The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

I think I am making Japanese tofu stew tonight...unless John's not in the mood.

If anyone's interested, here are some photos from my trip. These are the public shots on flickr, so there are none of us---just beaches and fish and stuff like that. I'll be uploading the personal photos to facebook soon and you can see them there.

Glynis, I'm interested to see if your kids will eat that meatloaf! I know what would happen if Laura tried to give it to Liam and Caili. ;) Your kids must be more adventurous with their food! If it is good, please post the recipe. I'd convert it to turkey meatloaf, but I love blue cheese and cherries.

Aimee, sorry to read about your troubles at work again. It's ongoing for you there, isn't it?

I'm interested to see if they'll eat it, too. I used gorgonzola again, instead of the stronger blue cheese, and it's a flavor they know and like, so I'm crossing my fingers. I'll let you know one way or the other. I love blue cheese and cherries, so I'm pretty sure that Alan and I will like it.

Hi Guys,

I need some prayers for my brother...I found out today that he is extremely ill with stomach cancer. He can really use some prayers and good thoughts. He is my oldest brother and Godfather, has a young daughter and is truly a very down to earth, nice guy.

I am so upset by this...and trying not to be so my BP does not go up.

Thank you.

Lauren, I can not even begin to imagine how you must feel. Prayers to you both.:grouphug:

Thank you guys.

We decided to go to the diner tonight. I am just not up to cooking even if if was a quick meal. The diner in town has really good salad bar and awesome sugar free cheesecake. Yeah, I am an eater when upset...

It will be good to get out...and out of my pjs...

I'm glad you're going to get out with your guys for a while this evening. That's one thing we don't have down here are good diners. I have to watch Guy Fieri's show to get my diner fix.:goodvibes Prayers for you and your family ongoing.

Lauren  I will put your brother on my prayer list. Have a good meal and quality time with your guys.

Glynis I am glad your kids are adventursome eaters Alex would so not go for the blue cheese cherry combo. He doesn't get the fruit meat thing.:confused3 He will only eat applesauce with pork chops or roast.

When you come to visit we'll hit up some diners (there was one on his show that I would love to go to...the one with all the specialty cocktails). Some are just greasy spoons but the one here is pretty good...diners are classic with the young crowd after a night of drinking...nothing like going to a diner at 2 or 3 in the morning and having breakfast. Ah, those were the days.

This is the one in town:

Lauren That menu looks soo good. It doesn't look like they have my all time favorite late night after drinking too much breakfast. An omelete with gyro meat feta and the sauce lots of it. :rolleyes1 Yes I am dieting and I'm starving

Lauren, My prayers are with you & your brother! What is his first name? (it will help me pray for him, even though I know God knows already.)

I'm glad you are going out, hopefully it will get your mind off of it for a little while. Please try not to worry, so your blood pressure doesn't go up. I'm worried about you.

Becky, The pictures are so beautiful! :goodvibes Thanks for sharing them! Alexis said she wants to swim in that pretty water! She loved the turtle & dolphin pics too.

Glynis, I'm anxious to hear how that meatloaf comes out! It really sounds yummy.

Ann, I saw shortribs at the grocery & bought them! So I'll be waiting to hear how that turns out too.

I'm fixing chicken in a Thai red curry sauce & coconut rice.

Janice, That sounds like some omlette! My go to for a night of drinking is corned beef hash, fried eggs and rye toast.

Sheryl, My brother's name is Charles.

Thank you all again...I am so very sad and worried. I hope that they can do something. He has so much discomfort, loosing alot of weight and cannot sleep.

Lauren Try the omelette one time after bean of course. It will cure what ails yah :thumbsup2 Ok I need to stop talking about it. It is hard not to just jump in my car now to go eat one.

Take care of yourself. I know saying try not to worry is not likely here, but try not too worry. God will help your brother.

That diner looks awesome!

Ann, Lauren, anyone who does short ribs....aren't they very fatty? I haven't made them in decades. The last one I had was at JIKO.......

I very seldom see them in the stores here. Sheryl, where do you buy them?

Sauce turned out really good, but I thought the ribs could have gotten a little more tender?!?!?! This was my first time cooking shortribs, tips anyone?

I winged it, no really recipe. I browned the meat in my LeCeuset after dredging it with flour salt and pepper. I took out the meat and sauteed some onion, garlic and mushrooms. I added a 1/3 cup red wine and a jar of tomato sauce. Placed shortribs back in and simmered a couple of hours.
We had it over gemelli pasta, and bread for dunking into the sauce!!!

My boneless ones were not that fatty, more marblized.

Lauren -- I am so sorry to hear about your brother. He's in my thoughts and prayers, and of course, you are too.

Sheryl -- Your dinner sounds fantastic to me right now. I could really eat something like that tonight.

I know Becky makes shortribs for her DH, and he claims they are delicious. I am sure she would post the recipe for you.

Glynis -- Liam and Caili definitely wouldn't eat the variety of foods you get your kids to try. Liam is a little more open to trying new things these days (mostly because he is constantly hungry and food is food) but Caili is pretty picky.

We did go to my neighbor's house, and the kids both enjoyed Wall-E. My neighbor had all kinds of snacks for us, so I am not terribly hungry. I think I will just put together something small for myself once I get the kids to bed...which is going to be soon. ;)

Oh no, I am so sorry. I'm sending positive thoughts his way.

The meatloaf smells heavenly! I've got potatoes in the oven and broccoli ready to steam. Should be a good meal! I can't wait to dig in! The kids all commented on how good it smells, so that's a good sign!

Don't be too impressed. I never tell them about the "secret ingredient" until after they've tried it and liked it. They know they have to eat as many bites as they are old, so they usually just grin and bear it. After their bites, the can make themselves a PBJ if they are still hungry.
