I read on another site that the public schools in Los Angeles will not have school on Thurs. the 13th and the parks will be crowded with kids. Is this correct? (I can't find the school closure info. online.)

Actually, SOME LA schools are out that day, but not all. Only one of the three tracks is out. None of the Orange County or Riverside schools look like they are out, and it is not a federal holiday of any sort, so I really don't think the crowd will be impacted all that much. Kids may be out but their parents will still be working!

Yes, AFAIK it's correct. The schools are out for a Jewish holiday (check your calendar). Many locals use it as a DLR day.

Techinically, it is called an "unassigned day" no referrence to the Jewish Holiday. Last year it was on October 2nd, which was a Monday, and so the parks were likely impacted slightly. This year being on a Thursday I don't think it will make enough of a difference for anyone to change their vacation plans over.

GREAT. I can't belive this is going to hit us AGAIN this year. :sad2: That's when we were there last year, and it the impact was HUGE. It was a whole lot less than fun (and that was our kid's very first day at DL!). It took us from about 9:45 until 1:00 p.m. to get from the hotel in Garden Grove to just inside the main gate. Wall to wall people, 2+ hour waits everywhere ... food lines chaotic and WAY too long with hungry children, completely miserable day. I am very surprised that DL didn't close the gates that day, as the lines backed all the way up to the entrace for CA. It was such a bad day that we extended our trip by one day to make up for lost time.

We planned our trip a month earlier this year in hopes of avoiding the same fiasco. I searched all over the internet trying to make sure there were no LA County holidays scheduled for our trip, and didn't see any listed a few weeks ago. Thursday 9/13 we are supposed to hit DL in the a.m. and drive home in the afternoon, maybe we will just make Wednesday our last DL day and drive home Thursday a.m. :confused3 At least we can be glad that there is no marathon or other special event during the dates we are there!

Yeah, but remember that was a Monday last year so it was easy for people to make a weekend out of it. This year it is on a Thursday and much less convenient so it should not be nearly as bad. Like I said, the kids might be out of school, but their parents are not off of work.

I have to wonder if there was not maybe something else going on that day/weekend as well that contributed to the crowd. Only half of the schools in that one district get the day off, and our local schools don't even get it, so it seems odd that there would be THAT many extra people there.

You know what, I think you are right about that. Now that I think about it, wasn't 10/2 the opening of the special Halloween event - reopening of Haunted Mansion? I seem to remember flocks of people swarming around that area. Although, it DID feel like 1/2 of L.A. was there :lmao:

Interesting info. Sounds like it won't be that big of a problem this year - I have already planned the day around it in case it has somewhat larger crowds.

I love these boards!

Well sort of. The actual opening day of Halloween was Sept 29th a Friday but it was that first weekend. Wasnt' it Gay Days?

Our Orange County school district has Sept 13 off as a Fall recess day. There will be families headed to DL if only to ride Nemo<G> during the week.

Which school district are you? You are a rareity for sure... 99%of Orange County will be in school.

I remember that Monday.. We went not knowing the everyone else had it off.... The security line was past world of disney so we walked around the DL hotel and found the fountain and Koi pond.
Our calender at school had it as a local release. As we found out Los Angeles has the 2nd largest jewish population outside of Israel.

We don't have any of those days off this year as we have a week at Thanksgiving.

Just in case any one cares, las vegas get off Friday oct 5th for satff development day and Oct. 26th for Nevada Day..........the 26th weekend will be packed in DL from Vegas!
