There’s No Turning Back Now! 7/23 - Link to my new PTR!

Summer officially started for us in late June when school finally let out. Coy graduated from 6th grade after a tough couple of years for him at his new school. He thrived at his last school before we moved, so it was hard for me to watch him to struggle to make friends and to find meaning in his school work. He was able to find more of a balance by the end of the school year and he had come up with a plan all on his own to make his next school year better! He really is a mature young man, so I felt he was deserving of a celebration!

At the risk of getting flamed, I have to say that I just don’t believe in these mini-graduations. Kindergarten Graduation. 6th Grade Graduation. 8th Grade Graduation. My kids were once in a daycare that had a Pre-School Graduation, for goodness sakes! Yes, all of these mini-graduations are a cute way to mark a milestone, but I feel that they also take away from the importance of the High School Graduation. All of that being said, I still felt that Coy needed a celebration because (even though he is the brightest young man I know) he and I both had our doubts that he was going to make it out of 6th grade! Haha!!!

So let my hypocrisy begin! LOL! I planned a graduation party for him and since I love surprising the kids, I hatched a plan for it to be a surprise graduation party! First, I had to get people over to my house without Coy getting suspicious. Well, the weekend after school was out just so happened to be the same weekend that the pick-your-own farm that we frequent opened for cherry picking. One of my sisters, my mom, my kids and I left my house at 7am that Saturday to get to the farm by 8. Needless to say, the kids were beyond cranky. We had to get there that early because we were told by a farmer on our last trip there that their sweet cherries often get completely picked within one day! There was an entrance fee of $5 per person on the sweet cherry orchard but the sour cherry orchard didn’t have an admission fee. I devised a game plan where my mom and sister would go to the sweet cherry orchard and my kids and I would go to the sour.

Well, within 5 minutes, Coy and True were bored of picking cherries! True started taking pictures of herself to pass the time LOL:

Together, they only filled about a quarter of a grocery store bag! True wanted to leave and see the farm animals and Coy just wasn’t into it. In about another 5 minutes he started giving me looks like this:

He was not happy and the gnats were annoying him and True because they weren’t in the protective covering of the cherry trees. I told them to at least stand near the trees, but Coy didn’t want to do anything but leave. True stood under the tree, saw I was telling the truth about it providing some relief from the gnats and tried to convince her brother to stand under the tree too. He just wasn’t having it. Long story short, he and True kept asking to leave for the entire hour that we were there. Well, my mom, sister and I had been looking forward to cherry picking for over a month, so I told my kids that they had to be patient. The kids never acted like that when we went to pick strawberries or apples, so I was stunned at their behavior and a little disappointed too. Coy was being too stubborn to enjoy the moment and True was so bored that she even refused to hold the bag of cherries after I filled it up! No amount of games or jokes or distractions changed their attitude. I was pretty POed because it was a beautiful morning and they were too cranky to enjoy it. At the same time, I knew that when I got into a mood like that, it was hard to break me out of it too LOL!

You know, I always say, “Long story short” but it never is! Anyway, when we met my mom and sister at the fruit scales they had 2 bags of sweet cherries. That was a really good haul! When they weighed the bags, it came to 11 pounds! Then I weighed my 2 bags. They were also 11 pounds! I picked 11 pounds of cherries all by myself (well, Coy and True helped a little. Haha! A very little!)

I teased my mom and sister that I did the work of 2 grown women and we all got a good laugh out of that – even the kids! So the tension was finally lifted. We paid for the 22 pounds of cherries and I can’t remember how much it was but even with the $10 cover charge, they were still way less than what they would’ve cost if we brought them from the grocery store. My mom then saw that the blueberries were open too, and since we were all in a good mood by then…

we drove down to the blueberry patch…

and ended up picking a total of 6 pints of blueberries!

We went back to my house and divided up the cherries and blueberries so that everyone would have some. Next year, our plan is for all 3 of us (4 if our other sister comes) to go to the sweet cherry orchard and then go to the sour. Oh, and we’re leaving the kids at home! LOL! We had cherries and blueberries in everything for weeks! Back to that day, though. My sister and I went to the grocery store to pick up the food for Coy’s party. By the time we got back, both of my brothers and my dad were there. My brother distracted Coy for me by asking him to help him wash his car. Coy gave me this look like, “Why is this dude asking me to wash his car?” LOL but he helped him anyway. I was worried that Coy was suspicious and might figure out the surprise, but I went ahead and decorated for the party.

