The What's For Dinner Thread - March '11 (recipe index in OP)

Marilyn- I used to put stale bread out for the birds, until one time I put out a hot dog roll. Then the seagulls came. They started fighting with the crows, I never realized how big seagulls are until I saw them next to the crows, they are twice the size! I don't put out stale bread anymore.

Luckily no problems with either of those birds in my neighborhood! We are close enough to the Chesapeake Bay to have seagulls but they seem to like hanging out in the Mall parking lot! :rotfl:

I'm thinking of having gnocchi with an grilled chicken and Alfredo like sauce tonight.

Sorry I missed posting yesterday. Things are starting to pick up around here. Liam had four baseball practices this week. Thankfully, my dad is around to help out with transportation!

Kathy -- Yay for Kyle! I am so glad he pitched well. It's too bad they ended up losing the game, but I am sure you all must have been thrilled anyway.

Oh my girls, have any of you tried Zumba?

I really should get back to doing that. I took a class most of last year. It is fun, and it is amazing how much of a workout it is.

I've been working hard this week getting our spare room cleaned out, so that I can turn it into a nursery for our soon to be grandson.

That's a good reason for cleaning! :cloud9:

At home the birds like to nest in the slats under the deck and in the vent for the dryer.

At our old house, it was always robins that nested under the porch near the dryer vent. We have a lot of birds at this house, including a woodpecker that is so loud it sounds like a jackhammer (well, okay, maybe not that loud, but loud enough to wake me up in the morning!)

Dinner last night was mutter paneer. Tonight is sesame noodles and stir-fried vegetables.

All that cleaning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ladies, i feel positively lazy next to all of you ;)

Last night I made a quick meat and veg pasta sauce with a green salad. Nola wanted to come by and visit while her Mommy painted glasses so dinner needed to be something I did nto need to watch. SHe called again to see if Rylee could come too.:rotfl2: Hmmmmmmmm....... Wonder if Mommy had something to do with that call :rotfl2:

DInner this evening will be out if I get my way. We have errands so maybe we will just pick something up. i have been craving McDonalds fish sandwiches:dance3:

Ellen – I’ve never tried Zumba but everyone I know who has loves it! I finally made it back to my pre-beta blocker weight since I've amped up my gym time. We love Phil too!

Aimee – That roasted shrimp dish looks amazing!

Sheryl – The onion tart looked so good! Wish I could convince Johnny that a meal doesn’t have to contain meat.:rolleyes1 That Alexis is just too cute! Is she still warming up to the idea of a new baby?

Glynis – How was your book club meeting?

Lauri D – Welcome back you traveling gypsy!!! We sure enjoyed meeting y’all!

Kyle will be leaving this afternoon for Normal, AL. They will play a weekend series against Alabama A&M. Hopefully he will get to pitch this weekend since his pitch count was so low on Wed!:yay:

WFD - Going out to our favorite spot tonight. We sit at the bar and the bartender really takes care of us.:cloud9:

Hey Girls! I am so behind (like I ever got caught up). I have no idea where the week went. I had the guy here fixing my nail pops, we had a friend for dinner Wednesday and baseball practice has started. Oh my! I need to get on a better schedule!

Not sure what dinner will be tonight but I made a really great lasagna, chicken and flank steak this past week.

We are going to NJ for Easter. I am sending my sister some homemade perogi and a cake that is made in Pittsburgh for my part (we always share in the cooking).

I loved hearing all of your bird stories. My parents fed the birds every day for probably 20+ years. I gave my Father a bird feeder for Xmas one year and it was the one they used (it is probably still there today). I have a feeder here and saw my first bird on there this past week.

The closing on my Mom's house was postponed until today. So that is another chapter that is closed. Thank you all for your kind words when I mentioned the sale last week.

I guess I am in a sentimental mood today. Today marks 2 years since my brother, Charles, passed away. You guys got me through his passing, along with my Mom's and brother, Jim's, and I love you for that. I remember the kind words that Nancy told me when Charles passed..."God only takes the really special people during Holy Week" and Ellen finally came out of lurking then too.

