The What's For Dinner Thread - March '11 (recipe index in OP)

Lindsay - Take your time, we all understand this is a large undertaking! That was one silly dream. :lmao:

Janice - wish Alex a happy birthday from me!

Aimee - those ribs sound really interesting, but I'm not a fan of chipotles and it sounds like there's a lot.

Kat - single digit dance! How cool is that?

Ellen have fun with the girls!

Becky - I love linguini & clams

Brandi - Shepard's pie sounds great and that venison dish too! I knew you atewell on vacation but had no idea you did at home as well!

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Me? I'm sitting in the shade poolside at the GCH waiting for my spa appt.
WFD? Steak salad and chips with queso.
Alison, we try.... to eat well that is, we cook about 5 days out of the week, and clean out the fridge the other two nights...
Have fun getting your massage... enjoy dinner.:woohoo:
Hey y'all, thanks for all the good thoughts, kind words and prayers. I feel blessed to have you all as friends. I have not had time to read back so I can only say that I think of you all daily and hope all is well with everyone.:grouphug:
Since it's almost time to start a new thread I decided to turn the thread back over to the originator, Lindsay, and she agreed.:goodvibes
.
Kat- :hug::hug::hug:
Lindsay- thanks for helping Kat out with the new thread!
Glynis- I just wanted to tell you my washer story. Last year mine kicked the bucket, it was only 10 years old. I had my heart set on an LG Tron but was way too cheap to buy a new one. Anyway, Buddy and I had a discussion and he wanted me to buy a new on, but he was paralyzed over the cost of what I wanted. I got a used one at a local store and have not had one issue with it. It is an LG Tron, came with a warrantee (SP) and was $400. I have to replace my dryer and I am going tot he same store. I will wait until I can get the one I want at the cost I want. Look at Craigslist and see what turns up. My washer was a floor model.
Janice- Happy Birthday Alex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marisa- I thought of you when I saw Aimee's Shrimp and Grits
I have a cold so last night Buddy cooked dinner. Eggs and toast. I never give up my kitchen so this was huge,
We went out to dinner Sunday with Donny and Anna. They took us to J Gilbert's, a southwestern steakhouse. Dinner was delicious!
Tonight is a baked spaghetti and fresh Italian bread.
Tomorrow might be pot roast. Timmy will be here for dinenr so I want something yummy, he is going back out to sea and may not be here for his birthday.
I soaked the backstrap in Apple juice, and then wrapped it in bacon with BBQ sauce and then grilled it...
I have no idea what backstrap is. But that looks dang good.
Glynis, so glad Katie had a good experience!
DH was off today, but I worked. Well, sorta. I didn't work in the office long so I could spend more time with him. Now I'm working on all the stuff I should have done in the office :laughing:
I made shrimp and grits tonight, very good! I'll post that and the ribs next.
Those RIBS! I'm dyyyying.
They're on my pinterest list. :rolleyes1 :lmao:
Tuesday night over here. Back to work today and I wished I was still on staycay! Still, the first day is over....hopefully I'll get mentally into gear and work mode.
Dinner was baked jacket potato with all the trimmings.
Everyone's food porn looks great!
Have a good Tuesday everyone.
The first day back is always hard. Hope you had a good night's sleep!
Hey guys! I am trying my best to get the new thread going. Something weird is going on with my internet and it's going slow. Hopefully it will be done this morning. Again, we are getting rid of our DSL this weekend and switching to a cable modem. Hopefully it will solve these problems. In the meantime, UGH!!!
Today I am making chili, per my husband's request. We will have cornbread to go with it. (Crap, I just realized I forgot to get sour cream for mine. UGH!) Also, I am trying my hand at homemade bread today. I posted about this over the weekend and the DIS ate my post so I thought I would try later. Anyway, I saw it on Barefoot Contessa (my favorite) and it looked like something I could do without messing up. I haven't made bread since I was a kid though (church women's night kind of thing) so let's see how this goes.
Ok, I have to share the dream I had with you guys. In the episode that Ina's making the bread, after she kneads it and forms it into a ball, she pats it and says, "There! Just like a baby's bottom." Well, over the weekend I was dreaming that I was making this bread and I kept yelling at the dough "You don't look like a baby's bottom! What's wrong with you?!" LOL!
Off to finish my coffee and work on the new thread :)
Thank you for taking on the next thread.
I saw you posting on FB. How'd the bread come out?
And :lmao: at the dream.
Doing the 9 day dance, woohoo!!!!:cool1::banana::yay:
Whooohoooo! Can I go?
Today is Mr A's birthday
WFD is Italian beef in the crockpot and the Caramel Praline Cheesecake.
It took all my strength to leave the cheesecake alone last night. All I have to do tonight is make the caramel chocolate sauce. Gees! I am going to be so tired tonight after all this cooking. :rolleyes1 This kid makes tough demands for dinner. :laughing:
