This mom is going way too far re: Nut Allergy

And yet another case of a mother/parent 'preparing the road for the child vs preparing the child for the road'!!!!
She had best give her child the info the child needs to live in this world...there are a lot of oak trees out there!!!!

She is worried the acorns could be used for bullying? Doesn't she realize that a kid could pick up acorns somewhere else, bring them to school and use them for bulllying if they wanted to?

I feel bad for her kids. They are in for a world of teasing at school due to this.

She told Vaughan's committee of the whole, "Many of the students unfortunately mistake the acorns for hazelnuts as they look similar.

If a tree nut allergic kid mistakes an acorn for a hazelnut then good, that means they won't pick it up and eat it ;)
I don't know what she as done as far as educating her child about the dangers of their tree nut allergy, but most of us have taught our children to avoid any tree nut or anything they don't know is a tree nut. My ds wouldn't put an acorn in his mouth BECAUSE he has a tree nut allergy. This woman is off her rocker.

Mom needs to get a grip.

I know I went to school in the dark ages but I don't remember any of this "nut allergy" stuff. How did we all survive?

My nephew is allergic to dairy, diagnosed as an infant. He was taught at a young age what to avoid and he is now a Senior in HS and has survived without intervention.

The woman sounds crazy. Honestly, if her kids can't be trusted not to pick up random nuts from the ground and eat them, she needs to be focusing on her failure to adequately teach them that and not on trying to get the trees removed.

And they are teen agers (according to an article in our paper - she's relatively local to me).

FayeW and kimblebee - I had the same thought.

Ummm...mom is going seriously overboard.

My daughter has a tree nut allergy and my yard is covered in acorns. She sometimes collects them in buckets.

That woman is off her rocker

Perhaps she should spend her time getting her children glasses so they can see they are acorns and feeding them so they aren't so hungry they eat an acorn!!

This is why people have said this nut free school stuff is a starting down slippery slope. We are really sliding now! and we aren't at the bottom yet.

What is even scarier and sadder is that this is even getting air time/media attention!! It never should have made the news or been published.

I unders the fear of parents for their children with potentially deadly allergies. I understand accomidating any and all with medical conditions, limitations etc.

What I do not understand and will never understand is the idea that such huge accomidations should be made for the very few. Lets cut down all the trees, pave over all the grass, outlaw all peanut products at schools, and basicly pad every hard surface with rubber to make it a safer world.

Come on people I feel for those with children with issues, but where does this end. My wife's scholl is giving detention to kids for bringing peanut butter sandwiches for lunch because 4 kids out of 800 are allergic to peanuts. Really 4 out of 800? Those 4 kids and their allergies are allowed to dictate the eating habits of 796 other kids?

Maybe if you took the kids into the woods when they were little they would have built a tolerence for tree nuts and they would not have the issues.

That mom is nuts (pun intended)!
The only way she could possibly have a reaction would be to eat the acorns, and since she hasn't shown any latent squirell-like tendencies, I don't think she'll be snacking on acorns.
This made me :rotfl2:

Sounds like mom has a little too much time on her hands and REALLY needs to just take a chill pill. I know allergies are serious but I think her request is a little extreme.

That mom needs to move to the dessert and homeschool!! How embarrassing for the kids. They will never hear the end of this.

The mother sounds like an attention seeker to me. She must know that her children are not going to eat the acorns but only cares about being in the news.

I have an anaphalactic tree nut allergy and would never consider having oak trees removed. I just don't eat tree nuts (and you would be surprised how much that limits choices.)

Now, I would love to see all wax leaf ligustrums cut down -- their pollen makes me miserable for a few months. I am also allergic to elm and cedar pollen. (Living in the Texas hill country was FUN--not!) However, it is just something I live with.

I can understand how she wants to protect her child, but it is much better to educate him to avoid the allergen!

I am going to write my kids' school this minute and tell them to cut down all the trees esp birch bc DS9 is highly allergic to trees...I mean really!!!! People amaze me!

This would be like me petitioning to remove all fruits from the school because DD12 is allergic to pineapple.
We have a safe list of juice boxes and fruit cups and if it's not on the list she doesn't eat/drink it at school.

I think it actually would make more sense for someone to petition to ban a real food that kids might actual eat instead of an acorn that kids likely won't ever try to eat
