July 14 - Splash Mountain

dland2004map-wr.jpg

If you reference the map above, we've already walked Main Street USA, stopped at the hub and the
Tiny Castle, then headed left to Adventureland and New Orleans Square. We are now heading to the farthest
left
and entering into Critter Country for the next two days: home of Splash Mountain and Winnie the Pooh.

SPLASH MOUNTAIN. Aka: the one where you get wet.
hqdefault.jpg

Caution: You will get wet. Very very very wet. No... really. This is a water ride. With Water.
Splash Mountain is literally next door to the Haunted Mansion and is known as the "Mountain Ride with Water".

The ride launched in 1989 and is modeled with characters from the movie Song of the South, aka: the one that
Disney really doesn't like to talk about because of its blatant racism. The ride went so over budget that they
had to use the characters from the defunct America Sings attraction to decorate the end of the ride
during the "zip a dee do dah" song at the very end after the drop.

Disneyland's attraction leverages a 7-seat system where you ride 6 in single file with the last seat holding
space for an adult and a child. The ride takes quick turns through water and yes, you will get wet.

July 14 - Question of the Day
Let's talk about Splash Mountain and your experiences with the ride.

Have you done this ride at Disneyland and how wet did you get?
Most of us have ridden the MK version - so same question. How did it go and how wet did you get?
Have you taken a funny photo on the ride? If so, share it!

Bonus question: what is your Splash Mountain strategy to not get wet.

I have a love hate relationship with Splash Mountain. I Love the ride but hate the drop. The first year that we went my daughter was not tall enough to ride and I was fine with that. It gave me an excuse not to ride. The second trip I didn't have the excuse anymore. This trip I had to be brave for her or she wouldn't ride it. I sucked it up and went on. I am notorious for chickening out at the last minute with any roller coaster/big drop rides and I didn't this time. I have ridden it 3 times now and I just can't get like that drop. My daughter and I always sit together. We both always have our heads down and our eyes are closed tightly for the picture. My husband and son do much better with the picture.

We tend to go when the heat is at it's hottest in Florida. We just went in June and before that we went in Labor Day week in September. We do not mind getting wet. However we never seem to come off of this ride that wet. We are wet enough to cool off but not too bad where we are wet for very long.

Oh man-- I have a love/hate relationship with Splash.

I LOVE it because I love the Brer Rabbit stories the ride is based on. My mom had one of original Disney books from like the 60's, and I was read those Brer Rabbit stories as a kid. I've also seen a newer (non-Disney) movie that tells the Brer Rabbit stories without the dialect and without the plot of the real people (which I believe were the controversial parts of SotS). It was on Netflix recently. Anyway, those stories cracked me up as a kid--- I loved how he could always outwit Brer Fox and Brer Bear. So when I went to Disney the first time, I HAD to ride Splash even though I didn't "do" big rides. So it has that nostalgia for me as my first "big" ride and I looooooved the characters.

I also hate it because now that I am getting older, those drops do me in! I hate that feeling in my stomach!!! But I do the ride anyway. The one in California freaked me out though because there is no lap bar and they send you down that thing with just handles to hold onto!

The one in Tokyo now holds a special place in my heart as well-- I love to tell this to people when they ask me what's the big deal about Tokyo vs WDW or DL. As you are boarding the ride, there is someone with a dry towel wiping off the seats so you don't get a soggy bottom when you sit down. That right there just sums up the level of the Disney difference in Tokyo. Haha!

As for getting wet, I usually don't mind at WDW-- it's always so hot and we don't ride in the cooler months. In Tokyo, it's not as severe as the US counterparts. We hardly got wet but we wore ponchos just in case. It was a little chilly when we were there. Disneyland is a whole other beast though. I saw people coming of of that one SOAKED! So I just bundled up in my raincoat and hoped for the best. Which was bad but not awful!

Ok, ramble over :)

My woohoo Wednesday is that today is my very LAST Wednesday of work! My last day is Friday:) I guess you could say that I am retiring. I've been there 21 years. Going to stay home and help DH with businesses and kids:) Very excited!

Congrats on maybe retiring. It will be a good feeling.

I have ridden Splash Mountain. Dh and boys had ridden it and I didn't because of the drop. I decided to try it and I was taking pictures like crazy because I felt that I would probably never ride it again. I still hate the drop but I love the ride and the drop has gotten easier. In DW if you are the back you don't get as wet. DW has 8 seats with 4 rows of 2. They are pretty strict about only having 8 people. We went once with my sister and her family and another sister. There were 9 of us. They did allow us to ride all together. Dh sat with my younger son and my younger niece. Both very lightweights. The picture was great the kids were throwing their hands up in the air and dh was grabbing on to them for fear of them bouncing out of the log. I think we bought 4 of those pictures and gave one to my mother and father as a souvenir.