I sent my brother the “all clear” from my window and he led Coy inside. Coy was genuinely surprised to see all of us there ready to celebrate with him.

That looks like fun- I tend to agree with you about the mini-graduations but I also understand wanting to acknowledge and celebrate his personal accomplishment with a party. :) Sixth grade must be universally difficult- I know it is here. Jace would have been in 6th last year and Kya this year if they were still in public school so I've had the chance to talk with parents of their friends in school. 6th grade is definitely a year of adjustment for kids here as well. .

The pick-your-own fruit places are kind of fun- but I am always reminded of going with my mom and my grandparents to pick blackberries at a neighbors farm when I was about 10 or 11. Mom and grandpa picked lots while grandma and I complained about the heat, the thorns, the bugs... Mom and grandpa never took us back!

Glad you guys had a great summer! :goodvibes:

 That sounds just like how the kids were acting at the pick-your own farm :rotfl2:

Yeah, last year was really a tough one on Coy. In VA we also have a Standards of Learning test in 6th grade (as well as other grades) and unfortunately, a lot of focus is on that rather than focusing on helping children to truly learn. I know not all school systems and teachers are like that, but it is frustrating to see your child trying to learn how to pass an SoL. Funny, I just realized that SoL is an acronym for something else too :lmao: Anyway, I talked about education a lot with my aunts who were retired elementary school teachers and they were always nostalgic for the time when they taught because it seemed to be very different then. That's a discussion for a different time and place, though. For now, I'm just happy Coy and True are looking forward to starting school on Tuesday :goodvibes So summer isn't over for us just yet! Hopefully I'll be able to post about July tonight.

We saw Cars 2 in July even though I really didn’t want to see it. We showed up too late to the theater to see Green Lantern, so we had no choice but to see Cars 2. I had zero interest in seeing it because I’ve never seen all of Cars. I don’t know what happens when I watch it, but I always fall asleep! EVERY TIME! So it stood to reason that if Cars couldn’t keep me awake, Cars 2 was going to be a real snooze-fest! Well, I was wrong and I really enjoyed it. Oh, and the kids did too :lmao:

For the Fourth, we went to see fireworks in a neighboring town. These pictures, taken with my camera phone, don’t do it justice:

I want to mention here that one of my sisters’ birthdays is in July so she wants to go to Disney next year on the week of the Fourth! I’m sorry, but I had to veto that idea! I’m not voluntarily going to Disney on a week when crowd levels are 10 out of 10 almost every day :crowded: No way, Buddy! It’s bad enough that we are going the week before that. I told her she could still wear her Birthday Button even if it wasn’t her real birthday. I also told our other sister that she could wear a birthday button too since her birthday is in June. They both refused! I guess they are too cool for Birthday Buttons!

July was a hot month, to put it mildly. The heat index was often 100 to 110 degrees! Twice it got to 115!!! Needless to say, we spent a lot of time indoors. I did a lot of experimenting in the kitchen. One of my more successful experiments was homemade Pop Tarts. I had pie crust (we ate quite a few pies after cherry picking) and I had apricot preserves. I put the two together, crimped the edges, sprinkled the tiniest bit of sugar on top, baked them for about 10 minutes and viola!

Homemade Pop Tarts!!! Technically, they weren’t Pop Tarts because they didn’t go in a toaster, but still! :rotfl:

There were a lot of birthdays in July in my family. Besides my sister’s, our aunt had a birthday and my cousin’s daughter had a birthday (and her other daughter’s birthday was in August) so my cousin had a birthday party for the two of them. I told her to enjoy the joint birthday parties while they lasted because they wouldn’t want to share a birthday party forever! :) She’ll probably have a little longer to give her kids birthday parties together than I did since her kids are both girls. My cousin still has a few more years to milk the generic “Princess” party princess: Anyway, I won’t show her kids in these pictures, but I’ll show you a couple pictures of mine at the “after party” at our aunt’s house:

Sometime in July, I also got this wind chime on clearance at the grocery store for $2.50!!!

