Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Okay, I'm feeling really dumb. I need some simple questions answered. The Mickey head did not turn out on the tie dye shirt that I made. I took a bleach pen and traced the outline of his head and then filled in the area with the bleach pen.
How do I know if the bleach pen is a gel pen? It doesn't really look like gel...more like a lotion consistency.
Do I just let it sit? And then wash?
Thanks for helping me salvage this shirt!

Just had to say THANKS for the great directions! We did our first attempt, learned a lot and had a GREAT time making these! Our Mickey's didn't quite get defined the way we wanted them to - and the bleach pens didn't quite take away as much of the dye as we wanted - BUT we love them anyway! We got SOOOOOO many comments and questions about our shirts as we wandered around DL. People kept wanting to know if we bought them or made them - then they wanted to know HOW to make them! We're already planning our next attempt :woohoo: THANK YOU!!

The gel pen says gel pen on it and when you apply it is gel, kinda like toothpaste.

Yes, let it react and then wash.

Does anyone know if there are dyes available to dye completely non cotton shirts?

There is dyes like RIT for other kind of fabrics, Im not very familiar with those :confused3 those are the ones you boil. The fiber reactive only reacts with natural fibers, like cotton, silk, bamboo, wool etc..

I made some more shirts. I used the Tulip kit and let the shirts sit almost 48 hours. The colors are much deeper. I think I will do this from now on. I need to make some modifications with the bleach pen. I'm going to test the procedure on an old junk shirt where Mickey, also didn't turn out.

One more question... I used a bleach pen and filled in the Mickey head like I said I was going to..but it didn't do much. I let it sit for about two hours before washing. How long do you normally let it sit for? Can I just use regular bleach, not in pen form?

(I guess that's two questions..oops):flower3:

yes you can use regular bleach, and it depends on how it reacts on the shirt, you will see.

Update. The bleach pen on my old shirt worked fine. Once I got the bleach covering the design I let it sit for 60 seconds. My line is not as fine as Pixie's, but it could be the ribbing of the fabric. Pixie, how do you get such a fine line? The spoon worked great, I thought it would smear. The key is a new bleach pen and mine said gel on the package. I had a bleach pen and tried this last year, it didn't work. That pen had been around for quite some time.

Here is the front my shirt. Should I try and outline the heads that aren't as defined? Or leave them as they appear?

I liked them they way they are, but you can try. I had done so many I guess is the practice ;) it took time and lots of Oopss!! so don't feel bad.

Pixie, could you tell me the exact name of the colors you used on the halloween shirts? Of course, I know orange and purple(lol), but is the other color Black or dark blue? Also, on the dharma website there are so many shades of black. Do you mind telling me which one you use? Thx:)
