The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Hey y'all,

Glynis, I'm so sorry that Timothy is so sick! Gosh poor baby! All of that at once, RSV, pneumonia & both ears & eyes! I'm glad your dr paid attention & ordered the tests! Prayers that the fluids & meds will work very quickly & get him well and home soon. I'm glad Alan was able to come home to help you. Prayers that this will all be over soon!:flower3:

Nancy, I'm glad Buddy is feeling better. I hope they will order therapy early. My hand & wrist are just starting to feel better due to the therapy. I've got a recipe for you. Pasta & olive salad! If Welby only wants chicken, I'll keep looking.

Semolina's Muffaletta Pasta

Olive Salad
2 1/2 cups green olives
1 cup black olives
1 cup diced tomatoes
3 tablespoons diced pimiento
2 tablespoons chopped garlic
2 tablespoons basil
1 1/2 teaspoons red pepper
3/4 teaspoon black pepper

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.

Muffaletta Pasta
1 1/2 ouncse ham, cut in sticks
1 1/2 ounces Genoa salami, cut in sticks
1/2 cup olive salad
2 cups cooked penne pasta
2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds
1/2 cup provolone cheese
Chopped parsley

Sauté the ham and salami in the olive oil until lightly browned.

Add the olive salad and the penne pasta and cook until the pasta is heated through.

Transfer the ingredients to a serving plate and garnish with the remaining ingredients.

Servings: 4

Kathy, I hope Johnny figures out what's going on. As he been exercising with you?

Gretchen, Have you ever posted your recipe for Shrimp Creole? I'm curious to see if your's is different than what we fix down here. ( I know you probably don't follow a recipe.)

I was feeling sorry for myself but after hearing about Timothy, I'm okay. I came down with a real migraine headache, late last night. I haven't had a full blown migraine since my hysterectomy! So it was strange & I didn't have any meds in the house for it. Ended up taking rx pain meds, but the headache is still kinda there but not as bad & feel drugged. But I'll be fine.

Gotta run, try to get to PT, maybe that will help my head. Maybe tuna steaks for dinner, but we'll see.

Gretchen- I don't know if I should thank Becky and Glynis or not for introducing us to the pioneer woman site. I've been planning menu's around the rosemary rolls from her site. I'm cooking a beef stew right now for tomorrow so we can have the rolls again. We had them Saturday and Monday too.

Here's the brown rice recipe- cook brown rice with water and a boullion. Add enough parm. cheese to keep the peanut gallery from grumbling. Tell your husband if he wants his skinny wife back he needs to stop complaining about balanced meals. At least that's how I make it in my house.

Hello friends,

This is another quick fly by. I WILL BBL.

I just got word from Wendie that her Gram is doing much better today, but the prayers are still needed. She is heading home tomorrow, but did get friends from the church to go be with Gram yesterday.

I need to get the Reporter out and then I will be back to catch up

I hope he does get a quick fix. But tell him if he needs the scooter, Bob may be able to give him all sorts of tips about where he can plug it in. You may have to watch out that he doesn't offer anyone else a ride. ;)

Too funny!

Kathy, I hope Johnny figures out what's going on. As he been exercising with you?

Heck no, that's my time!!!!!!:scared: He does a lot of walking at work though.

I hope you're feeling better this afternoon.

Marilyn- I only get mascarpone at BJ's when they have a coupon for it, it ends up being 2 dollars for a 1 pound container. Have you looked at Trader Joe's, they might have it. I don't think it's worth what they charge at the grocery store.

I didn't think to look at BJ's and I was just there yesterday morning. I did look at TJ's but theirs was a little pricey too. They have been lowering prices so I will check when I get there again.

I haven't check the site but did get the book from the library, I've been reading it like a regular book. :rotfl: Usually I just skim a recipe book until I see something I like.

Hey ya'll.

Any word from Glynis? Poor baby.

We've been home this week since he's a sicko. So I've actually had a chance to cook.

I did a potato- onion fritatta from this month's Martha Stewart Living and Rick loved it. He's been talking about it all week. I've been rewarming a portion each morning and putting different things with it. Yesterday was sour cream, today was chive cream sauce, tomorrow is salsa.

And so far this week we've done spaghetti with meat sauce, the Arugula tomato pasta on the cover of this month's Everyday Food(which was really good and super easy), and our friend Chuck made a huge batch of crab and sausage gumbo. Tonight is either cedar plank salmon or something with ground beef since I have some I need to use, or maybe shrimp....hmmmm

Chuck(who's my driving buddy- drives a United Cab) and I went uptown to the farmers Market yesterday and I came back with a haul! Shiitake mushrooms, arugula, jumbo shrimp, strawberries, organic liver, fresh butter, tomatoes.....then stopped at the French Bakery on the way home and got blue cheese bread for the sicko, olive rosemary round for me, and 2 lovely ham and cheese croissants..which I hate to admit that I ate both. For lunch. And didn't offer to share at all. I have dreams about these things. It's sad really.

I have no pictures cause the new camera is in Florida already and the old one is hiding cause it's jealous.

:grouphug: for all the boys- since they seem to be falling apart.

Wow! Doesn't that sound like fun. Poor Timothy:hug: I am glad he is doing well enough to go home. Everyone will sleep better.

