The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Good morning everyone, hope you are all staying warm today.

Bethany- I think your move was a good choice going by your scale.

Glynis- I used to live near ski resorts, but have never been skiing. Now I live about a ten minute drive from the atlantic and I only go to the beach if I have to for work.

Janice- I've never read Eating Well, so I can't really help you. If they look good to you, it's only 28 days, go for it.

Not sure what's for dinner tonight, some kind of chicken I'm assuming. Maybe I'll make a pot pie, it's a pot pie kind of day.

What for Momma?

WFD: Meatloaf, egg noodles and a veggie...gotta make it soft. Andrew is getting his braces today!

Have a great day!

:rotfl: I'll have the stew as well with some bread for dipping. One likes rice, the other noodles.

Good luck to Andrew today.

I am soo not looking forward to the ride home. I took me the triple the time to get to work this morning and this is just the beginning of our storm.:faint:

I think I am going to make a few of the Eating Well recipes and try them out. Some of the WW recipes I don't like the taste of. I think that is one reason I never stick to a diet. I need TASTE.

Have fun everyone I'll check in when I get home.

Well, I live within 30 minutes of some of the best skiing in all the country, and I have never been skiing in my life! I figure I can break my leg just fine on my own without strapping strips of wood onto my feet and pointing myself down a mountain!

:rotfl::rotfl: I agree wholeheartedly! Of course, I'm a major clutz and can hurt myself in ways previously unknown to other mortals. Heck, at 4 years old I broke my leg playing with a balloon in my house with my father. You know, the game where you try to keep the balloon from hitting the ground? Well, I tripped and fell on my leg funny. And cracked the bone lengthwise. So, skiing is out for me.

Glynis, I've been skiing. I haaaaaaaaate it. I have no idea why anyone finds that to be fun :confused3 After half a day, I opted to spend the rest of my ski vacation in the lodge with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book. :thumbsup2

That's what I would do when we would go on church ski trips and junior and high school. I'd sit in the lodge drinking hot chocolate. Way more fun than skiing. And now that I'm all grown up, I like to add a little butterscotch schnapps to the hot cocoa. ;)

WFD: Meatloaf, egg noodles and a veggie...gotta make it soft. Andrew is getting his braces today!

I hope he does ok. My mother had to get braces late in life and said the worst part for her were the sores in her mouth. She would gargle with maalox and that helped, but if Andrew's get really bad, ask the dentist to prescribe some "triple mix". That has something that with help with the pain in it. It tastes TERRIBLE but it helps.

Glynis- I used to live near ski resorts, but have never been skiing. Now I live about a ten minute drive from the atlantic and I only go to the beach if I have to for work.

I know what you mean. I live 15 to 20 minutes from the beach and my feet haven't touched the sand in so long I can't even remember.

:rotfl: I'll have the stew as well with some bread for dipping. One likes rice, the other noodles.

What a good mama/wife.

Be careful on the roads and be sure to let us know what you think of the recipes. I'm trying to lose the weight I gained while Daddy was sick.

Tonight's dinner is still up in the air. Hopefully I'll get inspired when I get to the store.

Glynis - that soup really sounds delicious. And I'm pretty sure I have all the ingredients at home, so it will get made this weekend. I'll be cooking lots of soup this weekend, its gonna be so cold down here!

And Robin - I think I have the makings of pot pie as well!

thanks for the ideas!!

Good Morning!

bethany- you are killing me with your temperature rules!
Glynis- smart woman....no skiing for me either!
gretchen- did you save teh balloon from teh floor?????

I think Nola is better, she was not sick...just "needy". She is not usually clingy at all. Welby said she is back to two naps a day so maybe she is going through a growth spurt or just fighting something off. They are coming wn after she wakes up today so iu can squeeze my Princess.

Marisa got the okay to drive yesterday. We told her we will still take kady to and from the bus stop. I know the sidewalks are okay but the road is not and we don't want her to fall. She was scared so she ws glad I called her yesterday. She is not used to depending on anyone so this has been hard on her. Maybe Buddy can go for a ride with her until she gets used to the way her leg moves now.

Last night I cooked panko breaded and pan fried chicken breasts, my version of Spanish brown rice with corn adn green beans. We are having leftovers this evening and I have a turkey stock cooking on the stove.

My poor skin is sooooo dry because of this cold weather! I took a shower tonight and slathered on the lotion and I am still dry.

Mine is wicked dry too! I actually slathered vaseline all over my hands and slept with gloves on last night. It did seem to help a little. I have been using the thick cetaphil cream on my legs and arms, so they are OK, but my face is SO dry, it is ridiculous. One of my coworkers told me that she has been putting vaseline jelly on her face at night because of her dry skin! I think that would make me break out.

