The What's For Dinner Thread - March '11 (recipe index in OP)

Hi everyone! Just a quick fly-by. I read thru the week's messages - you all have been busy!!

I did finally get the rest of my papers graded Wednesday night, and I have been feeling under the weather. So I haven't been online too much this week other than work. I have a good bit of pain on my right side and the dr thought it was my appendix. So I had a CT scan and it isn't my appendix (good), but they aren't sure yet what it is. So I see a surgeon Tuesday about having a biopsy or something.... :confused3 I am trying not to borrow trouble, but any prayers would be appreciated.

Oh no! I'm sorry you're having such pain  I am glad it's not your appendix, but sorry that another answer wasn't found in the process. Keep us posted on how things go Tuesday. And take it easy this weekend!!

Glynis - do y'all prepare discussion questions ahead of time, or how do y'all facilitate conversation? Perhaps that's a dumb question... I assume that with some books, conversation is natural but I wonder if others require a bit more prompting.

So I haven't been cooking much either. Tonight we had beef tips and gravy over noodles and a salad. I was happy today to find some Mullen's French dressing -- my dad loved that stuff and I ate it as a kid, and can't find it near me. But I got 2 big bottles today while in my old stomping grounds.

Tomorrow we're having New York Strips on the grill, steak fries, veggie, and salad.

Hope to be online more this week...
Julie

Prayers being said for you, Julie! I hope it's nothing! Take it easy, ok???

Your dinner tonight sounded wonderful! We just pieced around and I'm still hungry!

Not a dumb question, at all! Whoever is hosting is responsible for leading the discussion. Most of the time you can find discussion questions for most books online. If we can't find them online, we'll just start a generic line of questioning such as: What character did you like most and why? Things of that nature. It usually sparks a discussion. As we got going, though, we found that we all had opinions about the books, and we weren't afraid to share them. Sometimes it really helps if you have someone who really loved the book, and someone who really didn't. That makes for interesting discussions.

Julie Sorry you are having such pain. The last time I had a mysterious pain in my side it was kidney stones. I hope the doctors find a reason for the pain very soon. I will send my prayers.

It was such a beautiful day yesterday. I hope today is uneventful(no storms) Those poor people in Iowa. This has been a wild year for weather, I wonder if someone is angry with all of us.

WFD is spicy pork tenderlion not sure of the sides yet.

Julie- I hope that your pain leaves quickly!

Marilyn- I hear you onthe parents. When Deb was in All Stars I was embarrassed to be sitting in the stands one game. THese were 12 YO girls and our parents were trying to shake the pitcher :sad2: The things they were yelling at little girls to make them miss their marks.

FredinFL – Welcome!

Lauri D – I look forward to seeing you at F&W in October!

Nan – I’m so happy to hear how successful Welby was!

Laura – I hope Beck is feeling better today. Congrats to Liam on doing so well in the scrimmage!:cheer2:

Marilyn – The stories I could have told about the parents during baseball. It seems like there was always one or two every single season.:sad2:

Julie – I will keep you in my prayers, hoping it’s nothing major. Take it easy and keep us posted.

WFD - Julie's pork roast, scallion sweet potatoes, baked mac & cheese and sauteed spinach.

Bethany and Glynis -- I recently read The Help. That would be an excellent book-club book. Good luck, Bethany, getting something started!

Julie -- I hope you are feeling better soon.

Marilyn -- It really angers me when the parents get so involved and are mean to the kids. What kind of person does that?? Our town makes the parents sign a contract saying that they will be supportive, they won't deride the other team for any reason, and they won't yell at their own kids. It is really sad that youth sports has come to this.

Kat -- Beck is still feeling pretty awful. It is one nasty bug she managed to get.

Dinner today was grilled halibut with a mango salsa, roasted asparagus, sauteed zucchini and summer squash, and an oven roasted potato dish. Mom cooked today since Beck is out of commission. Everything was very good.

Laura - Please tell Becky that we are thinking of her and miss her. Hopefully she'll be feeling better tomorrow.

Julie - The pork roast was great! I did it in the crock pot and added sliced onions & mushrooms. The A-1 makes a great gravy!!!!!:thumbsup2

Thanks! So I realized that this library's website only lists ONE copy of the book as the default and you have to click another button to see if they have other copies. :confused3 Glad I realized that though! :upsidedow Now I need to look and see if the other books are at my local branch. I might stop there tomorrow after work.