I need to have a non Wed WOOHOO moment. I went for a blood pressure check with my doctor today. My bp has been fine at home but it is always up there since they never shut up long enough for me to get super calm. It wasn't bad today so she let me go. The exciting part of this is that since the beginning of Feb I have lost 15 pounds. According to my dr's scale it was 18 pounds and according to my scale it was 13 pounds so I am taking the halfway mark and going with 15. This the first time in ages that I have gone to the dr's office and actually weighed less than the last visit. Thanks everyone for the inspiration.

Now the bad part. We think I have a stress fracture in my foot along with a sprained ankle. I walked at the zoo the other day and yesterday I woke up and my foot was in a lot of pain. I had a couple of xrays done this morning and am waiting the results.

Have a happy and healthy day everyone.

Have you done this ride at Disneyland and how wet did you get?

Okay. Here's another one we've never done at DL, but we have a good excuse this time.
I don't know if I've mentioned it, but on our last trip to DL my sister was in a walking boot. She had broken her foot a few weeks earlier, and she actually started wearing the boot the night before we left. We wanted to go on Splash Mountain, especially because the line was short (I think 5-10 minutes), but my sister was really worried about getting the boot wet (especially because it had gotten wet in the rain the day before and it took a long time to dry off). So we skipped it.
(Our first trip we skipped it because the lines were too long and it was rainy)

Most of us have ridden the MK version - so same question. How did it go and how wet did you get?

We did it for the first time in January. I'm still not sure I've dried off fully. I knew it would be wet, but nobody warned me that it would be that wet!
Other than the wet ... I enjoyed it. I was just kinda wondering when the drop would be the whole time, so I don't think I fully appreciated it ... I definitely need to do it again, just maybe I'll wear a poncho next time.

I have never ridden the ride at WDW and probably never will. And I refuse to ride Splash Mountain ever again. I hate it.

After those traumatic experiences ... I'm not surprised that you refuse to ride it!

I need to have a non Wed WOOHOO moment. I went for a blood pressure check with my doctor today. Congrats on being down at the doctor's office - that's always an awesome feeling!

Oh no! I hope everything ends up being okay!

I've missed a few days, but it looks like I'm not the only one. I've been obsessively planning our November trip. We're staying at CSR. I was able to get Free Dining for the last 4 days of our stay and my mom had a PIN code for 30% off the rooms, which I was able to use for our first 3 days, so yay!

I have done my 10,000 steps every day this month. So I'm at 100%. I've been trying to get what I can during the day and then at night I either walk outside (it's so hot though) or on the treadmill. Even when I don't want to! Last night my 9 year old and my 7 year old wanted to walk, so they took turns and we did the big block twice. It's about 2,000 steps around it, so I was really tired and hot by the end. But it's fun having 1 on 1 time with those goofy girls. They swim as a sport, so they are very fit, but I think it's good for them to get in some good walking before our trip. I'm going to make a point to get them up to a few miles if I can.

Holidays... Halloween is usually problematic for me. Our neighborhood is "the place to be" in our small town, so we get several hundred trick-or-treaters. We usually run out of candy and give some of what my kids collected away, but there's still a lot of candy here for at least a month. I try to limit myself to 1 serving a day and I find that if I put it up, out of sight, I'm better about staying out of it. We get back from Disney the Sunday before Thanksgiving, so I think we might just have a small family meal. I'm not up for hosting anyone. Christmas is more difficult because it seems to go on forever. Hopefully I can have many good habits by then, so a few mess ups won't matter quite so much.

I like Splash Mountain a lot, we usually go to WDW in the winter, so we've never gotten very wet. We did Tom Sawyer Island last time and the kids had a blast. I need to make sure that's on our list for this trip. It's a nice place to get away from the craziness, a little.