It was love at first sight with that wind chime and now that July is over, there is finally some wind around to blow it! It’s really peaceful sounding and I love the colors! I don’t have any furniture on my deck, just a grill, so that wind chime decided on a color scheme for me: Blue and brown! So now I’m looking for deck furniture and I hope to have it all furnished by the spring. If I can find more clearance items like that wind chime, I’ll be good to go! :thumbsup2

The last movie we saw in July was none other than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II !!! I felt like I waited forever for this movie! I intended to wait a few weeks to see it so that the crowds would thin out, but by Thursday of opening week, I was chomping at the bit to see it! I ordered our tickets from movietickets.com for the first showing on Saturday morning. On Saturday, we arrived at the theater about 30 minutes early. I posted on Facebook and Twitter something about how Disney had conditioned me to do this! :lmao: Clearly, my FB friends who had never been to WDW didn’t get my reference! I checked into the theater on Foursquare, saying I was seeing Harry Potter, and I got a Deathly Hallows Badge! :wizard:

It’s the little things in life that make me happy :yay: So the kids and I waited and waited, just knowing that we were going to be bombarded by crowds at any minute, but the crowds never came! Only a few people came in after us. I mean literally a few, like 3 or 4 people! What? Well, I guess the 10am showing was a little early for most Harry Potter geeks! Only the geekiest of fans, like myself, would drag their kids out of the house on a Saturday morning for this. We all remember the Great Cherry Picking Disaster, don’t we? Well, the kids and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I knew Coy would like it because he’s a big ol’ nerd like his mama! I was a little worried about True, though, because she refused to watch Harry Potter movies after she was scared by the shrunken head in Prisoner of Azkaban. Luckily several of the HP movies came on TV in the weeks before the latest movie came out. She watched them with me and Coy (sans the shrunken head scene  ) and they renewed her interest. Friday night, we watched Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows Part I on DVD. If you’ve seen the movies or read the books, you know that those two movies are pretty dark, so I was concerned that True might have reverted back to being scared. Luckily, she was scared but, “In a good way,” as she explained it! :rotfl2: She was ready to see the movie on Saturday! She and I both cried at the same parts and we were a mess by the end. Again, I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but DH Part II was very true to the book. All of the movies were, thanks to Ms. Rowling, but you don’t have to read the books to understand the movies. Books are always better than the movie adaptation IMO but HP movies run a very close second to the books. I really wish that I could take the kids to WWoHP this year, but it just won’t fit in the budget – or fit around all of our ADR plans! :lmao:

I love your windchime!!! So pretty!!! and the price was perfect, huh?

I've been enjoying your summer updates!!! :goodvibes

LOVE LOVE LOVE your summer posts! It looks like you guys had such a great summer together. I always get a little sad when I hear parents saying they wish school weren't getting out for the summer and can't wait until their kids go back, but you seem like the mama that really just enjoys every moment with her kids! :lovestruc

Oh and hell-to-the-no on July 4th weekend?!?!? I can't believe they won't wear buttons! I'm kind of bummed b/c we won't have any button-worthy celebrations this Jan. other than Savannah's friend going for her first trip, so she can wear a button if she wants. I should just make something up...we're celebrating going on our first family trip (without ILs) together! Yeah, that's it! ;)

Thanks, Ann! I just loved that wind chime. I like just about everything with the sun on it - which I think is weird since I hate the heat and prefer the rain :confused3 :lmao:

Thanks, Karen! We really did have a great summer. I have one more update to post - August - which I'll probably do today since I'm procrastinating with my kids' back to school paperwork :rolleyes1

Next summer, I'll be posting updates to a TR! :yay: My sister must not remember how crazy busy WDW is during peak season. There was no way I was going to agree to Fourth of July week! I wish I could get them to wear buttons but I think you guys could totally pull of First Trip Without the ILs buttons

To start things off, here is a cute picture of True:

I just love that picture :cutie:

So, where we last left off, we saw the final Harry Potter movie and Pottermania was in full swing. The Pottermore website was about to have a contest to allow a million beta testers into the site at a later date. If you aren’t a huge Harry Potter geek like I am, you can find out exactly what Pottermore is here. Well, there were going to be seven questions over seven days and the lucky few who were able to answer correctly were invited to join Pottermore as a beta tester before the general public in October. On the first morning that the questions were posted, I had gotten up too late and registration had closed! The second day I got up early enough but I couldn’t find book two anywhere! I think my mom borrowed it. Oh well. At least she was learning to love Harry too LOL! Day three and I was up at the crack of dawn again. I saw the question, entered the answer and I found the Magical Quill! I was allowed to enter my registration information and I was accepted to the world of Pottermore!!!