I must have missed something somewhere. Did Wendie's Gram get sick?

Glynis- is Timmy feeling better?

Lori- Wow! Rick really got his socks knocked off! are you surviving?

SHeryl- Oh my! That looks so good! I think that Welby wants chicken. SHe has been on a chicken kick.

Funny! Welby says my house is always clean and it really is not. She has been frantic that in case she goes in during the night I may need to stay with Nola and because of her dogs she is worried that I will encounter dog hair. I cannot convince her that is not a problem. Anyway, she has always done her cleanup after Nola goes to bed so I told her about my flybaby thing....do what needs to be done early on and the rest will either happen or not but the house is fine. So she is rocking.....does her "flight of the bumblebee" first thing and is sitting pretty all day. Brian wants to know if she is doing that Nesting thing":lmao::lmao:The poor guy just cannot keep up with her :rotfl2:I think they are hysterical....and Nola is following right along ion her Mother's footsteps......and another girl........:rotfl:

Poor Welby I had a hard time keeping up with Alex when he was little. I could not imagine having to do that and be waiting on another :faint:

Sorry ladies, I kind of flew in and then out.

Yes, I heard from Wendie that her Gram took a turn for the worse yesterday. She was beside herself but was able to get some friends at Gram's church to go and be with her. She seems to be doing a bit better today but Wendi is a mess. Bless her heart!! She has really had it. She asked for prayers for her Gram. She is heading home tomorrow to be with her.

When I hear anymore I will let you all know.

I will BBL.

Glynis, praying for Timothy. Hope tonight finds him much better.

Dream Girls was very good.....there was 20 of us so it was fun.

I did end up at the doctor for antibiotics......I will see my dentist Monday.

I have to read back & see what's going on with Wendie's Gram......Somebody please text me with what I missed.

Dinner was Mexican.....

Glynis- I hope poor Timothy feels better soon. That must be so scary. He's the third baby I've hear of in the last month getting hospitalized with RSV.

Aimee- I hope you're feeling better and in less pain. Sometimes a good 20 minute cry is SO worth it.

Maria- ouch

Prayers for Wendie's gram.

Dinner tonight was BBQ chicken burgers topped with guacamole and roasted cauliflower on the side.

Ladies I really need some advice. I found out today that our neighbor and friend just found out he has cancer last night. His wife told me herself. Our backyards back into each other and our kids play all summer so we see them then almost daily. In the winter not as much, we've formally socialized twice and have done some formal playdates and I do talk with his wife in some form almost every day. So we're close but not super-close. They have a large support system but I want to do something and help as much as I can, especially because of my proximity but I don't want to overstep my bounds either if that makes sense. They're the type to turn down offers of help so I need to just do something. What do you guys think they would want to the most. She says she's been crying all day. Please pray for them, he's in his late 30s and his kids are 4 and 1.

THinking of Timothy and hoping he's getting some well desrved rest, as well as Mom and Dad.

Sending good thoughts out to Wendie's Gram too.

Thanks for well wishes for Rick. It's a seasonal thing that usually lasts a couple of weeks. Antibiotics don't do anything for him. So it's just a wait game.

We ended up doing cedar plank salmon, sweet green beans with Greek seasoning and homemade mashed taters. It's been awhile since I've made them from scratch- boy, is my arm tired now.

Tomorrow is shrimp. Maybe scampi. Something easy- I plan on doing shrimp stock with the heads and shells to put up for SuperBowl- and that'll take me a bit. Have you ever seen an inland Northern girl try to trim and devein shrimp?:rotfl2: Yeah, it takes a bit.

Glynis, so glad your son is feeling better , it's so worrisome when they look and act so sick.
Ann, I hope your husband enjoys the PC game We now have Fios for our cable and they don't carry PC or URI games and we miss them . My son has the game on the radio now, it's tied!
Hope all those of you and family members with physiclal ailments feel better and are getting good results from the physical therapy. I'm a PT and while we can't help everyone , with time and lots of good care, most improve greatly.
wfd sloppy joes, french fries and salad :not exactly gourmet but wow was it tasty

How about offering to watch the kids so they can have some alone time to be together and talk? Since your kids already play together and all it shouldn't be too weird. And maybe it'll take some stress off them that the kids are doing "normal" stuff.

I'm still so confused where to post.....Lord help me.....

Glynis, I'm so happy your on your way home.

Ellen, thank you for keeping us up to date on Wendie.

Aimee, praying for you.

Kat, I totally missed that Johnny was having problems. I will check in tomorrow after he sees the doctor.

Lauren, I was having a small debate with Miss Emily about the Playbill!!!!
WOW, was I this moody when I was 15????;)

SO sorry I'm not keeping up.....

Michelle- your friends are in my prayers. I think that Lori is right, your friends need time to process this and the kids need to be away from them when they do. I believe that since you have had teh kids before offering to have play dates in your home will be a welcome respite, not only for the parents but for the children. They may not understand the implications of cancer but they do understand stress.

Maria- 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love all of the girls inmy family but I have mixed feelings about their teenage years. Okay..........not so mixed. I still curl up into a fetal ball when I recall shopping trips with Debbie and Kim;
