Thoughts on eating on a Hollywood studio day

Looking for any ideas I may not have thought of for where to eat when going to Hollywood Studios. No place that I really crave when there, so suggestions would be great. We will be checking in the morning we go to HS, so we are looking for CS either there or close by as not to waste too much time. We have plenty of ADRs later that week we are looking forward too. Thinking maybe I've overlooked something?:confused3

Without leaving the park- i think Backlot Express is probably the best of the bunch. I believe (although I have never done it) you can take the boats to boardwalk and do spoodles or something along those lines.

We were stuck for a place to eat at DHS one day, and just wanted something quick but who wants yet another burger or chicken strip meal? We were near ABC Commissary, but didn't really want to eat there given it's reputation. But we went in anyway, looked at the menu, and decided to try the cuban sandwich.

You know what? It was actually good! Both DW and I really enjoyed it.

So, if you're up for something a little different, you might want to give that a try. :)

We find the Backlot Express the most acceptible of the CS restaurants in the Studios.
We ate at the 50's Prime Time in October for a TS and we enjoyed it a lot.
The studios does not have the best food, in my opinion.
The boat to the Boardwalk is a 15 - 20 minute ride once the boat arrives. There are many options at the Boardwalk for TS meals, but I wouldn't waste the time.
I think the Backlot Express is a decent choice.

If it's just grownups, we really like the Brown Derby. The Cobb Salad is fantastic and the grapefruit cake is divine. We also like the Sci -Fi, but the food is just average... burgers and fries, and not the best ones on earth. Still, the atmosphere is fun and memorable and the milkshakes are great.
We honestly don't go there with the kids though. Our little ones can't handle the movie clips of the old monster movies.
With little kids, we love the Playhouse Disney character meal.. the kids get up and dance and it's so fun!!

oops- I just noticed that you said counter service.... I agree with another poster earlier. Eat before you arrive! Maybe eat a mickey bar to tide you over! There just are not ANY good walk-up meal options at the Studios! It's a bummer! We do the sit downs for a few extra dollars because it's worth it. The other parks have great counter service options, but not the studios!

We do not really like any CS establishments in HS...we usually do as suggested above...eat a good breakfast before we arrive, maybe have a snack while we are there and then eat a big dinner after we leave that afternoon/evening...IMO, HS and Epcot could really use more CS choices.

I can't personally vouch for it, but some people have reported getting a decent little lunch at Starring Rolls. I think they have a couple of sandwich options and of course, pastries for dessert (and I hear they also have the Brown Derby's Grapefruit Cake). Seating options are outside and limited though.

We cobbled together a "breakfast experience" there, so that's the extent of my experience with eating at Starring Rolls.

I had considered going all the way to the Beach Club's Marketplace to get lunch rather than eat a CS at the Studios, but it was looking like rain about the time we were ready for our meal and we ended up at the Backlot, like we usually do. :rolleyes1

Mama Melrose's was really good when we ate there last year. It's an Italian resturant but I ordered a steak and it was better than the ones I've had at Le Cellier.

I know it usually gets panned, but we have been pleased by ABC Comm. the last 2 trips.

It's hard because we've been to the world many times & know what we absolutely can't wait for. We've done 50's primetime, sci-fi, mama's...It's our first day of the trip & it's not a full day, so we didn't want to waste our time with a TS. Never eaten at backlot express. Read somewhere there is a fixin's bar which could make a regular burger alot better. Well, sounds like either that or eat at our hotel before the park, or MAYBE!! just fill myself up on my only favorite food item at HS...Peanutbutter & jelly milkshake:lovestruc from primetime. Nice lunch!!! Thanks for the input!

I say Brown Derby then snacks at The Writer's Stop, the cookies are right on par with the ones from Main Street Bakery!

Expect for the two times we tried 50's Prime Time Cafe for lunch, my family and I always went to the ABC Commissary for lunch and we have always enjoyed it. I happen to think it's a great place to relax while you eat and it has a nice atmosphere, so no matter what we will keep going back there even if it's not the most well liked cs location in WDW.

We always eat at ABC commisary for CS, you havea wide variety, and lots of seating, and very convient to many places.

No one has mentioned it yet, but my family loves Pizza Planet. I know, pizza is pizza, but it's the only pizza we had the whole time, and it was really good. Not to mention the kids got to play games, while the adults were able to relax and enjoy our food.

That sounds like a lovely time. I'm glad you didn't let the negative reviews keep you from trying it. Thank you for your post, letting those of us who haven't visited Pizza Planet know what's available there! :goodvibes

DW and I enjoyed the Starring Rolls Cafe. They have good sandwiches and a nice outdoor seating area. It is close to the entrance over to the right of the park information/ride update board.