Awesome, thanks! I appreciate all your help!

I loved The Help, too. Evidently it's being made into a movie!

I just started Water for Elephants last night and am completely enthralled.

Our evening didn't go the way we expected; I fell asleep and didn't get up until 6pm and we had to 1)help my mom move some furniture and 2)rebuild our fence - both before it got dark. SO! My plans for enchiladas were sacrificed. I picked up Panda Express instead and am going to make the enchiladas tonight for DH to cook through tomorrow night since I have a meeting.

I'm going to have to request a hold for both of those books; they are all either checked out, being held, or lost.

I hope Becky feels better soon!

Julie- my sis had really bad pain that they thought was her apendix, turned out it was an ovarian cyst.

Of all the things I had to do today I only accomplished 1 and a half. The one was to clean some Barbies I am giving away and the half was to wash the blankets from my bed, they didn't make it into the dryer yet. :sad2:

I have lots to do this week and need to get it together.

Hi everyone! I had a wonderful time in California and came home late Wednesday evening. I planned to catch up this weekend here but had some family stuff to do for Kenny's family. His other BIL was released from the hospital Saturday morning so I had both of their girls over to give BIL and SIL a chance to settle in and meet with the home nurse without their kids underfoot.

A huge congrats to Sheryl and Angelina! I saw the pics on fb and what a precious baby!

I've read back but that took over an hour so I guess I have to get to work now. Hopefully I will be back later today.

Hello! I am still sick  so have no food to share with you all. I weighed myself this morning and I have lost 10 lbs. since Thursday! Time for this bug to go away!

Bethany, Water for Elephants is a wonderful book. I have read it three times.

Nancy, I am glad you and Welby had a good time at the fair.

Julie, I hope you are feeling better today.

WFD: probably nothing!!

Hi All! Thank you for your thoughts and good wishes the other day. You guys are great!

WFD: Chicken ala King over rice...I have the chicken precooked and this is easy since we have to run out and get Andrew's uniform tonight.

Becky, Wow, 10 lbs! I am so sorry that you are feeling so awful. I hope you feel better really soon.

Julie, I hope all goes well tomorrow. Good thoughts and wishes.

Marilyn, I leave things in the washer all the time. Ugh...I hate when I do that. I know what you mean about parents. Some of these parents I have seen over the years should be shot.

Nancy, so glad you and Welby had a good show. I have never seen the products that you are a rep for. I have to check them out.

Kat, How did the team do this weekend?

Gretchen, so glad you had a great trip! And also that your BIL is out of the hospital. Good thoughts continue.

I think I missed some stuff but I have to go bring "Meat" up for his nap. Yeah, a new knick name for T! My little character!

Hope everyone is having a great day~!

Augh, I'm so sorry it's not just a 24 hour bug!

I made chicken enchiladas at 11pm last night and put it in the fridge before baking. DH can throw it in the oven when he gets home so we'll have dinner. It's my first time making a traditional red enchilada sauce (instead of just popping open a can!) so I hope it's worth it! It tasted great last night when I was making it.

I have a meeting tonight so I'll eat enchiladas when I get in.

WFDT = Julie's A-1 Pork Roast! Pork roasts were on sale this week so i got a 3 lb'er for just $5.95!! I think we can easily get 2 dinners out of that. I also bought corn on the cob and strawberries which were on sale as well. So a good dinner ahead.

Didn't post over the weekend because I worked both Sat and Sun at the library. It is much more physical work than I had imagined so I was pretty tired both days. Today I only worked a four hour shift so not so tired. I really like my co-workers and think this will turn out to have been the right move for me. :thumbsup2

Yesterday was almost 80 here! I understand there was some wicked weather else where, hope everyone is ok today.

 Feel better.

Dinner tonight is my usual Monday night salmon and I'll have some roasted brussell sprouts and maybe cous cous with it.

 Cute!

This week is crazy. Today is the only afternoon we are home until Friday. Tomorrow the kids have dentist appointments, Liam has a baseball practice and his science fair is tomorrow evening. Wednesday is skating and another baseball scrimmage. Thursday is skating and a baseball practice. I have no idea what we are going to manage to eat. Tonight I am making quesadillas because Liam has been asking for them for two weeks. His will have black beans and cheese and mine will have chicken, roasted red peppers, onions and cheese. Caili will have the chicken and probably a salad.

I apologize in advance if I disappear for a couple days!
