The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

So the school wants them to show what they want to be when they grow up as long as it is within the framework that the teachers have chosen to be acceptable???????? Sheryl, I would be less than thrilled if my child spirits were dampened at 7 for goodness sakes!:mad:

I should not be laughing but :lmao::lmao:. He wanted to call the police because you were mean? :rotfl:Kady was not even speaking to me this morning when she trounced out of the car, I would have been turned in this morning as well

I agree with you on the school thing. It's ridiculous to make the kids "decide" what they want to be according to the teacher's perameters! I hate that!

I was laughing at the Abraham Lincoln battle, too! Katie used to scream that I was the meanest mom EVER! I told her "then I'm doing my job right!" She's also told me that I treat her just like Cinderella.

My favorite though was a trick I learned as a teacher. Whenever you tell your child to do something and they say, "that's not fair!", just look calmly at them and say, "I know." That's it. It really takes the wind out of their sails, since you are agreeing with them, and not giving them a battle. It was always funny to watch seniors in high school try to come up with a retort to that!

Laura, I'm really glad Liam didn't have you arrested for being a mean Mom! :rotfl2: That is funny! I love that Caili is going kick Liam out & replace him with bunnies!

Glynis, Alexis is a very easy child, but responsibility is going to be her downfall. What makes matters worse, is that the school things need to be here some days & at her house on others. Alexis is asleep when Chris brings her to me in the morning, so all the school paraphanalia toting has to be Chris's responsibility.

I guess we could have just ignored the instructions & sent her to school in her Hannah Montana outfit and her gigantic chef's hat! But if the teacher even mentioned that she didn't follow diriections, oh the tears would flow! She is easy but oh so emotional! I think what made it worse was that she felt like she was actually making the decision right now about the rest of her life! Even though I kept telling her she had a lot of time before she had to choose a career. She also kept asking which careers earned a lot of money. She said she had to make a lot of money because she wants a house with stairs! I wonder if she thinks we are poor because we have a one story house?

Well, I guess it's time for me to ask for some prayers as well. I just got an email from my mom saying that her sister has been having some issues. She's been in a lot of pain and has lost 20lbs. She had some blood work and an upper GI done yesterday and from what my mom said the results are troubling. My mom's other sister is a breast cancer surviovor and her dad died of lung cancer, so I know she's thinking the worst. Please send some prayers out to my mom and her sister if you have some to spare.

:hug:Adding her to our prayer list.

Kathy, do they sell chilled Rosa at the Italy pavillion? If you are going to be at EPCOT before dinner, maybe you could pick it up there?

This will be our arrival day and we weren't planning on using a park ticket so I'll just buy it at DTD and store it in Sheryl's frig. Thanks for the suggestion!!

Sheryl- That's really funny because when I was litttle I thought we had a small house because it was only one floor. Now that I have been back to that house after a number of years, it's huge. I live in a one floor house, with plans for an upstairs and my daughter is really pushing to have her room upstairs. She's not going to, that's where my room will be, but she can try. She also wants the dog and cat to each have their own room. To bad zoning rules only allow us to have a 2 bedroom house, the cat and dog are out of luck.

So are all of you telling me that my sweet little daughter who never does anything wrong, other than hug the dog to tight, is going to start giving me trouble? I have the easiest kid in the world, and I'm in for a real shock the first time she talks back.

Gretchen, I'm so sorry about your Dad. Please know there is light at the end of the tunnel. My friend Paula was diagnoised 2 times with lung cancer & the doctors we not hopeful to say the least. Last year I honored her at my gala for her strength & determination. She used Eastern & Western medicine & is healthy & thriving. She would be more that happy to speak to you. She truly is a miracle:goodvibes

Scotlass your in my thoughts & prayers~

Just shimmed through.....so I'm thinking of all.

For example, Caili wants to own a farm (animals only...no vegetables), live in my house, and convert Liam's room into a bunny room when he moves out. She is also NEVER getting married.

I thought Liam said that he was never moving out either? Or was it that he was going to buy his own house and you were going to live in the basement? :rotfl:

She also kept asking which careers earned a lot of money. She said she had to make a lot of money because she wants a house with stairs! I wonder if she thinks we are poor because we have a one story house?