I haven’t gotten my email to get on the site yet – there were a million of us after all – but I know it is coming since they had to stagger entrance into the site. I can’t wait to get in. Coy and True will have some heavy competition for computer time once that happens!

One day we went to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On the way there, Coy saw this cloud:

He took a picture of it because he said it looked like a duck :donald: Well, maybe not THAT duck, but a duck all the same Haha! He’s now into taking pictures of things that look like other things. Coy has quite an imagination on him. Just the other day, he took this picture of some curls in my ponytail that looked like a heart:

Can you see it? Could you see the duck? He’s a very visual kid. Meanwhile, my very musical child True has been asking me for a drum set :rockband: Oh gosh… LOL!

Anyway, back to the movie, I should mention that I had a crazy weekend and I didn’t really feel like going to the movies on a Sunday night. I promised the kids, though, so we went. I’m so glad I pushed myself to go because the kids and I loved that movie! I resisted crying this time, though! There were a few tearjerker moments but they were mostly trumped by the action and what I like to call the “*** Moments” :lmao: I highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn’t seen it. The kids actually wanted to go back to see it again! I’m not totally opposed to that, but I think we will wait for the DVD.

The next weekend was my company picnic and my dad’s birthday. It was my ex-husband’s weekend to have the kids, so I asked him if I could switch weekends with him or if he could bring them back Sunday afternoon instead of Sunday night, but he refused. He’s been a real jerk recently because the Division of Child Support Enforcement caught up with him and he was served papers to appear in court for the tremendous amount he is in arrears. Oh well. Shoulda paid your child support, Buddy! It’s not my fault you’re a deadbeat, so don’t take it out on me and the kids! Whoa! Sorry! Repressed anger! :rotfl2: Anyway, since it was a family type of company picnic, I didn’t go since I couldn’t bring my family :sad2: My sisters volunteered to go with me :) I have the best sisters! I just didn’t feel like going anymore, though, so they came over to my house for my dad’s birthday. They showed our parents pictures from the trip they took to Mexico earlier in the summer. Naturally, my sisters brought up the topic of the next vacation they wanted to take: DISNEY!!! So we planned a little bit more for our Summer Sibling Trip! More about that in another post. So then our brother and his fiancé came over too. My kids got home at about 9pm (2 hours after their dad was supposed to bring them home) and soon after, we were singing Happy Birthday and eating cake!

Oh, and True informed her uncle that she had taken the liberty of writing his wedding vows for him and his fiancé! Direct quote, “You say to him, ‘You are the tree to my apple!’ and you say to her, “You are the granny to my smith!’” IDK what was up with the apple references. Maybe because they are having a fall wedding? I’m not sure that a twenty-something-year-old girl wants to be called a “granny” on her wedding day, though!

A few days later, Virginia had an earthquake! It was felt as far south as North Carolina and as far north as New York! It was a surreal experience because I had never felt the ground move beneath my feet before! It was insane and – since no one was hurt – I can also say it was pretty darned cool! We evacuated my building at work and stood outside for twenty or so minutes. I was able to reach my daughter pretty quickly. She was fine and hardly scared at all! What a trooper! My son, on the other hand, missed the whole thing because he was taking a nap! :rotfl: I couldn’t believe he slept through it! So I talked to True for a few minutes and we joked about how Coy would never believe he slept through an earthquake! I got off of the phone with her because I knew most people were having a hard time getting through to people using cell phones and I wanted to clear a line. I hoped on Facebook to let people know I was OK and to check on everyone else. It was easier for people to connect via FB, Twiiter and text than it was to make a phone call, so people were posting a lot that afternoon. Thank goodness, everyone was safe and we had little to no property damage in this area. Apparently, there were a few aftershocks in the days that followed, but they were pretty much all in the middle of the night so my kids and I never felt a thing.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, even though the earthquake was a pretty interesting event, I was a little stressed out by it and I almost smoked when we evacuated the building. I am a smoker in my second year of recovery. I phrase it that way because I believe “once a smoker, always a smoker” because some days it is a struggle not to smoke. But I wasn’t going to let two years without a cigarette go down the drain because of a 45 second earthquake! So I put on my big girl pants and I resisted the urge to bum a smoke from a friend. I promised to reward myself later by baking when I got home. Baking has been my stress relief of choice for about a year now. So the kids and I had an impromptu Lemonade Mouth Dinner and a Disney Movie Night! (I knew I’d squeeze a little more Disney in this post somehow!) I’ll post pics from that another time.