***
OK, enough sad babble...love you all!

Aimee, love all your pics and your blog!

Becky, as always...YUM!

You too Sheryl...yum! Yay on the nursery! So excited for all of you!

Robin, did you make those Larabars? Can you share the recipe?

Sheryl - I had to tell you about my dream last night.

Love it! :rotfl:

We ended up staying home last night. The Boy had soo much homework. I don't understand how in high school the projects have to be done in 1 night vs 1-2 wks in middle school:confused3

Oh boy, Andrew may never graduate High School!

Started back on WW yesterday and did pretty good. Had enough points left over that I got to have toast with peanut butter and jelly last night as my snack.

Good Luck! I really need to do something...I cant get motivated though. I have been doing the treadmill and drinking more water though...oh and eating yogurt and granola with flax seed mixed in for breakfast (Kat got me hooked on the yogurt in the AM).

You silly!! You married him 20 years ago. You met him about 30 years ago!!! Maybe its the whole "time flies when your having fun" thing.... :rotfl2:

I ended up cutting it thick and rendering the fat and then making a big pot of baked beans. I think I am the only one in the house that likes them though :confused3

I have a meeting for Relay for Life tonight, so we are having leftovers and then heading out in the rain :sad1:
/QUOTE]

That is too funny! Time sure does fly when you're having fun! ;) I LOVE baked beans but rarely make them since I am the only one that likes them. Now I am craving them!

Andrew's schools have never done RFL...it sounds like the kids always have fun doing it so I wish they would.

I don't mind the trumpet. Liam has one, although now that he is no longer in band, he rarely plays it. I am keeping it in the hope he will pick it up again. The recorder though...even when it's good, it's bad.

Andrew is still playing drums and percussion. Luckily he has soundless drums but I think he may stop the band in HS since he wants to play football.

Tonight we are having ricotta gnocchi and spinach gnocchi with chicken sausage. I have a few containers of ricotta that only cost me pennies, but now they are getting close to the sell by date so I need to use it up. Have a great day all!

I have always wanted to make Gnocchi. do you have a recipe you can share?

"Ode to Joy" but when they both played it, the song sounded like a funeral dirge! We still laugh over that today... it was definitely not joyful!:rotfl:

As mentioned my DD quit clarinet after 8th grade to pursue soccer and volleyball in HS. She eventually dropped v-ball and I think always had a bit of regret for quitting band. Her friends in band had a blast. She encourged DS to try HS band in 9th grade and he loves it. Band is his whole social world really, he is in so many extra music groups and they always have fun. He wanted to quit after middle school too but now is sooooo glad he didn't.

That is sort of the grown up equivalent of a kids snow day!

Worked this morning then took DS to a dr appt this afternoon. We stopped at the mall near that dr office so I could shop at a special candy store. I wanted to get something chocolate to put at each place on the table for easter dinner. I got these great eggs that are stuffed with something different, some milk chocolate some dark and wrapped in 6 different pastel colors. I think it will be fun for people to pick their spot by what filling they like best or swap them around.

WFDT = breakfast food! French toast, bacon, cut up citrus fruits.

So glad your son is enjoying himself. The band kids really do get to go on some great trips, etc. My Mom always put candy at the place settings for Easter. It was always the Russell Stover coconut nest with the jelly bean eggs...along with an Easter scratch off.

I think poor Minnie is going to have a heart attack one of these days, she does not do well with noise. Since she is so little I don't want to medicate her either. It never worked with my other dog.

Poor Minnie!
Hi, all! Sorry I didn't make it over here yesterday! It was run, run, run! Didn't help that Katie was home sick with a sore throat!

Dinner tonight is up in the air. Katie has her young women meeting at church, and Jacob has a merit badge class. I'm thinking we'll just do some kind of sandwich or wrap. Maybe we'll do Sheryl's po boy's! I always keep the fixin's on hand, as it's become a favorite of the family!

