This could have been a Prescription Meds HORROR story!

My Friends 11 year old son was just diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. He was prescribed Synthroid. Thank goodness that my Friend is also on this medicine and familiar with the dosage!

She picked up her DS prescription at the local CVS and when she got home she seen that it was 125(mg?). She thought that her dose was a very high dosage (according to her doctor) and she takes 100 (mg). She called the pharmacist and she said that she thought it seemed odd because the nurse called in the script as 12.5 and that wasn't a usual amount so she 'assumed' that it should have been 125. My friend did NOT give the med to her son but decided to wait until today. She stopped in to CVS today and spoke to the head pharmacist and was told that if she would have give her DS that med at that high dose that he easily could have gone in to cardiac arrest!!!!!!! Thank goodness that Kelly is also on this med and was familiar with the dosage amounts somewhat.

Kelly REALLY feels in her gut that she should notify someone 'higher up' in charge of pharmacists in the state of PA. - but is just not sure who to contact. I told her to start with our local House of Representatives rep and try to get some contact info from there. She is still very shook up over what could have been.

Oh my goodness! So scary indeed. Thank goodness she caught it, but so many "what if's" if she hadn't.

A friend of mine has been having problems with her prescriptions at CVS. They keep giving her 3 yo dd only 1/2 her antibiotic prescriptions (for strep recently, and for an ear infection in June). I go to Walmart for my prescriptions.

One way to prevent this is to have a nurse of your doctor write down in english what you are to take and what dose it is supposed to be. Then compare that to what you get at the pharmacy.

Good thing she went with her instinct.
A friend of mine had a script for her baby and the pharmacy put in her other sons name instead. He is 9yrs old. The pharmacist filled it at the dose a 9yr old should take and not a 6 month old.
She caught it before she gave any to the baby because she remembered her Dr. telling her to give him 1/2 tsp.

MY CVS is too busy.. I go to Kmart for RX now..

she really should report this. The next person might not question the dosage. I would try for a regional manager of CVS and then the medical board. For her to assume anything about scripts is not a simple mistake. If she thought it was wrong she should of called back or not fill it until she knew for sure.

We go to Target for our scripts. If they question the script at all they won't fill it and are very good about comparing the different meds people take.