So here's my Splash Mountain story. As I've mentioned a couple times, I've taken my Niece and Nephews each on a 'time with Auntie' trip when they were in the 11/13 years old range. Pre-trip they each got The WDW for Kids book and I told them to pick out the top three things they wanted to do in each park, and we'd be sure and do those things first. One of the things Nephew1 chose was Splash Mountain. First day there we had the park channel on the tv and the bit for SM came on... 45 degree drop at 90 miles and hour. His eyes bugged out. We went to MK several times and he kept coming up with excuses not to go on it: the wait is too long, I'm wearing my good shorts and don't want to get wet... Finally the last day we were coming at it from the train stop, so kind of from behind, and I could see there was no line. So as we're walking and talking I stealthfully turned us in to the entrance, he's gabbing away oblivious to where we're going until we get to where the queue drops down and you can see the boats. Panic time, but he didn't want to look like a baby, so being the bad Auntie that I am, I was able to shove him in the boat. It was the most favorite thing he did all trip.

It's a boohoo Thursday for me - I think my Fitbit is done. Last night I was having a lot of trouble with it syncing with my phone, but finally got it. The battery was about 3/4 full. This morning the battery was all the way drained and after charging it this morning I haven't been able to sync it. Tried for the past two hours. Oh well, my wife asked me if I was interested in an Apple Watch for my 100lb reward, maybe I should do it... problem is I was thinking of upgrading our resort to the Contemporary for our March trip to Disney as a reward - maybe I can pull off both?!?!

Anyone have any good/bad things to say about using an Apple Watch as a step/calorie burning tracker?

SO excited to hear your BP was good AND your weight was down!! But sorry about the stress fracture..... didn't you have an ankle injury a few years ago? Is it the same foot? Hope it recovery fast!

Great stories from you all about Splash Mountain and other wet rides! It was a terrific and FUN QOTD!

I was going to try and catch up with you all, but DH needs me to go look at a car with him.... I don't want to, but I'm trying to be helpful. Fortunately tonight's dinner is premade and will be ready in 10 minutes when we get back home. TTYL................P

This made me laugh - well done Auntie!

Well the kids came with me last night for a walk along the river but there weren't as many Pokemons as I thought there might be - I caught my first one though!

No stress fracture according to my dr. But why does the foot hurt. She told me I have arthritis in my big toe. No surprise there I have arthritis in both ankles and probably both knees. She wanted me to have my bog toe checked out but it is not bothering me so why should I? It is the toe that I had the bunion removed 7 years ago. If the foot is still bothering me next week I will call a friend who is a podiatrist.

Some great stories about Splash Mountain.

I have not done Splash Mtn. at DL but I have done it at WDW. I love it! I didn't get to go on it for years because the kids were too little and I felt like it was a ride I didn't want to do by myself. Now that my boys are older I got them to go on it with me at separate times and they both hated it. Well they loved it until the drop. So sadly I don't get to go on it as much as I would like to. I have never really been soaked on it, but my strategy is to duck right before hitting the bottom.

July 15th - Winnie the Pooh
disney_1007_wthep.jpg

The best ride with a 5 minute wait!

Winnie the Pooh replaced the Country Bear Jamboree in 2003 when Disneyland execs realized that Disneyland
was the only Disney park without some sort of Pooh attraction. It's located in the back corner of the park
next to Splash Mountain and is the greatest ride ever for two reasons:
1 - it's always a walk-on (aka: the infamous 5 minute wait)
2- it exits into the Pooh Corner bake shop so you can get a treat!

When compared to the other Pooh attractions it appears to have about 1% of the budget that Tokyo
has for its Pooh Attraction. (Side note: watch the YouTube video for the Tokyo version because it is AMAZING!)
But it is quaint. And adorable in its own way.

Winnie the Pooh loves honey and tends to over eat his fair share, going as far once to get stuck

I've only done the MK version and I don't think I got any more than a light spray. I'm not a big fan of roller coaster type drops, but I will still ride it and I just suck it up. I figure it sucks for about two seconds and then it's done.

At Cedar Point a couple weeks ago my wife and son went on a similar ride while I stayed back with my daughter and they got soaked. I mean, like jump in a pool with your clothes on soaked. My son didn't care, but my wife was not happy. I felt bad... dry, but bad.

Holidays/Vacations/Meals out - I estimate. I know I may under estimate but the reality it's still keeping me accountable (instead of I am not counting so I may as well!)
I pre count during preparation. I weight some things all the time (as pasta) but for piece of fruit or veggies I often take a guess

I think the biggest change this time is consistency. My rules are flexible but aiming to make balanced choices consistent. No on/off situations.

Sometimes eating something that I previously view as treat now can be part of my normal eating - few slices or glass of sparkling wine for example.

I can't believe that the one in DL is usually only a 5 minute walk on. It always has a line and now across from Seven Dwarfs there is even more of a line.

