with a bleach pen and I had to add a bit of color using a fabric marker (I didn't have any dye saved) to one of the shirts but overall I am pleased and the kids can't wait to wear them next week.

Question....I did the bleach pen and it is dry can I wash them now?? I am so worried the bleach is going to ruin the shirt in the wash. I did wash the shirts once after I dyed them and let them air dry. Then I retouched with the bleach pen, let them air dry again and now I would love to wash them but I am too nervous to try.

Pixie your shirts are just awesome. How do you get such a tight spiral? I would love to see a picture of one of your shirts wrapped, and in the process of being dyed.

Terri

Thank you. I do have a couple pics on another thread somewhere here on the DIS.

Yes Terri, the Jacquard kit is way better. Your shirts are great, all you have to do is trace the line with the pen, you can wash them and they will be fine.

:thumbsup2

I actually squirted the bleach pen gel in a cup and used a toothpick to dab it on to make sure I didn't accidently squirt a bunch out.
So since they are dry now the bleach won't bleed and ruin any other part of the shirt??

Thanks so much for all your help.

that's a great idea, the toothpick! Yes, put a cardboard in between the shirt and after is dry you can wash it no problem. I normally hand trace it but if you think you can't hold your hand to follow the line, use the template again on top and trace it.

Just found this thread... and it is AWESOME!!! I wanted to make some shirts for MVMCP but DS16 was less than thrilled. I just showed him some of the pics and he said he'll actually wear it! Guess I know what I'm doing now! Can't wait to try it!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to all who have contributed to this thread!!! I did a set of seven shirts, and while I doubted myself all along the way, I was really pleased with how the shirts turned out. We got endless compliments at the park. I'll be doing these for each trip now! Thank you!!

(I will now attempt to post a pic. Ok, looks like I can only post a link. How do you all post the actual images?)

I am working on making some for our trip in a couple of weeks. What exactly is soda ash? Can you find it at craft stores?

I am working on making some for our trip in a couple of weeks. What exactly is soda ash? Can you find it at craft stores?

Soda ash is the active ingredient in washing soda. The chemical name for it is sodium carbonate, chemical formula Na2CO3. It is more basic, that is, less acidic, than sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), whose chemical formula is NaHCO3. The purpose of sodium carbonate is simply to increase pH.

Although you can buy washing soda in the grocery store, this is usually advised against, because some US brands in the past were known to contain optical brighteners, salt, and/or fragrances. However, Arm & Hammer brand "Super Washing Soda" does not now contain any additives, though you must use a larger quantrity due to its greater hydration level (see above). A better source is a swimming pool supplies store, or a hardware store that carries some pool supplies, which will carry pure sodium carbonate (a popular brand is pH Up), sold for the purpose of increasing the pH of pool water. This is typically cheaper than mail-ordering from a dye supplier, and just as good. Beware of suppliers that try to sell you sodium bicarbonate instead of sodium carbonate; bicarbonate is much less basic (it has a lower pH), and will not work for most dyeing recipes.

Soda ash changes the pH of the fiber-reactive dye and cellulose fiber so that the dye reacts with the fiber, making a permanent connection that holds the dye to the fiber. It actually activates the fiber molecules so that they can chemically attack the dye. (It can also be used with silk, but not other protein fibers such as wool.)

PixieDust,

Saw some of these at the Halloween 5K Fun Run this past weekend. They looked great! If these weren't your work, someone did a great job on them.

We didn't wear our tie-dyes this year, we put together different outfits. But, when you wear them as a group, they sure do stand out!!!

Needing to do another run sometime before January!

I'd never used floss.

OK, here is my latest crazy project. I silk screen printed the jack o lantern inside the mickey ears....

Here are some I made with Pixie's help. We wore them to MNSSHP 10/3 and had a lot of people comment on them. A lot asked where they could buy them!

We're (hopefully) going to be wearing red and green spiral with a black mickey head for MVMCP. I'll add bows to the girls' shirts to make them "minnies." I have purchased the Procion MX dyes in red, green and black...assuming that there will be directions on proportions and how to mix? I want to get a vibrant red and green so they are christmasy...not pink and mint! :) Have soda ash to presoak, have synthropol to wash afterward.

My question is this...
I want to do a sample or two before I do our "real shirts". If I mix the dyes in the little bottles to do the sample, will they be fine for 24 hours or so until I can see how the sample shirts turn out before I dye the real things? I don't want to waste a bunch of dye since I spent $30 to get the "good stuff!" What about the soda ash? Should only mix a bit of that to do the first shirt?

Thanks for the tips...this is a great thread...I only hope that my results turn out half as good!