Aimee - I love your new blog! Looks really good!!!

Vic - our local cupcake bakery, the Sweet Tooth Fairy. They make wonderful cakebites in seasonal flavors. This months flavors are banana and peach and honey. Those are covered in milk, dark or white chocolate, and would look fun on the table! Thanks for giving me the idea!!!

I guess it is time to start thinking about Easter dinner.

I hope Katie is feeling better. Glynis, I have to tell you...I am amazed at how well you keep it all together with the kids. I cant keep up with Andrew and Thomas...I feel so overwhelmed lately.

Those cake bites sound great! There is a candy store here that is pretty well known that has free shipping a lot when you spend $29. The company is called Sarris if you ever want good chocolate. Their pecan clusters and peanut butter meltaways are the BEST!

Hope you had fun bowling! I always had fun when I was on a league.

I think I am going to get a Honey Baked ham and serve that for sandwiches along with some turkey as we have a few that won't eat ham. I have one (DD's roommate) who is vegetarian but will make a sandwich with guac or hummus instead of a meat then add the other fixings. I plan to make baked beans, scallop potatoes and fruit salad as well. Then my two bundt cakes for dessert. I know 2 cakes is over kill but again I like to give a choice (chocolate or lemon) then there will be extras to send home with my parents, my sister's family and the 2 college girls! :thumbsup2

Menu sounds great!

Took DS clothes shopping today at kohls, not our fav thing to do together. He drove me to a bunch of other errands to get driving practice so that was good. For a treat I told him we would do dinner out his choice. He picked Bar Louie and ordered potstickers for our appetizer and he had a cuban sandwich, DH ordered a loaded burger and I had the pear and blue cheese salad. It was fun to get out on a rainy night!

Sounds like a nice time!

I've been gradually uncluttering my house as part of spring cleaning.

I need to do some of that. You know its really bad when something falls out of almost every cabinet you have when it is opened!

Good morning! Kyle pitched his butt off last night!!!! He gave up a few hits in the first inning then settled down and threw four awesome innings.

Hooray!

Oh my girls, have any of you tried Zumba? Monday was my first class. It was a TOTAL blast but it kicked my fanny - let me tell you!!! .

I think I need to try that!

I don't know what's for dinner. My freezer stash has gotten a little out of hand so I'll find something from it. Have a great day all.

I have to get mine cleaned out too.

Hello everyone Ive been missing in action for the last month :rotfl:. Been gone for 3 out of the last 4 weeks. Life should always be like that. :lmao: I have been reading along on my phone but I'm just going to jump back in if you all dont mind.

Hey Girl! I heard you had a blast in NOLA! Glad you had a nice, long trip! Any trip report or restaurant reviews?

I'm really looking foward to dinner tomorrow. I'm making the general tso's chicken Aimee posted, fried rice, and dumplings. Hopefully at least one of those will come out well!

YUM! have you tried the orange chicken, veggie fried rice and pork dumplings from trader joe's? they are all really good.

OK, now Nancy has me wanting a Mickey Ds fish sandwich! I like burger King and Wendy's fish too!

Kat, Have fun! Good Luck Kyle!

Not the most exciting picture, but I wanted to chip in...

Looks delicious! Recipe, please?

Sorry I missed posting yesterday. Things are starting to pick up around here. Liam had four baseball practices this week. Thankfully, my dad is around to help out with transportation!

Thank goodness for grandparents!

DInner this evening will be out if I get my way. We have errands so maybe we will just pick something up. i have been craving McDonalds fish sandwiches:dance3:

Let me tell you a story about those fish sandwiches. I'm pretty anti fish filets that are pre-battered. I won't even eat fish at Long John Silvers, just the chicken. It always grossed me out for some reason. WELL. Last year, when I was in the hospital and not eating anything for several weeks, I kept craving Mickey D's fish sandwiches. It was during Lent, so of course the commercials were on constantly. I've never even had one before! It was almost an obsession (which always happens when I can't eat, I just fixate on it). When I finally got the clear to eat, I never did go and try it - assuming it'd be gross.