I don't weigh or measure my food but I have been trying to cut back in my servings by using smaller plates and bowls.

Splash Mountain - I love it! But I HATE being cold and wet. So I try to only ride it during the day time, with a fastpass, on hot days! DD and DH rode it this last trip in the evening cause we had 7:30 fastpasses. That was too late for me as I would have frozen. I also love that this is one ride we can get a big family picture on. I have memories of DD and I being absolutely soaked - to the point where I bought a pair of sweatpants in a gift shop for myself and DD, changed out of our wet bottoms (and I mean all bottoms!), and thats the only way we survived watching the parade that night.

Portion control: I pay attention to the portion sizes on labels and try to stick to that. I am also logging my food in myfitnesspal and trying to be more honest with myself about it.

I think portion control has been one of my main issues. We keep healthy snacks at work but I could just graze through everything all day negating the healthy part by overeating! So I counter this now by bringing my snapware containers that are measured out so I can keep better tabs on my grazing. Rather than a "handful" of almonds, I just fill the half cup half way and eat a more realistic serving. I've also started just spending the extra money on certain items to get things pre-portioned. I know I could do this myself (remember, I am still working on being less lazy!), but I know that I stand a much better chance of eating the correct portion if it comes packaged that way. The guilt of opening up a second pack of something is quiet the deterrent for me.

I haven't been logging this month, just focusing on getting active. But I've been trying to eat in line with how I used to eat when I was tracking but less exact in it.

Bonus-- :faint: <-- that's what I did when I got off of Pooh in Tokyo LOL! Sad to say I skipped Pooh at DL because I just couldn't get excited for it being just 3 days out from Tokyo. Because it is what they say. I wish I had pics or videos of the ride, but I was trying to be present in the attractions the whole trip since Youtube has better ride through videos than I could ever hope to take. The trackless system was awesome as were the effects. When you go into the Tigger room, the whole thing bounces-- even the ride car. And then the special effects to take you into the dream sequence were on point-- I'm still trying to figure out how part of it is done. Then into the Heffalump room which was a blast and had three different experiences you could have based which cart you were in. Ending in the happy honey room that even SMELLS like honey! *sigh* I don't even think I noticed the whole thing was in Japanese until the 2nd ride through. Haha! Rather than the bake shop, you exit to a popcorn stand that sells honey popcorn which was phenomenal. (Lots of popcorn flavors and collectors buckets in both parks in Tokyo-- it's a big thing there.) It was my favorite out of the like 8 flavors we tried. I mentioned it before, but they need to bring that popcorn here stat! Ok, that was long - sorry :)

July 15th - Winnie the Pooh

But don't worry Country Bear Jamboree Fans -- part of the ride still lives on as you look behind you.

Question of the Day - July 15th
Winnie the Pooh loves honey and tends to over eat his fair share, going as far once to get stuck
in Rabbit's door. Suffice to say, we don't want to follow in his footsteps and become wall decor.
(Hopefully you all have seen the original cartoons to get the reference? :) )

Let's talk portion control and your tips/tricks to manage your portions.
Do you pre-count items or weigh food? Do you log food and count calories?
Let's talk about how your eating habits have changed as a result of your lifestyle change!

Bonus question: Which Pooh attractions have you ridden? Which is your favorite?
(@Lady Marie - please make us jealous with your tales of Tokyo Disney!)

We eat a ton of chicken in our house. We now buy chicken that only weighs 4-5 oz. so we do not over eat. I also track my calories (some of the time). I mainly not put as much on my plate and I don't over eat. Doesn't work all the time though.

I have only ridden the ride at MK. It is a cute ride but not worth a long wait. We do not go on the ride every visit. It all depends on the line.

I'm a big time planner with everything so I also plan out my meals early in the day. I find it helpful because if I know I'm going to eat more calories that day for dinner I can scale it back some during lunch or breakfast. I log all of my food in MFP and I measure out everything on a scale. It's a pain in the @ss at times, especially if you're in a hurry, but it has to be done! I'm getting better to the point where I can estimate pretty close to the amount I'm eating which is helpful if I'm at a party or get together and I can't measure my food. We have our big preseason football party tonight which will be a challenge - tons of food and drinks!

----------------

Shockingly, I've never been on the Pooh ride. Every visit I bring it up and say how I would like to do it because I've never done it before, and for one reason or another, it just never makes the cut. Maybe this March?

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Good luck to anyone running - @courtneybeth try and stay cool!