Happy birthday Mr. A!!
Jen ~ :rotfl2: Doug did NOT go to Zumba :rotfl2: How is the tooth feeling?
Cloudy and drizzly day here today. Almost looks like early evening out. Fall is here. I was driving home last night from Ethan's football game at 7:30 and it was dark out. I really don't like it when it gets dark so early and in a couple of weeks it will be worse. Oh well it is what it is - but I can still complain.
I have bunko tonight. We always have so much fun - I can't wait to see the girls.
WFDT ~ Meatloaf (in the crockpot - we shall see how this goes it's my first time trying it in the crock), crash potatoes, asperagus and sliced peaches.
Make it a great day everyone.
Ugh about the custodian.
And the tooth is better. Thank you for asking.
I've been to bunko! Love it. We call it drunko. :rolleyes1
:wave2:
Afternoon everyone - I asked DH what he wanted this week for dinner and the only thing he said he wanted was Shepard's Pie, i swear we just had this before F&WF, oh well. easy enough...
So dinner tonight is Shepard's Pie....
Recipe?
Well, the time has come, my friends, to invest in a new washing machine. After being gone for 4 days, my laundry pile had really turned into Mount Washmore, and I was determined to tackle it yesterday. I got a load of towels going, and starting sorting through the rest of the laundry. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do anything more. My washer filled with water, but then it stopped. It won't agitate, it won't spin, and it won't drain. I guess I shouldn't be surprised... it's over 14 years old, but I was really hoping it would hold out for a while longer. I spent today at my sister's house, washing everything, and now, I'm shuffling those loads through my dryer. FRUSTRATING!!! Alan is using his breaks at work to look for a new machine. Unfortunately, he is wanting to pay what we paid for this one 14 years ago, and that ain't about to happen! He was honestly shocked to see that a new washing machine (not even a large capacity, like we really need) is 500 dollars. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with.
Anyway, dinner will most likely be pasta and red sauce. I'll add some meat to it if I get a chance to run to the store. We'll see. I have to babysit my destructive niece and nephew this afternoon/evening, and I really hate to leave them in my house without me here!
Oy. Let us know how your washing machine hunt goes. :hug:
Me? I'm sitting in the shade poolside at the GCH waiting for my spa appt.
WFD? Steak salad and chips with queso.
Is it just you or is Fran with ya' too?
And dinner sounds loverly!
I have a cold so last night Buddy cooked dinner. Eggs and toast. I never give up my kitchen so this was huge,
We went out to dinner Sunday with Donny and Anna. They took us to J Gilbert's, a southwestern steakhouse. Dinner was delicious!
Feel better!
Tuesday's over. :goodvibes
Tonight's dinner was green chile hominy with chorizo casserole and ham steaks. This was a redo of the dinner we had last week, it was so good we had to do it again! :lmao::lmao:
Hope everyone has a great Wednesday tomorrow. :hug:
I have no idea what backstrap is. But that looks dang good.
Recipe?
backstrap is deer filet Mignon....
Shepard's Pie...
Ingredients
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
1 pound lean ground turkey
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup green beans
1 cup tomatoes, diced
2 potatoes, cooked and mashed
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Coat a 2 quart casserole dish with cooking oil.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook onion in oil for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the ground turkey and basil, and cook and stir for 5 more minutes. Mix in the garlic, green beans, and tomatoes, and simmer for 5 minutes. Transfer turkey mixture to prepared dish.
In a mixing bowl, mix together the mashed potatoes, egg, and water. Spread evenly over meat mixture.
Bake in a preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until potatoes start to brown on top. Sprinkle with cheese, and continue cooking for 5 minutes.
Hope everyone has a great Wednesday tomorrow. :hug:
I fly out tomorrow for work so David is on his own...
The green chili Hominy with chiroizo sounds wonderful!
Quick drop in...
Janice -- Happy Birthday to A! The cheesecake sounds delicious!
Glynis -- Congratulations to Katie! Good luck with the washing machine.
Kat -- You must be getting so excited. I know I would be.
Lindsay -- Thanks for taking charge of the thread again. And thanks to Kat for taking such good care of it for so long.
Ellen -- I miss zumba. I can never find a class that fits into my schedule.
Me? I'm sitting in the shade poolside at the GCH waiting for my spa appt.
Jealous! Enjoy.
Nancy -- I hope you feel better.
Brandi -- Welcome back!
Dinner here was mushroom pizza. I think Liam had six slices. He definitely is starting on the growing boy appetite.
Laura- Portions are going up here too. I used to bring leftovers for lunch but now there aren't any.
dgbg-I haven't made shephard's pie in months, we love it. I think I'll have to make it soon.
Jen- I've never had hominey, except as grits, you make is sound so good I'll have to give it a try.
Nancy- Hope your feeling better.