So after the earthquake, wouldn’t you know that Irene blew into town a few days later?!? We had an emergency meeting at work on that Friday to cover who was going to be on call etc and also to inform us that we could get hotel rooms (on the company’s dime) if we needed them. That made me feel better because by Friday, Irene was a Category 1 and I was more concerned with a power outage at home over anything else. It was good to know that the kids and I would have a place to stay if our power went out. Well by Saturday, Irene had been downgraded to a Tropical Depression for Northern VA and most of the DC Metro area. It was supposed to start raining around 1 or 2pm so on Saturday morning, I woke the kids up early to go run errands. I didn’t take them to the grocery store because I didn’t want them to be scared by the nearly empty shelves! The night before, people in my area were posting pictures on FB showing that most grocery stores and Wal-Marts were cleaned out! It was like the freaking Zombie Apocalypse! :lmao: Actually, it always gets like that when we have out-of-the-ordinary weather in this area. To me, it seemed silly because if the power went out then all of that food might spoil anyway! Non-perishables, people! LOL! Ouch! My thighs hurt from sitting on my high horse! :rotfl2:

After running errands, I took the kids to the movies. I knew we’d be cooped up for at least 24 hours, so I wanted to do something fun outside of the house before the weather got bad. It was about 11am and the kids chose Spy Kids 4D :3dglasses I didn’t sneak in candy or sodas this time and we skipped breakfast to make it on time to the movie, so the kids chose nachos for brunch and I chose popcorn! Nutritious! Not to mention the gazillion ounce sodas we all had! I spent $35 on a “meal” that consisted of nothing but junk. That’s roughly seven times more than what my sneaky snacks cost us! Well, at least it made me feel a little better about how much an OOP meal at Disney costs! Anyway, I absolutely HATED that movie! The first 20 minutes were nothing but gross out humor amd the plot was as deep as a kiddie pool. The kids enjoyed themselves and that’s all that matters, but I did notice that they didn’t ask to see it again one day or even ask to get it on DVD once it comes out. LOL! I am just very partial to Disney movies and other films that have interesting plots. I don’t think movies have to be dumbed down for kids. Man, how did I end up on this dang horse again? Haha!

By the time the movie let out, it was only sprinkling outside and we got home before it really started to pour. Thankfully, all of my family and friends were safe through the night, no one had property damage and no one lost power. That’s not to say that no one in the DC Metro area lost power, because plenty of people did, but my family and friends all happened to be in areas that didn’t. It was a serious and devastating hurricane in some areas of the country, so we were all blessed to be OK. I checked on my friend in New York and, thankfully, she was fine too!

On Sunday, a lot of businesses were closed and I had no idea how bad the roads may have been with falling trees and debris, so I decided the kids and I were staying in. I pulled out the bag of Mickey Head paint chips True and I swiped from Home Depot a few months back. It was finally time to make a countdown calendar!

The kids got pretty excited looking at the paint chips again and I noticed that Mickey paint IS Behr paint (something I didn’t realize during my last PTR) so when the kids asked to pick out new colors for their rooms, I agreed! Wouldn’t you know that Coy picked this?:

None other than a LGMH! Technically, Alien green. He’s a future DISer! He also picked Sonic Boom and Gamma Sector Green because he wanted the ceiling and the closet a different color! Actually, I think it might look good, so we’ll give it a shot. Anything is better than the Kelly green it was when we moved in. We had to paint it white to cover it up, so it is about time to give him some color in his room again. True’s room has been a baby pink since we moved in, so now she wants it to be:

That is Happily Ever After. She hasn’t decided on an accent color yet but she knows she wants it to be a bright pink and she wants me to fade the two colors together so it looks like a sunrise. I think that will be pretty!