I'm dealing with the dry itchy skin, too, thanks to the cold. finally found a face moisturizer that works but still haven't found a body moisturizer.

What kind are you using that works? I need something new because my usual stuff is not cutting it in this weather! I need a good eye cream too. I feel like the skin around my eyes is going to peel off!

I should clarify on the sink thing before you all think I am going to float away  it is not the pipes that are leaking. I think that the grout in the back of the sink wore off and so when water splashes behind the sink some of it drains through the crack down on to the underpart of the sink area. We are talking a couple of drops here, not a flood. Hence the "ignore" thing.

Last night's dinner was homemade chicken noodle soup because John is sick. Right when I start to feel better he gets sick! I am actually worried that he might be getting bronchitis because he has a bad chest cough. I did take a picture of the soup but did not upload it yet. I just threw whatever I could find in the fridge into it--carrots, parsely, onion, green peas, pasta, etc. plus a couple of shredded chicken breasts.

Not sure WFD yet.

Lauren, I hope "A" is ok.......very exciting for him.

Bethany your scale made me laugh!
Tomorrow with the wind chill we are going to be -20 degrees!

Kat, dinner sounds perfect for this weather.

Nan, I received my Alpine shipment yesterday....thank you so much for the site. I'm in Keurig heaven!

Aimee, I'm so glad your going ahead with the surgery. You must be frightened but your quality of like is going to sky rocket!!!!!!! My prayers are always with you.

Janice, are you buried in snow????? I hear I better bring the coat I dread......If my private power surge starts with this coat on I have no chance of recovering!

Ellen, I'm sorry I missed you but hope you have a ball!!!!!!:woohoo:

Everyone suffering with dry skin.....Greg has a horrible time & best results are Eucerin. He also has a prescription for Salex which is wonderful. I use it in the winter and it is excellent!
For faces Philosophy I have found to be the best!

I wish I could say I have some great plans the next few days but I plan on staying home & warm!

Just a side note......I put my extra Kcups in my extra large Lock & Locks:lovestruc

Maria Right now we are up to our eyebrows in snow. Next week they are calling for mid 30's and rain. But remember this is Chicago wait 10 minutes and it changes. Yes bring the big bear coat. Downtown get windy especially by the lake.

Ok. I finally found a recipe that both Alan and I can agree on for tonight. It's a low carb pulled pork recipe. It's in the crock pot now, and smells good! I'll serve it with rice for the kids, and just plain for Alan and me. I'm also making a low fat coleslaw with the leftover cabbage from last night. I loves me some pulled pork with coleslaw. If I decide to get fancy, I'll make some more biscuits for the kids to have with their pulled pork. However, I'm thinking they'll like the rice better. My kids don't like sammies that drip all over their hands.

I'm happy to report that since starting this healthy eating, Alan has lost 8 pounds. I haven't lost any, but didn't really expect to, since I haven't started exercising, yet. I need to organize my days so that I can fit in a half an hour of walking each day. That's on my to do list for next week. Right now, I'm focusing on the healthy cooking aspect. Alan has been able to do a half hour work out each night while I'm getting the kids to bed, and it's really helping him. I'm so proud of him!!!

The only change I would make on the soup is to add more Worcestershire sauce, and make a larger pot of the soup. Alan has requested it again, next week, so I guess it was a larger hit than I thought. I think I'll try it with elk sausage next week instead of hamburger and see what that does to the taste.

Oh, will someone remind me to start taking pictures of my food? I have a great camera now, and need to start contributing!

Hey y'all,

I was just cleaning leaves out of the pool baskets! Yikes that was cold. I had to do it in the drizzling cold rain too! We are actually going to get a hard freeze. I'm sure all of you trudging through ice & snow feel really sad for us poor Nola girls!!

Bethany, I would definitely have to add a few unapproved words to your scale!

Nancy, I'm glad Nola's not sick! Happy for Marisa that she got the okay to drive too!

I've been slathering on lots of moisturizer too! My skin is not used to having the heater going for so long.

I can't figure out what to fix for dinner. I still have soup but I'm tired of that. I want something comforting (i.e. fattening) & so everything that comes to mind is bad!

p.s. Glynis thanks for those recipes! I might be making all of them this weekend.

One of my favorite lunches, a nice big salad.

Tonight I'm going to try Speedy Chicken Pot Pie from this months cooking light.

Glynis- I made some tasty carrot muffins the other day, they are mostly carrot with a bit of flour for binder. I think they will be a staple in my eating better menus.