Becky- I don't think you could have asked for better weather. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the cape, but I spent some time over the weekend at Great Island in Wellfleet- it was stunning. Next time you come up make sure you go to the Atlantic Spice Company in Truro if you haven't been.
Ellen- Hi!
Aimee- Hope your feeling well.
I know I am so far behind here! I have three weeks of work left, I'm looking foward to being able to get here on a more regular basis.
Last night I made Princess' pad thai (thanks for the recipe!), so tasty and easy. Not sure on dinner tonight buy I'm pretty sure it will involve chicken.
Janice – Mr. A requested such a nice birthday meal, I hope he enjoyed it!
Becky – I’m glad y’all had such a nice weekend and can’t wait to see the pics. The DIS is running VERY slow.:headache:
Glynis – Sorry to hear about the washing machine, I had to chuckle at Alan trying to find one that costs what the old one did.
Nan – The last time I gave my kitchen up to Johnny was the last time…burnt scrambled eggs and burnt toast.:sad2:
Laura – It won’t be long and Liam will be eating you out of house and home!
I have to say a special thanks to those of you who reached out to contact me during this difficult time we’re having. You know who you are and I can’t thank you enough.:grouphug:
I am very excited about this trip, don’t think I’ve ever needed one so bad.:goodvibes
WFD - Canadian bacon & Swiss omelets, hash browns, maple bacon and biscuits.
Yikes, Kathy I can't believe I fogot you when you've been on my mind so much. You've become such a part of our daily lives keeping track of all of us and I fogot to tell you I've been thinking of you. I hope whatever is going on is a bump in the road that your able to get over. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and wishing you the most amazing vacation for such an amazing person.
Good morning! I feel in my bones that it WILL actually be a good morning! Alan had a washing machine delivered late last evening!!! It's a Maytag front loading machine, and really, that's all I know about it, so far. Alan will install it today (he gets home from work around 11:00 a.m.), after he picks up a water pan to put under it, and a couple of other things, as well. I'm just so thrilled I don't have to haul dirty clothes to someone else's washing machine again! That really wasn't very fun!!!
Dinner tonight will be a cheesy potato corn chowder. I need to clean out my vegetable drawer, so that seems to fit the bill. I'll make some biscuits to go along with it, and we're all set. I'm sure that Alan will want some "meat" to go with it, so I'll either make a sandwich to go along, or else chop up some ham to go in the chowder.
Did I mention that I get to go to Las Vegas Sunday through Wednesday? Alan is covering the GOP debate for work, and asked me to go to keep him company on the drive. The station is flying the reporter down, and I'll drive with Alan! I'm really excited!! Not about the debate, but about the possibility of just relaxing by a pool with a good book! Could be kind of awesome! I'm a bit ashamed that I feel so excited about it, considering that I just got back from a trip without kids, but oh well!!!
Kat - I'm so excited for your trip!!! I can't wait to hear all about it! I know you need this, and I hope it becomes all that you've hoped for!
Janice - I think it was you who mentioned Italian beef in the crock pot. I'd love a recipe for that, if you haven't already posted it. If so, just tell me and I'll start searching!
Have a great day, my friends! I plan on it!
I will post the recipe I used yesterday when I get home. On the last thread I posted a similar recipe. I am not sure which one I like better. :confused3 Especially since I nanatize just about everything.:laughing:
Marisa ~ "little scarecrows" .......sounds so cute. Care to share?
I will take a picture tonight. A few years ago at the BIG E we found a scarecrow with a Jack Skellington face. We bought him for outside next to our front steps. This year, the same lady was selling small ones. They are about 18 inches tall and are so cute! We asked her to make us reverse Jack Skellington ones. So they would have black faces with white eyes and mouth. Jeff is supposed to put them in the ground today. Its on his "honey do" list :rotfl2:
Glynis: Sorry about the washer, but good thing you got a new one quickly!! I have a real old washer and dryer and just keeping my fingers crossed that it lives a little longer!
Kat: I think about you all the time, I hope everything is ok :hug:
Last night we were so busy, that we skipped water aerobics. I ended up just picking up the scarecrows, going to Welbys, Nans, open house and book fair, then home. I didnt have the energy to go to water aerobics.... :lmao:
I did decorate for Halloween though, so that's one more thing done!
We are going to Nan's for dinner tonight to see Timmy, so WFD is whatever Nan makes!!!:banana::yay::woohoo:
Have a great day everyone!
Mount Washmore
:rotfl::rotfl:
i am glad you got a new machine. I hope you like it once it is installed.
Becky- I don't think you could have asked for better weather. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the cape, but I spent some time over the weekend at Great Island in Wellfleet- it was stunning. Next time you come up make sure you go to the Atlantic Spice Company in Truro if you haven't been.