:rotfl: Kids crack me up.

What is it with these kids wanting rooms just for the animals?! :rotfl:

No YOUR child is always going to be perfect! ;) I know this for a fact, because for me it's always other people's children who are perfect!

QUESTION: I let my hair grow to be able to pull it back when I had the baby but now it seems to be getting in the way. Should I chop it off?

Will it bother you for him to have something to grab onto? If it's short, you won't have an option to pull it back much out of his reach.

I'm a big fan of short hair, I look more together and polished with it, and it's easier for me to fix but I know some people love their hair long. I cut 6 inches off mine about 2 weeks ago and it was so freeing!

Well, I guess it's time for me to ask for some prayers as well. I just got an email from my mom saying that her sister has been having some issues. She's been in a lot of pain and has lost 20lbs.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words and prayers for my family. I really appreciate all of them and all of you for being so supportive. He has at least two more tests, but what we do know now is that the tumor is inoperable due to the location and the involvement of several major blood vessels and that it is approx. 9 cm. However, none of us are giving up hope. My Dad hasn't had an easy life since his own father died when Daddy was just 11 and he has been a fighter ever since. He has always been my hero and I have always thought of him as Superman. If anyone can fight this thing back it is him.

I would be in a fog, too. I'm sorry

I am STILL sick. It's just a bad cold, but it's driving me crazy.

I'm sorry you're feeling so miserable!

Liam also said he was going to call the police because I was being mean.

I always told my mom I was going to call CPS.

We had a minor scene here yesterday over school too.
Alexis was all stressed out & crying about kindergarten Career Day coming up on Friday. They want them to dress up & talk about what they want to be when they grow up, BUT they want it to be a professional or community helper type job. She was all upset because she doesn't want to do any of those kinds of jobs! She wants to be a Singer/Chef or an artist or a Magician when she grows up! I couldn't even calm her down. When Chris came home, she finally calmed her down & has convinced her to "act" like she wants to be a teacher. She is interested in planets right now, so Chris told her they'd make a poster of the solar system & she could dress like a grown up & wear lipstick. That worked!

Perhaps I am difficult, but I'd be tempted to send the teacher an email just asking why their career choice had to be in a specific area. Maybe there is more to the story...?

Tonight I am actually home :yay: I don't think I've cooked in almost two weeks? :confused3 My plan is to make swedish meatballs and mashed potatos, but only if DH gets home early enough to thaw the meat since I forgot to.

Katie used to scream that I was the meanest mom EVER!
 Glynis, if even you, with all the fun and wonderful things you do, get called the meanest mom ever, I feel a lot better!!

I use the "I know." line when Liam calls me mean.

She also kept asking which careers earned a lot of money. She said she had to make a lot of money because she wants a house with stairs! I wonder if she thinks we are poor because we have a one story house?

That's how I feel about Caili. I know it will come though. The girl is sweet, but she is strong-willed. Right now, that is working to my advantage because she could care less about the Jonas Brothers or trying to kiss the neighborhood boys like some of her friends, but I know one day that strong will and mine are going to bump heads.

I thought Liam said that he was never moving out either?

No, his plan is to live next door so he can still have me cook for him.

I know this for a fact, because for me it's always other people's children who are perfect!

Okay, you are all going to laugh about the full story behind the calling the police. He was simply refusing to work on his essay, and I was trying to prepare dinner, so I finally said that he couldn't come eat dinner until the essay was done. That prompted him to say, "Mom, you are so mean! I'm going to call the police and tell them you are STARVING me!!!"

Even though I was furious, I couldn't help laughing at that one. It did get him to complete the essay, and he was only about 10 minutes late to the table.

I can't decide between pizza or fish and chips for tonight.