Sheryl- Trust me, I'd pick snow over cold rain anyday. The snow you can at least stay a bit dryer. Besides, at least we are supposed to be cold now and are prepared for it, I hope you all warm up soon.

Becky- I can't imagine putting vaseline on my face, I'd break out just going near it. I had a similar water problem, it gave me a bit of a scare on Christmas eve when I took out the garbage from under the sink and saw water. It was getting spalshed out of the sink down the sprayer hole. I thought I was going to have plumbing problems over Christmas.

That's my idea of a great day, right there! I also enjoy dropping everyone else off to ski, and then going to the outlet mall nearby and shopping!

I adore outlet shopping.

I bet the go ahead to drive will boost her a LOT. I would hate being completely dependant on other people like that.

What kind are you using that works? I need something new because my usual stuff is not cutting it in this weather! I need a good eye cream too. I feel like the skin around my eyes is going to peel off!

I am a big fan of "salon quality" skincare. I've tried every drugstore brand under the sun and just waste money on it. I ran out of my usual moisturizer when in Orlando (was using Caudalie) and stopped in at Mall of Millenia to hopefully find a Sephora and get more - they don't have one there! So I went to Neiman's instead, stopped at the Kiehls counter and they recommended this:http://www.kiehls.com/_us/_en/face/moisturizers/ultra-facial-cream.htm Since it was cheaper than the Caudalie, and I could return it if it didn't work, I bought it. OMG I LOVE IT. I actually look forward to washing my face nightly so I can put some on. A teensy bit goes a long way and it's not greasy at all.

I don't use any eye cream... maybe I should?

Hope John feels better soon!

It's freakin' cold here, and some schools closed :confused3 None of the biggies but the smaller ones. It won't be above freezing until Saturday night they think but there was little moisture on the ground so it's not like we have icy roads.

Tonight UT plays - DH has been waiting for this game for weeks! It's evidently tradition (:confused3) to order the party pack from Panchos for the UT game. It's tacos, chips, flautas, and taquitos. Fine with me - I don't have to cook!

Aimee, I was trying not to "plug" myself, but I have to put in a good word for Mary Kay products! We really do have great skin care products for all skin types!

Which just reminded me that I was supposed to get together with Lori/zipuzee to bring her products! Oh shoot! :guilty:

One of my coworkers told me that she has been putting vaseline jelly on her face at night because of her dry skin! I think that would make me break out.

That's a little greasy. :crazy2: I got this Vaseline gel once thinking it would be more "gel" like, less grease but it was basically clear Vaseline in a tube.

Maria- I think I may have a tub of Eucerin somewhere. :thumbsup2

Just found out that Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides is going to be filming this summer and slated for release next May! :woohoo:

Dinner tonight will be shrimp and veggies with noodles I think.

Tonight I'm going to try Speedy Chicken Pot Pie from this months cooking light.

Please let us know how this is. The recipe looks so easy! Also, would you post your carrot muffin recipe? I love carrot muffins.

Marisa got the okay to drive yesterday.

That is great! I'm sure she will feel so much better with that bit of independence. I'm glad Nola isn't sick.

Glynis -- Wow, that is great for Alan! Men always do seem to lose weight quickly.

Sheryl -- Becky and I were saying the other day how we could never go on a diet in January. The cold weather makes us crave all the foods you can't have when dieting.

Count me in the non-skiing crowd. A lot of our neighbors ski, but the sport has never held much appeal to me. It is expensive, it's cold, it's potentially dangerous (one of my neighbors just tore her ACL skiing), and it requires more equipment than would ever fit in my little car. I figure with the skating, I spend enough time in the cold without adding skiing. That said, I may put Liam in a vacation ski program through the rec center. That way, he could go with a friend if he wanted, but I wouldn't have to ski.

My computer is really slow today, so I know I quoted stuff earlier, but couldn't post and now I've forgotten what I was going to say.

Dinner tonight is seared bay scallops with rice noodles and Asian vegetables. I'll make the kids a piece of steak because scallops are not on the approved foods list.

Recipe for the muffin, please???? My kids are having early morning play rehearsals, and those would be good portable breakfasts.

BBL...I have a fussy baby (the first time ever...he only napped for a hjalf hour and whiny) and helping andrew with school work...

But I had to say...

I LOVE MY MARY KAY SKIN CARE. I also heard it is good to apply lotions as soon as possible after the shower when the skin is still damp.

I thought of a couple other things...my sister puts baby oil on in the shower. She said it helps...also she heard somewhere that coffee is good applied in the shower...Heck, tap a sip, slather on, take a sip, slather on! :lmao:

As for the vaseline, my friends Mom does this every night and her skin was always beautiful and young looking.

OK, back to the kids...