We did spend some time in Wellfleet, but I am not familiar with Great Island. We hiked all but one of the National Park trails in Wellfleet, as well as all the trails in Eastham. Thanks for the spice company recommend. I'll check it out next time we are out there.
I am very excited about this trip, don’t think I’ve ever needed one so bad.:goodvibes
Kathy, you have been on my mind this week. I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing vacation. Drink a kir royale for me!
Glynis, have fun in Las Vegas! I have never been there.
WFD: no idea. I have a bunch of weird ingredients in the house and am trying to think of some way to use them up.
Good morning girlfriends,
Glynis ~ YEA for the new washing machine.
Vegas BABY!!!! Oh the fun you will have. Just saying!!
Fran ~ Well, are you all pretty now after your spa doings? I love when I pamper myself.
Becky ~ I love Cape Cod. Looking forward to your pictures.
Nan ~ I sure hope you are feeling better. Enjoy your evening with your family.
Jen ~ At Bunco we do have wine usually but last night I had my very first Colorado Bull Dog with homemade Kulaha. Oh so yummy!! :cool1:
Brandi ~ Thanks for the Shepherd's Pie recipe - that is some definate comfort food.
Safe travels my friend.
Laura ~ Good to see you. You had better start saving right now - because the grocery bill will NOT get ANY cheaper. :laughing:
Lindsay ~ Thanks for helping with the thread. We all appreciate it.
Robin ~ Wow, just 3 weeks left. It seems like you just started. I do want you to know how jealous of you I am. You really do live in God's country.
Kat ~ Right back at'cha :hug: Your dinner sounds so darn good. I wish I was close enough, I might just invite myself over. I am drooling!!:lmao:
Marisa ~ Oh I can't wait to see some pictures. Those scarecrows sound so cute. Are you lining your walk with them?
Enjoy dinner with the family tonight.
Wow, yesterday is a day I hope not to repeat very soon. Busy, busy, busy. But it sure made the day go fast.
I got my flu shot yesterday after work - HAVE YOU ALL GOTTEN YOURS? IF NOT GO AND GET IT!!!
WFDT ~ It's date night, then choir. So probably either a hot beef sandwich or a chicken salad. Either/or I will decide when I get there.
Make it a great day everyone.
Good afternoon All! I am feeling better today!
Kat- I am glad to see you back but you take it easy! My stovetop was a mess :sad2:
Glynis- Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on the washer. i was lost when mine was broken and there was only Buddy and me to worry about. Have a fun get-away! I agree about the convention. I don't like any of the candidates on either side. I am not going to be fun when I get the political calls :headache:
Janice- Love that you Nanatize! I cannot cook unless I do.
PIO- Hope that your day back to work was not too hard
Robin- I am a tad jealous that you live on the Cape. I would not like the summer traffic but the fall...............:goodvibes
Ellen- Date night :cloud9: Buddy's idea of date night would be grinders and soda on the sofa :lmao: I won't complain becasue pretty soon it will be COLD and my idea of date night is wine and cheese and crackers in front of the fireplace ;)
Laura-Yikes! I remember when we had Buddy's nephew move in with us. We went from one family pack of meat to two. 2 gallons of milk a day. I gave up on cereal and let's not even start to figure out how many packages of cookies we went through in a week. He worked in a gym and was taking weight training and swimming in school :dance3:
Jen- I am glad that your tooth is finally getting better. You have been in pain too long
Aimee- how are you feeling?
Dinner is a New England boiled dinner with a shoulder, rutabaga and carrots. I also have Brussels sprouts instead of cabbage, Rye bread and butter.
Dessert is Janice's Snickerdoodle cake and a chocolate cherry bundt cake. Janice- was the frosting a little sugary? I creamed the brown sugar and butter but I still find little sugar crystals. I did not know if it was supposed to be like that because of the sugar on top of the cookies or if I just did not cream the butter and sugar long enough.
MArisa-my pot.........
Nan now that you mention i used bakers sugar which is like a bar sugar (fine grains) I found it a little too sweet for my taste but Mr A loved it. I am fussy about my butter cream. I think next time I will use my fav buttercream recipe and just nantize.:thumbsup2 I am not sure if I ever posted that buttercream but it is not a fast recipe you have to cook it and freeze it but it is really good and not overly sweet and oily.
Jan- it is a little sweet but I am hoping that the cake will offset it. I do think that I did nto cream my sugar long enough but it is going to have to do
I am back with pictures!!! I took pictures of my outdoor fall decorations!!
Here is my gnome bobble-head solar light:
Good evening everyone! Tomorrow's already Thursday.
Today the doggies got groomed and they're looking so cute. :love: Love clean doggies that I don't have to bathe myself. :lmao:
Work was good. Hope everyone here is good as well!
Tonight's dinner is peanut butter noodles. If it's good, I'll come post the recipe!