A few weeks ago, those dang Lent commercials got to me and I (secretly) got Mickey D's one night and took a chance on the sandwich. It was delicious! And I wished I had bought them last year when I was craving them so bad. I do think they are really small, though :confused3

And now I want one. Hmmm.

Lauren, good to "see" you - I'm so thankful the closing finally happened. Many  this week.

I have all these great recipes to try, and groceries in the fridge, and we keep making dinner plans with friends! Tonight and tomorrow night we have plans. I am going to cook lunch tomorrow, though, so a few things won't go bad.

Dinner is up to the 6 year old whose birthday we are celebrating!

/
thanks Aimee! I think the sandwiches are small too...dont even think to look up the calories. I had too much time on my hands during my isolation period so I did. What a mistake!
:rotfl:

Time to go to the bus stop!

later gaters!

Afternoon all!

Book club was fun! We had a great discussion on Pride and Prejudice. Mostly, I just enjoy the company of other women!!! It's nice to have "me" time.

Bowling this morning was awesome! I'm on a team with my SIL and my niece. We have a great time together. This year 2 of my other nieces joined the league and are on a team together. We've had a running rivalry with them since the beginning of the year. Before we started bowling today, they were 3 1/2 games ahead of us. We really wanted to pull ahead of them. Well, I don't know what bowling gods were looking down on me, but in the first game, I marked in every single frame! I ended up with a score of 182! That's my highest game EVER. We did really well on the other 2 games, and ended up winning all of them! We are now ahead of them for the first time this season!!!

I don't know about dinner tonight. Depends on Alan, I guess. He's leaving for NYC on Tuesday, so I'm hoping for a date night. However, he hasn't gotten out of bed, yet. He's really enjoying his day off, so we'll see what happens.

Ellen - I took Zumba for a year and loved it! Great fun and a fabulous workout. I really wanted to continue, but the instructor changed the class times, and I just can't make it work with my schedule. Oh well, hopefully in the summer!

Will this be your new "crack"? ;)

I have been avoiding anything from Mickey D's. I think they slip something in the oil. I can never say no to the fries or stop at just 1 or 2.:rolleyes1

WFD is pancakes with bacon.

Lauren I am glad to see you back posting. I remember selling my grandparents house it was a mixed thing. I was sorry to see the house go but glad someone was going to have many happy memories there.

Kathy I am glad Kyle is doing well.:thumbsup2 I hope he gets more pitching time.

Dinner was ....................................FIllet o Fish!

:rotfl:

Dinner for me tonight will be KFC! I broke had already broken my Lent thing. :rolleyes1 Too much going what with my DN's swim meet and my college visit roadtrip and I am going next weekend to visit my new nephew.

Tonight has been the only other time I have had fast food other than that. I was really good earlier this week and didn't get anything when I had to take my mother to McD's for a Fillet O Fish after she had a cataract removed. :rotfl:

And on top of that I just got home and realized I have no half and half or milk in the house. :headache:

Bowling this morning was awesome!

I'm so jealous of you and your bowling league! We were going to try and create a team with another couple but evidently totally missed the deadlines to sign up by. Plus, we weren't sure we could commitment to a weekly time. I am AWFUL at bowling - like seriously awful - but wanted to just do it for social reasons. And to wear a cool bowling shirt.

Will this be your new "crack"? ;)

 Well, liking them has increased my Mickey D's visits for the iced coffee... it's certainly not helping my addiction!

Dinner was ....................................FIllet o Fish!

Wonder if Mommy had something to do with that call :rotfl2:

I'm sure Nola just thought on her own she should call you and then think to bring along little sis...

You people are cracking me up about the filet o fish. While I admit that I used to crave the McChicken, or whatever it is called, I have never had a filet o fish.

Kyle will be leaving this afternoon for Normal, AL.

Good luck to him and the team! Enjoy your night out!

Lauren -- Good to hear from you! I know this has been an emotional time for you. Is Andrew looking forward to baseball? Is he in Babe Ruth now? I'm so confused about what happens next year after Little League.

