The What's For Dinner Thread - May '09(recipe index in OP)

Hi, everyone. I'm sorry not to have posted for a few days. My brother and his family are coming for a visit and I'm running around trying to get things ready for them. I've also had to deal with Katie's registering for middle school, and a few more things. Suffice it to say it's been crazy around here!

Lauri - my heart bleeds for that young family. As to what you can do? Just be there and offer whatever feels right for the moment.

Ellen - Welcome home! I hope you had a great trip, and I, for one, can't wait to hear about it!

Becky - Great food pictures, again! You always make my mouth water!

I'm sure I've missed a ton, but my mind is all mushy!

Dinner tonight will be ham steaks with a mustard sauce. Quick and easy!

Maria, The dr. said it looks like the sinus infection is clearing up. He said to finish the antibiotics I'm on and that he thinks I'm fine for sugery! How are you feeling?

Janice, The surgery is Wednesday at 7:00 am. Yes I did decide to have the carpal tunnel done also. With an aide lined up & Angelina not working right now, I thought it was best just to get it all over with now.

Lauri, How is your MIL doing?:flower3:

Becky, The restaurant food looks good but honestly your dishes look just as good! Your plating is like artwork! I just wish I could get a taste of your food. ;)

Lauri How is your friend during?

Janice thanks for asking I think the shock is wearing off. They are trying to make all the decisions that need to be made. I just can't image having to make those kind of decisions and I hope I never have to. Been doing what as much as possible for them but my friend has always been the type to do everything for everyone else and doesn't handle accepting help and comfort from others to well. I just pray the good Lord holds her near and gives her what she needs.

Lauri, How is your MIL doing?:flower3:

O Sheryl she had to have surgery a week and 2 days after the 1st surgery the temperary hip they had put in also broke causing more infection so now she will have to be in traction for 6-8 weeks (bed ridden) Then after that time if infection is under control they will replace her hip along with some bone graphing we think. She is bummed because they wanted to go down to Gulf Breeze Alabama for the winter but we aren't sure about that now.
I am glad to hear your having both done at once less recovery time. I hope it all goes well for you and you have a quick recovery.

Lauri & Sheryl, I'm feeling better. Ended up on antibiotics. The fever is gone but I have a horrible cough.

Sheryl, I hope your relieved that the surgery can happen & be behind you:hug:

Lauri~ still praying for that poor family. I still have no words to express how sorry I am.

Kat, your right. I haven't seen Ann. If we hear nothing by the morning I will give her a ring.

Marisa~ How was your first day back? I'm sure your exhausted.

Wanted to share with all of you that my BF in Florida is having a baby girl! When she asked my nephew if he wanted a little baby sister he said "no thank you Mommy":rotfl:

Dinner will be left over crab cakes.

Hey all! Just a quick post as dinner is almost ready. Having Baked Ziti tonight, with salad and breadsticks.

Maria--glad to hear the fever is gone but take of yourself with that cough!

Sheryl--good luck with the surgery. Will be sending lots of prayers your way!

Lauri--continued prayers for your friend and her family.

Okay, oven timer just went off. Must go!

Hi, everyone. I'm sorry not to have posted for a few days.

We missed you!

Glad to hear all is still on for Wednesday. Do you know how long you'll be in the hospital?

I just pray the good Lord holds her near and gives her what she needs.

That is what I will pray for.

Maria - "No thank you mommy".....:lmao:

Glad to hear you're feeling better. Let me know what's going on with the CG ressie.

Dinner was yummy! I added onions, spinach and feta sausage and Kalamata olives to TJ's marinara and had it on a whole grain angel hair pasta. I also sauted some zucchini in olive oil then sprinkled it with a little parmesan.

I'm worried about Ann, she hasn't checked in today, I don't think...

Kat, your right. I haven't seen Ann. If we hear nothing by the morning I will give her a ring.

Thanks for checking on me my friends. I never had time today to post.
I think I need a time management course now!:lmao:

I went out to run an errand with the kids and ended up dropping in on my parents for lunch. I wanted to go bye and take my Dad's trash cans out for him. Emma was fussy this afternoon and is snoozing right now. I hope she sleeps tonight!