Laura your story about Liam and the police reminds me of when Alex was small. My stepmom and I took him out for brunch then we had an earlier supper. When I was putting him to bed he wanted to know just what was I thinking? :confused3 he only had 2 meals he was going to call his dad and have me arrested. I asked if he was hungry, no but that was beside the point.:rotfl2:

Dinner tonight will be quick since it is library night.:rolleyes1

Laura, It's funny you mentioned this today! Alexis came home from school yesterday with Jonas Bros. stickers all over her school folder & a picture of one of them torn out of a Disney magazine! I tried not to blast her on it, but I did let her know that Nana didn't approve. :sad2: It made me mad & sad. :sad1:

:rotfl2:

:rotfl::rotfl2::lmao: You're starving the poor boy, that is priceless. :lmao:

But of course he can''t move to far away because you are going to cook for him for the rest of your life!

I can't figure out what's for dinner either. I want veggies & I know that won't satisfy the hubby. I also have arugula & asparugus that I need to use. Maybe a flatbread pizza with ground lamb or turkey, goat cheese, asparagus & arugula!

:lmao::rotfl2: Here I was thinking Alexis was a drama queen! These two boys take the cake!

Kids are so funny! Jacob wants to buy the house across the street from ours, so he can live there and I can do his laundry for him. yeah, right!

Dinner here tonight will be a quiche. I've got eggs, cheese and frozen veggies, so, that's what we'll do! I have to do something quick, so I can get to book club tonight. We're discussing "All the Pretty Horses." Not my favorite book, but I'm not going to miss the meeting. It gets me away from the house and all the drama my kids spew when it's time to do their after dinner chores.

Glynis, Have fun getting out of the house this evening! :goodvibes

Angelina got word that everything is squared away & her surgery is on for tomorrow. The HR & ins depts fussed with the insurance company & got it all fixed. So her surgery is scheduled for 8:15 tomorrow.

I'll be thinking of her in the morning, please let us know how it goes as soon as you can.

You mentioned doing a flatbread, I've never done one before. I found some called flatout wraps that are supposed to be healthy and I was going to do a version of Glynis' taco pizza tonight but I've got a question...do I bake the flatbread first?:confused3

Prayers for Angelina! I'm so glad that everything is falling into place for this! Any news on the job?

I used the Boboli bread crusts and those are precooked, so I didn't cook them first. I guess with the flatout wraps it might be trial and error. Good luck!

Thanks Glynis, I went to their website and it looks like most of the recipes say to prebake for 6-7 minutes so that's what I'm going to try.

I'll be thinking of Angelina tomorrow. I hope everything goes well.

I decided on dinner. Chive risotto cakes topped with roasted asparagus, a poached egg, and shaved parmesean. I just have to wait for John to get home from work.

Thanks my friends! I'll check in to let everyone know how she is doing tomorrow.

Glynis, She didn't hear anything yet.

Kat, I'm making do with what's in the house too. I'm going to try making pizzas on store bought naan! I'm doing asparagus, proscuitto, goat cheese with arugula pesto. We'll see how it turns out. I was going to make the naan, but decided not to bust my bootie this evening.

 I wonder if she thinks we are poor because we have a one story house?

It'd funny how kids see things. I used to clean houses and the kids would sometimes come with me. One house was in the historic district and the couple was furnishing it with antiques. They waited ten years until they could purchase the dining room chairs, that kind of thing. My Donny wanted to know if they were poor because all they had in the house was "old stuff":lmao::lmao:This was the boy who would have bulldozed an old farmhouse that This Old House was restoring and started over! Now Daniel loved that old house and was fascinated with every detail, he loved the farmhouse!

So are all of you telling me that my sweet little daughter who never does anything wrong, other than hug the dog to tight, is going to start giving me trouble? I have the easiest kid in the world, and I'm in for a real shock the first time she talks back.

:lmao::lmao::lmao: All I am going to say is that she is a girl :rolleyes1 I love my DD, she was never in any trouble but she exhausted me ......totally exhausted me. She still does ;)

 Glynis, if even you, with all the fun and wonderful things you do, get called the meanest mom ever, I feel a lot better!!

I agree with you, if Glynis is mean then there is hope for the rest of us.

Liam cracks me up! Good thing he wants to move next door, it sounds like Caili has his room already rented to the bunnies :rotfl:
