does anyone know what the rules and restrictions are for upgrading passes at WDW.

Specifically I might be gifted some tickets purchased through a tour company. Will I be able to take these in and upgrade them to an annual pass. Also will the DVC purchase price still apply even though I am upgrading tickets?

You will get what the tour company paid Disney for the tickets not what the person or you paid (if that applies)
The only discount DVC gets is for an annual pass and I believe this needs to be purchsed directly from DVC I would call MS and check if they can or will do.
I know you can upgrade the tickets you are getting but you will pay the going price for what you want minus what Disnye was paid for the ticket you have.

DVC Annual Passes can be purchased at any Guest Services window at a park or DtD. You will need to present your membership card. As the previous poster said, for the "upgrade" you will get the price that was paid to Disney for the ticket by the tour company or wholesaler.

You do not need to purchase DVC discounted APs through the website or through Member Services.

There are even some admission tickets that can't even be used for upgrade since Disney treats them as if they have no value - so the answer will depend on the true nature of the specific passes you were gifted.

The DVC discount can be used along with upgrades and already noted can be done at any Guest Service office - located at every Theme Park and also at DD. There is no way to tell the value (if any) of the passes except at Guest Services.

Good luck!

Just posting to add that you can only turn in one pass for credit for each pass purchased.

i bought some tickets last year from ticketmania, I thought I would get a credit for the unused days towards an AP. Would I get what I actually paid or what ticketmania paid to disney? Thanks in advance

I posted to this thread earlier and my post is gone, oh well. Weird...

We bought 6-day hopper tickets from ticketmania last year. We used them for a couple of days and then decided to upgrade them to 10-day no expiry hoppers. We received credit for the full price of the original ticket (not the ticketmania discounted price) for each hopper.

This was a tip I learned on the boards. Use your ticket first, then upgrade. The recommendation was not to upgrade first, otherwise you would only get the price you paid.

I thought you could only upgrade while you are first using the ticket  ? In other words, you can upgrade to an AP or add days during your original visit. Or, if you have remaining days on your non-expiry ticket after your original visit, you can use those whenever, but they can't be applied to another ticket (or AP), say one month or one year from first use. Maybe I am totally wrong :confused3 .

But in any case, I would imagine that in upgrading to an AP, it would be good 1 year from your original first use date, not from when you decided to trade up.

As mentioned above, there are some types of tickets that can't be upgraded at all. These include any kind of complimentary tickets and maybe others. Hopefully the tickets from the tour company don't fall into that category.

We have a 10 day child park hopper that we bought from my sister because she forgot it when she went to Disney with her daughter and had to buy another when they got there last year. Now the daughter doesn't need to have TWO 10 day tickets so I thought I could take the original and update it to an adult ticket for my DH. It was purchased from one of the discount places online, like Ticket Mania. Will I be able to update the unused child ticket to an adult ticket for my DH without losing money on the ticket?

Your understanding is correct. It can only be done within the 14 days of first use with an expiring ticket and once the non expiring one has been used it cannot be upgraded. If you have a ticket that has never been used it can be used as credit against a new one.