Robin -- Those larabars look so good!

Dinner is up to the 6 year old whose birthday we are celebrating!

Happy birthday six!

Glynis -- Congrats on the bowling score! I hope you got your date night.

Lauri -- Welcome back! Three weeks of vacation sounds pretty sweet.

I did get my date night!!! Alan and I tried a new barbecue place. It was really good! I had a smokehouse salad, which was a basic salad, but with chopped brisket on top. On top of the brisket were french fried onion strings. So yummy! I added a little barbecue sauce to the ranch dressing, and it was delicious!!! Nice to find another place we like!!!

After dinner, we drove up the canyon that is behind our house. There's still a ton of snow up there, so it was kind of like driving through a Christmas special. However, it was lovely! I just wish we didn't have that much snow in April!!! We're getting a little anxious about the runoff! The ground is so saturated, we may just have some flooding.

Regarding McD's... I really have to exercise willpower to stay away! The fries are my downfall! I love them!!! That's my crack! Our local McDonald's is now advertising a double Fillet o Fish. That's right, ladies, 2 fish fillets on one sandwich. That might be worth trying, but I really don't think I could handle it. As it is, one does me in!

Hey Glynis ~ how many are in your book club? A friend and I want to start one and are discussing how many we should invite.

Do y'all meet once a month?

Hey Glynis ~ how many are in your book club? A friend and I want to start one and are discussing how many we should invite.

Do y'all meet once a month?

We have about 12 in our club. However, not all of them come every month. On average we have about 7-8 come each month.

We first met together as a group to "lay the ground rules" for our club. We decided to meet once a month, as that would give plenty of time for everyone to get hold of a copy of the book and read it. One of our main rules is that not everyone has to love, or even like, all of the books. If you are offended by something in a book, feel free to stop reading. We've saved a lot of headaches with that rule!

On our first meeting, we were all asked to bring a list of 5 books we wanted to put on a list. We merged the lists, and gave everyone 3 votes. The top vote getter was the book we started with. Then we voted again, for the month following. We try to stay 2 months ahead, as some books take longer to get than others. So, for instance, we met last night, and already knew that the book for May's meeting would be "The Graveyard Book", but voted on June's book (The King's Speech).

Goodies are optional in our meetings! We really don't want it to become a one upmanship thing. We would rather have someone open a bag of M&M's than feel like they couldn't participate because they couldn't bring in a dozen gourmet cupcakes, etc.

Oh, yes, our iron clad rule is that we meet on the first Thursday of each month. Knowing that it's the same day each month makes it easier for everyone to schedule it in. Sometimes things happen and not everyone can make it, but that's ok.

I became the "secretary" for the group, so I keep the list, print it out and take it for voting each month. I also email all the ladies after each meeting and let them know they were missed, or that we were glad to see them. I let them know where the next meeting will be and give them a reminder a to the title of the book. I also let them know what the next book will be so they can be looking forward to it. The Monday before our meetings, I send out an email reminder that book club is coming up. Easy, peasy!

I've said it before, but it bears repeating... my book club is a life saver! It's a place to gather with women of similar age, and interests without spouses or children. We decompress together, and really have had some great discussions. I don't know what I'd do without my club! It's also neat to see what kinds of books the different ladies put on the list. I've been exposed to books that I would never have chosen for myself.

If you have any other questions, let me know. As you can see, I'm always glad to share.

Awesome, Glynis, thanks! I sent your info to my friend as well. I was guessing 10-12 due to people not being able to come each time, that way there are still enough to have a grouping.

Good Saturday Morning!

Glynis- I am so glad you got your date! Now about the fish sandwich............I ate two! They shrunk ;)

Marilyn- you are wicked busy lately!

Laura- Not evet had FOF???????????? My other favorite is Friendly's Fish-ama-jig

I am going to a vendor fair with Welby. I have my BeautiControl and she is brnging her SPring line of glasses and bath products. Wish us luck!