Hugs and prayers to all! I really need to catch up with everyone.

Marisa, hope your first day back went well.

Maria, glad you are feeling better. Please watch the cough. I see you decided to go to Bermuda in Aug. ...good for you!

Sheryl, you are smart having everything done Wednesday with the aide and Angelina around to help. Best of luck and a speedy recovery.

I spoke to the nurse & she recommended seeing a GP to be sure I'm okay for surgery. I was actually able to get an appt today!

I'm glad everything will be okay! I'm  that you drank on those antibiotics! Is Angelina going to update us on Wednesday after your surgery?

Becky, The restaurant food looks good but honestly your dishes look just as good! Your plating is like artwork! I just wish I could get a taste of your food. ;)

I was thinking the same thing! Everything looks just fabulous, Becky, as always!

Ouch! I'm sorry she's having so many issues.

Wanted to share with all of you that my BF in Florida is having a baby girl! When she asked my nephew if he wanted a little baby sister he said "no thank you Mommy":rotfl:

We ended up at Panda Express. DH "forgot" to grocery shop so we had no food. WTH? :confused3 I wanted to pick up some Nylabones for the pups at PetsMart anyways so it was in the same parking lot.

I'm going to my first WW meeting in about 5 weeks tomorrow :scared: The upside is that I had the nurse at my GI's office this morning check my chart and I've lost weight since my last visit so maybe I haven't fallen too far off the train :confused3

Baseball Update: Liam finally got to pitch tonight! :cool1: He did very well. He pitched two innings -- one strikeout, no walks, one run scored (due to errors). He helped himself out by catching a line drive up the middle, and he got a hit. The team still lost -- they were losing 4-1 when Liam came in -- but he was happy because he had a good game. Whew.

I made us BLTs for dinner.

When she asked my nephew if he wanted a little baby sister he said "no thank you Mommy"

Aimee -- I'm sorry to hear you are having health issues again. I hope your doctor is able to figure out how to help you quickly and prevent the flare.

Marisa -- I'm glad you are doing better. I hope you had fun blueberry picking. Caili likes berry picking too. I think we missed the strawberries this year though.

Ann -- I think every mom with a newborn needs a time management course! Either that or a clone.

Sheryl -- I'm glad they are able to go ahead with the surgery. My thoughts and prayers will be with you Wednesday.

Now I need to go get something more to eat after looking at all of Becky's photos. I didn't eat much of my sandwich at the game.

Aimee - hoping everything works out for you my friend.

Laura - Congrats to Liam for getting to pitch and coming through big time for the team.:thumbsup2

Becky - Awesome pics as usual. I agree yours look just as good if not better than the restaurant ones!!!:goodvibes

Sheryl's DH (Bob) is going to call me when the surgery is over so that I can update y'all.

Thought about my wfd friends tonight. My neighbor stopped by and dropped off a fantastic HUGE watermelon. I like watermelon, but I asked myself, what else can I do with this monstrous melon other than fruit salad. The answer: cocktails, of course.

Watermelon Martini

1 cup watermelon juice
1/2 cup vodka
1/4 cup simple syrup
juice of 1 lime

place all ingredients in a shaker and shake well. Serve over ice.

Yummo!

Stephanie You can freeze watermelon cubes and make slushes for the kids just add more fruit and some sprite or 7-up to thin it out.

Sheryl I am glad things sound like they are working out for you and Bob.

I Have to go jump in the shower I lost track of time I be back later to complete my thoughts.

Good morning everyone!

Steph - That martini sounds great!

WFD - Spaghetti & meat sauce, slow cooked broccoli, salad & garlic bread.

Good Freezing morning all! It is so cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheryl- I'll be thinking about you this week, I know that having this surgery was a huge decision for you and will be praying for success! I agree that if you need to do this having Angelina here to help makes the decision an easier one. I wanted to tell you that she is one brave gal! Having your own business is exciting but I imagine that it si also a daunting challenge. Good for her and your DSIL!

Maria- I am so sorry that I talked you silly yesterday! DId you need a nap when I finally let you go :upsidedow I still am amazed at the flight home you had :scared:, there is no way that behavior wa acceptable!