After picking out the paint chips, we got to work peeling the MH off of the backing:

You can see my precious wind chime in the background, safe from the wind the night before. Priorities! LOL! Coy organized his colors beforehand:

True and I organized as we went along:

When we were done, we brainstormed how to lay out the calendar. We had more than enough to count down from that Sunday, but I thought it might be too much. I wanted to do 60 days but Coy thought that was too short. We settled in the middle at 75 days. He came up with the idea to do it as a rainbow:

I can’t wait to show you guys what it looks like! It’ll be soon because we’re almost at 75 days!!! Well, I think I better get off of the boards and get started with all of this back-to-school paperwork. I have a ton of it to complete for their first day of school tomorrow. I know this was a long post, but August was a busy month! I can’t believe our summer is over already, but now it is the fall season – my favorite season of the year. Softer sunlight, warm rain showers, cool air that will eventually be crisp air, falling leaves… We spend more time outside in the fall than in the summer and I am looking forward to that. The kids finally got home from their dad’s and I really need to stop procrastinating! Didn’t I say that a few sentences ago?!? I hope you all had a great Labor Day!

Another wonderful update Erin!! So, they are finally bringing deadbeat back to court, huh? Good!!! See, us child support agents really do do our job! (That's when we aren't on the Disboards!! :lmao:). I love the rainbow countdown calendar idea! Awesome job, kids!! I am soooo excited to follow you along on this trip! :goodvibes

Yep, I LOVE that rainbow countdown too! We just pulled our chain back out, but can't pull any off until we get to 100 days (Savannah bday in October!) :goodvibes

Saw the pic of the kids on FB for the first day of school! They look ready! :thumbsup2

Yes, I am so glad DCSE finally found him! He didn't make it easy, though! He didn't report his address any time he moved and he didn't report his new job when he was employed again. He was supposed to do both, as you know. I had to give them his new address and it was all downhill for him from there! :lmao: They should be garnishing his check soon, too :thumbsup2 Anywhooooo I can't wait to start counting down to our trip! Before I know it, I'll be just days away from Disney :)

Counting down is going to be so much fun! Especially since I know for sure this time we're going, you know? :yay: The kids are really excited too. They did a great job on the calendar. They were very ready for school yesterday! I think I was the one who wasn't ready :) They are growing up so quickly!

Hey Erin, didn't you get cool backpacks for you and the kids that were smallish? I can't find them in your table of context and I'm on the search for some backpack ideas!

The backpacks are on the now defunct PTR, that’s why you couldn’t find them! :lmao: I got Stowaway Day packs from LL Bean for me and the kids:

The backpacks fold into themselves, so if one of the kids doesn’t feel like carrying their pack anymore, I can fold it up to and put it in my pack. I checked the LL Bean website and it looked like the style changed since I bought ours, but it seemed to function in about the same way. We haven’t used the backpacks yet because I am “saving” them for Disney  but I like that they are pretty compact, yet they expand to hold a good amount of stuff. Oh, and they are super lightweight. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the link Erin! How are things going?!?! Getting into the fall-groove? We are!

It's pretty quiet around here without Ann! :lmao:

Any time! I can't wait to use those backpacks!

The kids and I are really enjoying fall so far. True hit the teacher jackpot again this year because she has a great teacher. I like her and True does too. She has a few of the same classmates from last year and a few new ones, so I'm glad True gets to make some new friends :grouphug:

Coy is adjusting really well to being a middle schooler and he likes all of his teachers this year too. I met them at back to school night and they all seemed like really engaging teachers :goodvibes I think Coy is going to be motivated to do a lot better this year. He's a lot more willing to go to school these days

Oh, I see I'm being talked about again, huh???? :lmao: Well, if I could ever load my photos onto photobucket, I would be able to update, but alas, photobucket is one of those sites my work computer doesn't like and I can't figure a way around it yet. Yep, they must have altered the security while I was away!!!