Ellen- welcome home! You know that I will keep your family in my prayers. If Jay is going to Iraq please try to see a little light, Timmy says is it quiet there and he told his brother that he feels guilty at the living conditions that he is enjoying now. On Chris' first tour there was not even running water, showers were from these portable things. Food was MRE's and communication was awful. Timmy has AC, decent food, internet access, etc. Please consider Skype, it is like a webcam phone thing and a great way to stay in touch. Be advised that a Mom may not get their call answered....as my sister may be finding out. She introduced Timmy's toe, which was badly infected, as "Bumpy" (Timmy used to name his toes :confused3)
Anyway, it really is a great way to sty together when you are so far apart.

I know that your trip was work and you were not crazy about the food. Would you want to share some of the meals that you had? I always like to hear what "normal" meals are in other parts of the world.

Lauri- still thinking of all of you. Your MIL and your friends are included in my prayers

Laura- YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Liam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cheer2::cheer2:

Steph- don't laugh......how do you juice a watermelon?

Kat- thank God for you! Maria and I were talking about our little group yesterday and thinking about how nice it is to have us all I have to look to you! Thank you far keeping us all informed, something like taking calls to fill us in is more appreciated than you know. :grouphug::grouphug:

Becky- YUM once again! Your vacation food that you make rivals food that we buy!

DInner was steak, green beans salad. I also had a black bean and corn salad adn Buddy had potato salad.

Tonight I want to make a bulgar casserole. I hope tha tI have everything in the house that I need :thumbsup2

Good morning everyone:flower3: I am so glad for all of you here what a great little(big sometimes can't keep it all straight) group You all are the best. :grouphug:

Kathy-thanks for keeping us all informed your the best.

Laura-YAAA for Liam:cheer2:

Nancy-I know what you mean it's 51 in MI this morning. BRRRR wish I could sent some down south.

WFD--Glynis Beef roast in crock pot Hubby's request. Shrimp Fried rice boys request.

Morning Y'all,

It's crunch time here, I have a ton of stuff I need to get done. Clean my fridge, then shop to stock it & the pantry. Since other people will be seeing my washcloths & towels, I really need to get some new ones. Since Alexis has previously told me those were rags & not washcloths!

My sinuses still hurt but my throat feels better. The dr cleared me so I guess I'm good to go.

Lauri, I will continue praying for your MIL! Also praying for your friend.:flower3:

Aimee, You are not allowed to fuss at me! I'm much older than you are! ;):lmao: Yes I did drink some champagne at the wedding while on antibiotics. I knew it wasn't a good idea, but I also felt like it was time to celebrate love & family. With my upcoming lock-in, I decided to have a good time. Of course I know you are right & Im paying for it now, with sinus pain. But I had lots of fun Saturday night! ;)

Maria, I'm glad they finally put you on antibiotics! Be cautious & take care of that cough. Congrats on your new "niece"!

Nancy, To juice a watermelon you just put it in the blender. You can strain it after depending on what you're making with it. Angelina is still working on all the details, so they are not new business owners yet. It's taking time, but all looks good! Did you get your Princess back yesterday?:cutie: Are you happy?!:lovestruc

I can't believe y'all are still so cold up there! Like Kat's tag says "Blow some of that cool air down here!"

Stephanie, That drink sounds yummy!

Ann, Glad to hear you are okay! I wish I could give you an extra 5 or so hours a day!

Laura, I'm glad Liam was able to pitch! Too bad the team lost.

Ellen, I will have Jay in my prayers! I'd also like to hear about the "regular" food down there.

Marilyn that dinner sounds yummy!

Thanks to all of you for your support, prayers & love! You don't know how much it means to me to have all of you to lean on! :grouphug:

Special thanks to my friend Kathy! You are the glue that holds us all together!

Ugh! We had a terrible storm last night and now our Internet and cable are all screwed up. Thank goodness for the iPhone. How else could I keep in touch with ya'll.

Nan-I pushed the watermelon through a sieve. I knew there was a lot of liquid in watermelon, but holy cow! It took very little fruit to get a cup of liquid.

Not sure wfd tonight as it's my work night. There is a lot of ziti leftovers, so probably that.
